PURPOSE: Neuropathies of the long thoracic nerve (LTN) are rare pathologies whose etiology is still subject to discussion. Anatomical study of the nerve from its origin to its distal innervation could provide information about this condition.
METHODS: We dissected 12 nerves from their origin in the brachial plexus to their terminal innervation branches. We identified all potential compression sites along the nerve pathway. Each nerve has been classified anatomically into its supraclavicular and infraclavicular parts. We have collected various biometric data.
RESULTS: We identified three pote

This study aimed to present a new method to predict an area with no Radial Nerve (RN) distribution (safe zone of the RN) in the middle and lower of the upper limb. The RN(60 in total) were dissected from 30 adult cadavers (20 males and 10 females). Acromial Angle, Olecranon, and Lateral Epicondyle of Humerus were selected as reference points. The linear projection of the RN on Acromial Angle-Olecranon and Acromial Angle-Lateral Epicondyle of Humerus were marked as 'Intersection Point A' and 'Intersection Point B'. The lengths of Acromial Angle-Lateral Epicondyle of Humerus, Acromial Angle-Olec

The deep transverse perineal muscle was considered a striated muscle within the deep perineal space; however, recent studies suggest that it consists of smooth muscle. We investigated the histological composition and spatial distribution of the deep perineal space and its anatomical relationships with surrounding structures to understand its role in the perineum. Perineal muscle shape and location from nine cadavers (five males; average age, 79 years) were macroscopically examined. Serial sections were histologically analyzed using Masson's trichrome, Elastica Masson, and immunostaining of smo

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound is a primary imaging modality for diagnosing and managing nerve-related injuries, particularly for identifying peripheral nerve locations. However, its accuracy and reliability in surgical applications remain insufficiently explored, potentially limiting its utility in nerve surgery.
PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the precision of ultrasound in identifying upper limb peripheral nerves by comparing ultrasonographic findings with direct human cadaveric dissection.
METHOD: Fourteen fresh-frozen upper limb specimens were examined in February 2023. Ultrasound assessme

Wrist arthroscopy is an established procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of wrist pathologies. It is routinely performed in the operating room under wrist distraction. An arthroscope with the smallest possible diameter could enable diagnostic "in-office" arthroscopy in outpatient clinics without a need for distraction on a horizontally positioned hand. Our goal was to develop such an arthroscope in collaboration with Polydiagnost GmbH (P) and to test and compare it with existing arthroscopy systems from Karl Storz SE & Co. KG (KS) and Arthrex GmbH (A).The prototype of a newly developed mi

This study is a biomechanical cadaveric investigation to assess bone healing by measuring frequency changes using a new plate design called bone union detection with wire’s natural frequency (BUDWF). Based on natural frequency and strain theory, in bone fracture conditions, the plate experiences higher strain under axial load and generates higher frequency, compared to the bone union condition where strain is lower and frequency is lower. If frequency changes can be detected, they can be used to determine the bone healing status. Eight human cadaveric tibia bones were used in the experiment. B

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cases of bone nonunion are rare and often a result of complex local vascular limitations. The periosteum plays a key role in bone healing through its regenerative properties. Vascularized periosteal grafts have previously been effective in treating complex cases. This study explores the vascular anatomy of the radial periosteum supplied by the anterior interosseous vessels and introduces the vascularized radial periosteal graft (VRPG), successfully implemented in a case of ulnar nonunion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cadaveric studies of ten upper limbs were conducted under ×2.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive keyhole approaches to the anterior skull base and circle of Willis require small incisions near distal branches of the temporal division (TD) of the facial nerve. Few studies have focused on planning the incision to avoid the TD branches and maximize exposure in these approaches. This study aimed to define a safe zone away from the TD branches for skin incision during minimally invasive keyhole approaches using reliable and practical skin landmarks.
METHODS: In 5 cadaveric heads (10 sides), a Cartesian system was established with the orbitomeatal line connecting

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) serves as the primary minimally invasive route to the ventral craniovertebral junction (CVJ). However, anatomic constraints limit its caudal reach. Multiport endoscopic approaches may complement a standard EEA providing additional reach. This anatomic study evaluates the EEA's anatomic limitations in accessing the CVJ and examines how contralateral nasofrontal trephination (CNT) port may overcome these constraints.
METHODS: Thirty-two cadaveric specimens underwent EEA and CNT dissections. Key measurements included the nasoaxia

The goal of this experimental study was to quantify the influence of helical pitch and gantry rotation time on image quality and file size in ultrahigh-resolution photon-counting CT (UHR-PCCT). Cervical and lumbar spine, pelvis, and upper legs of two fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were subjected to nine dose-matched UHR-PCCT scan protocols employing a collimation of 120 × 0.2 mm with varying pitch (0.3/1.0/1.2) and rotation time (0.25/0.5/1.0 s). Image quality was analyzed independently by five radiologists and further substantiated by placing normed regions of interest to record mean signal

BACKGROUND: The rhomboid fossa (RF) is a crucial anatomical region in brainstem surgery as it contains essential structures such as the reticular formation and cranial nerve nuclei. This study aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the complex microsurgical anatomy of the RF, which is vital for the safe execution of neurosurgical procedures.
METHODS: Morphometric analysis was conducted on 45 adult human brainstems preserved in 10% formalin. Under 20× magnification, 13 linear measurements were performed using a millimeter graph to identify key anatomical landmarks.
RESULTS: The RF measu

The number of patients waiting for kidney transplants from deceased organ donors continues to increase. In this context, non-transplantation of acceptable kidneys is especially regrettable. Here, we review successful transplantation of deceased donor kidneys with anatomic abnormalities, intrinsic kidney diseases, and other ostensibly problematic conditions. These scenarios will be encountered infrequently and, with limited time to decide, uncertainty often results in organ refusal. In general, anatomic abnormalities can be overcome, kidney diseases remit in recipients, and systemic donor condi

We implemented flipped learning for a gross anatomy dissection course and compared its effects on students' motivation and academic achievement with those of traditional dissection methods. We invited 142 first-year medical students at Chonnam National University Medical School to participate in this study. All participants engaged in traditional dissection methods in the first part of the study and flipped learning in the latter part. Medical students' motivation to learn anatomy by cadaveric dissection was measured using the ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) model. Th

Mold growth on body donations remains an underreported yet serious issue in anatomical teaching. Bacterial and fungal growth pose health risks to lecturers and students, alongside with ethical and aesthetic concerns. However, limited information exists on the presence of bacteria and fungi on body donations and their underlying causes. To investigate the potential impact of airborne germs on body donation contamination, we conducted indoor air measurements before, during, and after our anatomical dissection course, with outdoor measurements serving as a control. Tissue samples from the dissect
