Immediate neural effects of acupuncture manipulation time for stroke with motor dysfunction: a fMRI pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture is widely utilized as a beneficial intervention for the treatment of motor dysfunction after stroke, and its effectiveness depends on the stimulation dose. Manipulation time is an important factor affecting the dose. This trial aimed use fMRI to explore the immediate neural effects in stroke patients with motor dysfunction by different acupuncture manipulation times, to reveal the neural mechanism of acupuncture manipulation. METHODS: Thirty participants were divided into three groups according to different acupuncture times. Each group received the same acupoint pre

An autopsy case of MV 2K + C subtype of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Methionine/valine (MV) 2 type of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob (sCJD) is divided into three subtypes based on neuropathological criteria: MV2-kuru (MV2K), MV2-cortical (MV2C), and MV2K + C, exhibiting the co-occurrence of these two pathological features. We report an autopsy case of MV2K + C subtype of sCJD. A 46-year-old Japanese man began to make mistakes at work. Two months later, he gradually developed gait instability. The initial neurological examination revealed limb ataxia and myoclonus. Diffusion-weighted images (DWI) showed a hyperintensity in the right frontal cortex, basal ganglia, an

Evaluating the role of anxiety on the association between irritable bowel syndrome and brain volumes: a mediation analysis in the UK Biobank cohort.

There is a strong link between irritable bowel syndrome and brain volumes, yet, to date, research examining the mediators of this association has been little. Based on the phenotypic data of 15 248 participants from the UK Biobank, a two-stage mediation analysis was performed to assess the association among brain volumes, anxiety, and irritable bowel syndrome. In the first stage, we identified the candidate mediating role of anxiety for irritable bowel syndrome associated with brain volumes using regression models. Then, we quantified the magnitude of the mediation effects by evaluating the av

The impact of HCN4 channels on CNS brain networks as a new target in pain development.

While it is well established that the isoform 2 of the hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channel (HCN2) plays an important role in the development and maintenance of pain, the role of the closely related HCN4 isoform in the processing of nociceptive signals is not known. HCN4 channels are highly expressed in the thalamus, a region important for stimulus transmission and information processing. We used a brain-specific HCN4-knockout mouse line (HCN4-KO) to explore the role of HCN4 channels in acute nociceptive processing using several behavioral tests as well as a multi

Ni and Al mixture amplifies cerebellar oxido-inflammatory responses, down regulates AChE and BDNF/NGF levels in motor impairment in male albino rats.

BACKGROUND: Aluminum and nickel are potent neurotoxicants to which humans are constantly exposed. Previous studies have demonstrated that these two metals can affect the motor system, but their effects on the cerebellum, a central nervous system region with the highest number of neurons, have remained largely unexplored. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the adverse effects of Al, Ni, and Al+Ni in vivo. METHODS: In our study, seven male Sprague Dawley rats per group were orally exposed to deionized water, 0.2 mg/kg of Ni, 1 mg/kg of Al, and 0.2 mg/kg of Ni + 1 mg/kg of Al (as a b

Clinical efficacy of the mulligan maneuver for cervicogenic headache: a randomized controlled trial.

Cervicogenic headache is an often observed secondary headache in clinical settings, with patients who endure prolonged and persistent pain being particularly susceptible to mood changes. Currently, the Mulligan is one of the effective methods for CEH. However, there is a lack of evaluation about the strength and frequency of headaches, as well as the assessment of pain-induced emotions, in individuals with CEH using this particular procedure. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mulligan maneuver from a multidimensional perspective of pain intensity and mood. A total of forty

Brain MRI detects early-stage alterations and disease progression in Friedreich ataxia.

Friedreich ataxia is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cerebellar and spinal atrophy. However, studies to elucidate the longitudinal progression of the pathology in the brain are somewhat inconsistent and limited, especially for early-stage Friedreich ataxia. Using a multimodal neuroimaging protocol, combined with advanced analysis methods, we sought to identify macrostructural and microstructural alterations in the brain of patients with early-stage Friedreich ataxia to better understand its distribution patterns and progression. We enrolled 28 patients with Friedreich

TNF-α Regulates the Glucocorticoid Receptor Alpha Expression in Human Nasal Epithelial Cells Via p65-NF-κb and p38-MAPK Signaling Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine (DA) is one of the most important catecholamine neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. The degeneration and deletion of dopaminergic neurons are closely linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) and other psychiatric or neurological diseases. Several studies have been suggesting that intestinal microorganisms are associated with the occurrence of central nervous diseases, including diseases that are closely related to dopaminergic neurons. However, the intestinal microorganism's regulation of dopaminergic neurons in the brain is largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study

Hypothalamic structural integrity and temporal complexity of cortical information processing at rest in migraine without aura patients between attacks.

