Exploring the genetic diversity and the association of drug resistance and biofilm production in Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from burn wound infections.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acinetobacter baumannii is considered a troublesome cause of infection in burn units, where its capability to form biofilm and resist antibiotics significantly hampers therapeutic success. This study explored the correlations between antimicrobial resistance profiles, biofilm-producing capacity, and genetic diversity of A. baumannii strains from patients with burn wound infection in Isfahan, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six isolates were analyzed for antibiotic resistance using the disk diffusion technique and for biofilm formation through the microtiter dish

Role of the revised Baux score in predicting mortality among burn patients in an African low-income country: a multicentre prospective cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Burn injury is a major cause of mortality. Majority of the burns occur in low and middle-income countries like Uganda. Uganda has a limited number of burn centres and medical resources, making a predictor of mortality necessary in allocation of the limited resources. Although the revised Baux (r-Baux) score has been validated and used in many high income countries, no study has assessed its role in an African low-income country; the reason this study was done. METHODS: This was a prospective multicentre cohort that enroled 101 burn patients with moderate and severe burns admitte

Survey about target temperature and thermal management in intensive care for severe thermal trauma in burn centres of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Burn trauma induces hypermetabolism and alters thermoregulation resulting in elevated body temperature. Because patients with burns are prone to heat loss and hypothermia, maintaining physiologic body temperature is important. However, optimal target temperature is widely unknown because thermoregulation of burn trauma has mainly been studied in the previous century, when treatment concepts differed from current era. The aim of this study was to investigate current thermal management of burn treatment and to investigate the discrepancies between classical concepts of thermoregulation in burn t

Randomized, controlled, within-patient, single-blinded pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of 12-weeks of endermotherapy with adult burn survivors.

BACKGROUND: Vacuum massage, or endermotherapy, is applied to scar tissue with the primary therapeutic goal of promoting structural or physiological changes. These changes are intended to enhance pliability, enabling the skin to possess the strength and elasticity required for normal mobility. The advantage of vacuum massage compared to therapist-generated manual massage is that it provides a standardized dosage using rollers and suction valves to mobilize the tissue. However, research documenting and supporting its impact on post-burn hypertrophic scar is lacking. Thus, this study was designed

A Case Report of the First CEA Transplant in an HIV-Positive Burn Patient in South Africa Using a Novel Composite Culture Technique.

Resource-limited burn centers are usually devoid of cultured epithelial autografts (CEA) owing largely to prohibitive costs. A modified CEA technique at our burn center incorporated cost-effective, routinely-used dressings with favorable outcomes. One unknown concern was the immunosuppressive effect that extensive burns and potentially human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may have on graft take. This case study reports on the graft take outcomes of the first CEA transplanted in an HIV-positive patient with extensive burns in South Africa, using this technique. Graft take was determined

Tailoring polyethylene oxide-modified cross-linked chitosan/PVA nanofibrous membranes: Burn dressing scaffold developed for mupirocin release.

In emergency treatment research, the focus on chitosan-based products for wound healing has been consistent. This study specifically explores a dressing made by mixing chitosan (CS) and poly (vinyl alcohol) PVA. Using electrospinning technology, nanofiber membranes of CS and PVA are created with the assistance of non-toxic and hydrophilic polyethylene oxide (PEO). The outcome is a new nanofibrous membrane loaded with mupirocin, designed for healing burn wounds. The study delves into the influence of PVA, CS, and PEO concentrations on the structural and chemical characteristics of the mats. Thi

Widespread of the Vienna/Hungarian/Brazilian CC8-ST239-SCCmec III MRSA clone in patients hospitalized in the Tunisian Burn and Traumatology Center.

The emergence and spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospitals is a major global public health concern. The current study sought to characterize 25 MRSA clinical isolates collected in a Tunisian hospital from December 2015 to September 2016, with the genetic lineages, virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms determined for these isolates. Three spa-types were detected: t037 (23 isolates), t932, and t2235 (one isolate each). Isolates were ascribed to agr I (n = 20), agr II (n = 1), with four nontypeable isolates. Depending on sequence type (ST), the 2

White and Gray Matter Abnormality in Burning Mouth Syndrome Evaluated with Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging.

PURPOSE: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is defined by a burning sensation or pain in the tongue or other oral sites despite the presence of normal mucosa on inspection. Both psychiatric and neuroimaging investigations have examined BMS; however, there have been no analyses using the neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) model, which provides detailed information of intra- and extracellular microstructures. Therefore, we performed voxel-wise analyses using both NODDI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) models and compared the results to better comprehend the pathology of BMS.

Flesh Fly Maggot-Infected Abscess in a Burn Victim Patient in the United States Without a History of International Travel: A Case Report.

This case report describes an uncommon occurrence of myiasis, specifically a maggot-infected abscess, in a patient with reduced skin sensitivity resulting from severe burns. Myiasis is the infestation of live animal tissue by fly larvae, and while it is primarily associated with tropical and subtropical regions, cases acquired within the United States are rare. The presented case involves a 70-year-old male who arrived at the emergency department with an intensely painful, non-healing wound in the left elbow. Upon examination, the wound was found to be infested with numerous live maggots, and
