Renal cell carcinoma metastases to the maxillary sinus.

Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the head and neck region is rare. We report the case of a 65-year-old man with history of RCC, presented 7 years after nephrectomy, adrenalectomy and lung metastasectomy for his primary tumour, with symptoms of nasal obstruction, postnasal drip, productive cough and pressure sensation in the left maxillary sinus. CT revealed a unilateral, irregular opacification in the left maxillary sinus with bony erosion of the infraorbital canal wall. A yellow cystic lesion was completely removed from the maxillary sinus during functional endoscopic sinus surgery

Uterine angioleiomyoma in an African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus).

BACKGROUND: A uterine neoplasm was observed, as an incidental finding, during post-mortem examination of a 26-year-old female multiparous African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus). The intramural, expansile, 2 to 3 cm well-demarcated, dark-red, nodular neoplasm was located on the anterior uterine body (corpus) wall. METHODS: The mass was examined by light microscopy and by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The mass was confirmed as a cavernous uterine angioleiomyoma (syn. vascular leiomyoma) characterized by abundant intratumoural vasculature lined by Factor VIII-positive endothelial

Could 3D bioprinted tissues offer future hope for microtia treatment?

Microtia is a congenital deformity where the pinna is underdeveloped. Contraindications to rib surgery for microtia reconstruction include high-risk surgical status and chest-wall deformities [1-2]. However does stem-cell-based 3D Bioprinting offer revolutionary therapeutic options for patients with such tissue abnormalities. As a technology, 3D-bioprinting is being developed to generate homogeneous tissues by depositing a low viscosity printable cellular-active gel which matures into a tissue [3]. Currently on-going research is developing the process towards producing cartilage tissues for us

[Polymyalgia rheumatica and aortic involvement].

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder that affects people over 50 years of age, characterized by pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulder and pelvic girdles. PMR may occur as an isolated condition or concomitantly with giant cell arteritis. Similar to other inflammatory rheumatic disorders, PMR is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk due to inflammatory changes in large arterial vessels, which result in an increased chance of developing aneurysms and dissections. International guidelines do not provide specific indications about the management of PMR patients

[Lipopolysaccharide affects male reproductive function through Toll-like receptors].

Reproductive tract infection is one of the factors of male infertility, but the mechanisms responsible are hitherto poorly defined. Recent studies show that one of the microbial pattern-recognition receptors, Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway, plays a critical role in inflammation-induced male infertility. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a major component in the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria, could induce inflammatory response through TLRs. A large number of researches suggest that TLRs express widely in the male reproductive tract and LPS-induced inflammatory reaction through TLRs ma

Genetic dissection of ventral folding morphogenesis in mouse: embryonic visceral endoderm-supplied BMP2 positions head and heart.

Ventral folding morphogenesis (VFM), a vital morphogenetic process in amniotes, mediates gut endoderm internalization, linear heart tube formation, ventral body wall closure and encasement of the fetus in extraembryonic membranes. Aberrant VFM underlies a number of birth defects such as gastroschisis and ectopia cordis in human and misplacement of head and heart in mouse. Recent cell lineage-specific mouse mutant analyses identified the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) pathway and Anterior Visceral Endoderm (AVE) as key regulators of anterior VFM. Loss of BMP2 expression solely from embryonic

Toll-like receptors, their ligands, and atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a disease characterized by inflammation in the arterial wall. Atherogenesis is dependent on the innate immune response involving activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and the expression of inflammatory proteins. TLRs, which recognize various pathogen-associated molecular patterns, are expressed in various cell types within the atherosclerotic plaque. Microbial agents are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and this is, in part, due to activation of TLRs. Recently considerable evidence has been provided suggesting that endogenous proteins promote atheroscl

Colovesical fistula in a patient with recurrent cervical cancer detected by FDG PET/CT.

We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with the history of stage IB cervical cancer. She was found to have a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in sigmoid colon. FDG PET/CT was then performed for whole-body cancer work-up. Intense FDG activity accumulated in the sigmoid tumor, with an unusually high SUVmax of 72.42, and was seen downwardly connected with the activity of urinary bladder on PET images. On the coregistered CT images, irregular wall thickening was noted for both sigmoid colon and urinary bladder with a hypodensity tract communicating with each other. It was concluded that recur

[Aquaporins--a new element in the regulation of body water homeostasis].

Aquaporins represent an ubiquitous class of integral membrane proteins that are serving in the passage of water across cell membrane. A subset of aquaporins may additionally facilitate transmembrane permeation of small neutral solutes such as glicerol (aquaglyceroporins). The widespread occurrence and an unique function of aquaporins give rise to the high degree of their intra- and interspecies homology, especially in their regions forming the internal wall of channel. The review presents current knowledge about the role of water channels in regulation of body homeostasis basing on results of

Immunization protocols for use in animal models of candidiasis.