The hypothalamus has been attributed an important role during the premonitory phase of a migraine attack. Less is known about the role played by the hypothalamus in the interictal period and its relationship with the putative neurocognitive networks previously identified in the pathophysiology of migraine. Our aim was to test whether the hypothalamic microstructure would be altered during the interictal period and whether this co-existed with aberrant connectivity at cortical level. We collected multimodal MRI data from 20 untreated patients with migraine without aura between attacks (MO) and

Cannabis Affects Cerebellar Volume and Sleep Differently in Men and Women.

Background: There are known sex differences in behavioral and clinical outcomes associated with drugs of abuse, including cannabis. However, little is known about how chronic cannabis use and sex interact to affect brain structure, particularly in regions with high cannabinoid receptor expression, such as the cerebellum, amygdala, and hippocampus. Based on behavioral data suggesting that females may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of chronic cannabis use, we hypothesized lower volumes in these regions in female cannabis users. We also hypothesized poorer sleep quality among female ca

Assessing cerebellar-cortical connectivity using concurrent TMS-EEG: a feasibility study.

Combined single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) has been used to probe the features of local networks in the cerebral cortex. Here, we investigated whether we can use this approach to explore long-range connections between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex. Ten healthy adults received single-pulse suprathreshold TMS to the cerebellum and an occipital/parietal control site with double-cone and figure-of-eight coils while cerebral activity was recorded. A multisensory electrical control condition was used to simulate the sensation of the double-con

Botulinum Toxin Modulates Posterior Parietal Cortex Activation in Post-stroke Spasticity of the Upper Limb.

Post-stroke spasticity (PSS) is effectively treated with intramuscular botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), although the clinical improvement is likely mediated by changes at the central nervous system level. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain, this study aims to confirm and locate BoNT-A-related changes during motor imagery with the impaired hand in severe PSS. Temporary alterations in primary and secondary sensorimotor representation of the impaired upper limb were expected. Thirty chronic stroke patients with upper limb PSS undergoing comprehensive treatment includi

Degeneration of the Inferior Cerebellar Peduncle After Middle Cerebral Artery Stroke: Another Perspective on Crossed Cerebellar Diaschisis.

Background and Purpose- Deafferentation of the cortico-ponto-cerebellar pathway has been proposed as a key mechanism of crossed cerebellar diaschisis. Although the cerebellum receives afferent stimuli from both cortico-ponto-cerebellar and spinocerebellar pathways, evidence on whether spinocerebellar deafferentation contributes to a hypofunctional cerebellum is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether changes in the spinocerebellar pathway occur after middle cerebral artery stroke. Methods- Twenty-three patients admitted to our inpatient rehabilitation facility and 23 age-matched heal

Metabolomics of mammalian brain reveals regional differences.

BACKGROUND: The mammalian brain is organized into regions with specific biological functions and properties. These regions have distinct transcriptomes, but little is known whether they may also differ in their metabolome. The metabolome, a collection of small molecules or metabolites, is at the intersection of the genetic background of a given cell or tissue and the environmental influences that affect it. Thus, the metabolome directly reflects information about the physiologic state of a biological system under a particular condition. The objective of this study was to investigate whether va

Intersegmental coordination patterns are differently affected in Parkinson's disease and cerebellar ataxia.

The law of intersegmental coordination (Borghese et al. 1996) may be altered in pathological conditions. Here we investigated the contribution of the basal ganglia (BG) and the cerebellum to lower limb intersegmental coordination by inspecting the plane's orientation and other parameters pertinent to this law in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) or cerebellar ataxia (CA). We also applied a mathematical model that successfully accounts for the intersegmental law of coordination observed in control subjects (Barliya et al. 2009). In the present study, we compared the planarity in