Immunoprotection during most forms of candidiasis (oropharyngeal, invasive) is lacking since most candidiasis patients are immunosuppressed either as a result of their allogeneic transplant, cancer chemotherapy, or HIV infection. Consequently, immunization might be considered as an unlikely way to protect patients from such infection. Nonetheless, there are a number of investigations that indicate active immunization or the passive treatment with hyperimmune, specific antibodies can result in protection in models of experimental candidiasis. The former subject, active immunization, is the subj

Bacillus anthracis secretes proteins that mediate heme acquisition from hemoglobin.

Acquisition of iron is necessary for the replication of nearly all bacterial pathogens; however, iron of vertebrate hosts is mostly sequestered by heme and bound to hemoglobin within red blood cells. In Bacillus anthracis, the spore-forming agent of anthrax, the mechanisms of iron scavenging from hemoglobin are unknown. We report here that B. anthracis secretes IsdX1 and IsdX2, two NEAT domain proteins, to remove heme from hemoglobin, thereby retrieving iron for bacterial growth. Unlike other Gram-positive bacteria, which rely on cell wall anchored Isd proteins for heme scavenging, B. anthraci

Aspiration cytology of extramammary tumours metastatic to the breast.

This study was undertaken to highlight the use of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to distinguish tumours metastatic to the breast from primary breast malignancies. A total of 1866 fine needle aspirates of the breast were performed during a period of 7 years. Three hundred and fourteen cases of breast malignancies were diagnosed and 5 (1.5%) out of these cases were metastatic in origin. The metastatic tumors included, 2 cases of malignant melanoma (chest wall and left arm), 1 case each of haematolymphoid malignancy, adenocarcinoma of the ovary, and squamous cell carcinoma (left leg). Trehalose-6-phosphate Phosphatase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis induces humoral and cellular immune responses.

Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase is an enzyme strictly essential for the growth of mycobacteria. Subcellular fractionation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) located the trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase in the cell wall and membrane fractions. Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase induced an increased Th1-type immune response in mice, characterized by an elevated level of interferon-gamma in antigen-stimulated splenocyte culture and a strong IgG2a antibody response. The trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase was recognized by the sera of tuberculosis patients an

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma: US and CT findings in three patients.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare disorder. We examined two females and one male with multiple soft-tissue masses in the abdominal wall. One of these three patients also had soft-tissue masses in the right thigh and right buttock. The histologic diagnosis was revealed as SPTCL in all three cases. The ultrasound (US) findings in two of these cases were diffuse, ill-defined hyperechoic areas with a linear vascular signal. The findings of the abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scanning with contrast enhancement were multiple enhancing nodules with an infi

Enzymes acting on peptides containing D-amino acid.

Mainly microorganisms but only a few higher organisms are presently known to express enzymes that hydrolyze peptides containing D-amino acids. These enzymes can be involved in proceedings at the bacterial cell wall, in either assembly or modification, and thus cause resistance to glycopeptide antibiotics, or mediate resistance against beta-lactam antibiotics. In other cases the in vivo function is still unknown. New enzymes screened from nature, such as D-aminopeptidase, D-amino acid amidase, alkaline D-peptidase or D-aminoacylase, offer potential application in the production of D-amino acids

Location of repeat elements in glucansucrases of Leuconostoc and Streptococcus species.

Glucosyltransferases of oral streptococci, dextransucrases and alternansucrase of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, collectively referred to as glucansucrases, are large extracellular enzymes that synthesise glucans with a variety of structures and properties. A characteristic of all these glucansucrases is the possession of a C-terminal domain consisting of a series of tandem amino acid repeats. These repeat units are thought to interact with glucan but closely resemble the cell wall binding domain motif found in choline binding proteins in Streptococcus pneumoniae and surface-located proteins in a

Scrotal lymphangioma in children.

The intrascrotal localization of lymphangioma in children is uncommon, especially when the lymphangioma does not depend on testicular structures. We present the case of a 13-year-old male who started with a right intrascrotal mass unconnected with the testicle, clinically and ultrasonically compatible with cystic lymphangioma. The mass was excised because of progressive growth over the previous 5 months, and at surgery a scrotal lymphangioma was disclosed projecting towards the umbilical area through the subcutaneous cell tissue of the anterior abdominal wall. There have been no complications

Development of novel vaccines against anthrax in man.

It has been shown that antianthrax immunity induced by the novel vaccine proposed has not only antitoxic, but also antispore character. The whole complex of antigens, namely surface spore antigens, surface antigens of cell wall and toxin components is required for the induction of strong and stable immunity against anthrax. The STI-1 vaccine strain with introduced resistance to several antibiotics seems to be promising for prophylaxis and treatment of anthrax in case of emergency, especially if antibiotic pretreatment could be expected. The role of vascular steroid receptors in the control of vascular contractility and peripheral vascular resistance.

Evidence is presented that glucocorticoids (GC) and mineralocorticoids (MC) control contractility of vascular smooth muscle (VSM). This control is effected through the in situ mechanism for the action of these steroids in the arterial and arteriolar wall. This action is mediated through GC and MC receptors in the VSM cell. Acting through these receptors, MC and GC increase transport capacities of different transmembrane transport systems for Na+ and/or Ca2+ through induction of synthesis of proteins constituting the transport systems. Colocalization of enzymes deactivating cortisol in VSM, wit
