Childhood maltreatment (CM), defined as caregiver-perpetrated abuse or neglect during childhood or adolescence, is associated with enduring social dysfunction. Adults with a history of CM often maintain greater interpersonal distance from both friends and strangers, regardless of relational closeness. Predictive-processing models suggest that such impairments may stem from the development of overly precise negative beliefs about others, which are resistant to updating, even in the face of contradictory information. The current study investigated whether the ability to form and update social be

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is associated with elevated adult weight. It is unclear whether this association extends to pregnancy, a critical window for the development of obesity.
METHODS: We examined associations of childhood maltreatment histories with prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain among women who had participated for >20 years in a longitudinal cohort. At age 26-35 years, participants reported childhood maltreatment (physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; emotional neglect) and, 5 years later, about prepregnancy weight and gestational weight gain fo

BACKGROUND: Maltreatment by a primary caregiver is an important risk factor for the development of PTSD symptoms. Whereas meta-analyses indicate that parental emotional abuse is one of the most common forms of maltreatment, the impact of emotional abuse on PTSD symptoms and treatment effectiveness is still unclear, especially in children.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the impact of parental emotional abuse on PTSD symptom severity and effectiveness of trauma treatment in children and adolescents.
METHOD: In an outpatient sample (N = 287, mean age = 15.5 years), emotional abuse, index tr

This correlational cross-sectional study was designed to investigate whether the intimate partner violence (IPV) suffered by mothers (physical and psychological maltreatment), child eyewitness of psychological and physical maltreatment suffered by the mother, the neglect suffered by children, and the maltreatment (physical and psychological) directly suffered by children are statistically associated to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms exhibited by the child. In addition, the prevalence of child PTSD was estimated, as well as the concordance between the PTSD symptoms assessed by t

This study first investigated the prevalence of emotional and physical maltreatment by teachers in South Korea and then identified factors that predict student maltreatment by teachers. Specific areas of interest were the associations between student demographic characteristics (gender and grade level), family (economic status), and school experience (academic performance and student-teacher relationships) and how these characteristics were related to student maltreatment. Data were obtained by questionnaire from a random sample of 1,777 students in middle schools in Seoul, the largest metropo

AIM: To explore whether children (age 10, 12 and 15 years) with self-reported chronic conditions are at higher risk of physical abuse and/or exposure to intimate-partner violence than other children, while considering the importance of demographic factors.
METHODS: A national cross-sectional study of 2771 pupils in grades 4, 6 and 9 from 44 schools in Sweden (91% response rate). Conflict Tactic Scales were used to measure physical abuse and separate questions measured exposure to intimate-partner violence. A list of 13 diagnoses was used to estimate chronic conditions.
RESULTS: Children with

In order to better define risk factors for perinatal substance abuse, data from 352 pregnant teenagers enrolled in a comprehensive prenatal clinic were analyzed. Fifteen years was the average age, 82% were of minority descent, and all were receiving public assistance. At their first visit, a social worker obtained information on their home environment, family history, education, peer relationships, physical and mental health, and history of substance use. Following the interview, all teens were given a complete prenatal examination, including drug toxicology screening. The results indicate rel

BACKGROUND: This study determined whether women in a primary care practice who described one or both of their parents as alcohol dependent (group A) or harsh, rigid, or difficult (group B) were more likely to have chronic illness than women who denied having parents with these characteristics (group C).
METHODS: A consecutive sample of 120 women scheduled for comprehensive physical examinations were interviewed to determine parental characteristics, demographic data (age, education, employment, and marital status), and clinical information (chronic illness and lifetime surgeries). In addition

Domestic and intimate partner violence (IPV) in Canada is a complex public health and social issue affecting individuals of all genders, yet male victims remain significantly under-recognized. Although women experience the highest rates and most severe outcomes, growing evidence shows that men also face substantial physical, psychological, emotional, financial, and coercive abuse. Police-reported data from 2022 indicate that one in five IPV victims are male, with a 21% increase in IPV against men and boys since 2014. Social stigma, gender norms, and limited male-focused services contribute to

Potential associations between adverse childhood events and disordered eating have been a topic of research interest for decades, often focused on specific types of child abuse.1 More recent research has included a wider variety of adverse childhood events, including parental illness or absence.2 , 3 The idea that such adversity triggers disordered eating has caught the eye of media and has become socially accepted, with films such as To the Bone focusing on a character's struggle with an eating disorder in the wake of her parents' divorce and emotional absenteeism.4 Portrayals like this risk

Research has previously suggested an association between childhood maltreatment and narcissism. However, this research has primarily focused on the grandiose dimension of narcissism. This contrasts with a multi-dimensional approach to understanding narcissistic pathology, which emphasizes both grandiosity and vulnerability. Research suggests that one factor associated with narcissistic grandiosity is childhood maltreatment, although the association between child maltreatment and narcissistic vulnerability is unclear. In this study, we examine the association between different forms of childhoo

Children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face a high risk of victimization (including child abuse, neglect, bullying), yet prevention strategies for this population remain underrepresented and under-evaluated. This scoping review analyzes ten community-based victimization prevention programs for youth with IDD (ages 10-25) across North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia. Programs varied in structure, content, and teaching strategies, with all delivered over multiple sessions and most including evaluations of learning outcomes or implementation qual

This scoping review critically assessed evidence regarding mental disorders among mothers involved with the criminal justice system (CJS) and provided pooled prevalence rates of mental disorders. In total, 27 studies were included in the review, with 23 studies from the United States of America and 26 focused on incarcerated mothers. The findings supported the evidence on substantial burden of mental disorders, among CJS-involved mothers. Several factors contributing to mental disorders were identified, including history of abuse/incarceration/mental illness, a greater number of pregnancies, c

Schools in the United States increasingly incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) as a part of comprehensive youth suicide prevention programs in schools. We reviewed the literature to investigate the inclusion of SEL in youth suicide prevention efforts. We identified several known risk factors to youth suicide, namely, hopelessness, anxiety, substance use, and child sexual abuse, then cross-walked that review to SEL competencies shown to mitigate each of those known risk factors. We found all SEL competencies, to some extent, across all the evidence-based, school-based youth suicide preve

Recent research suggests that transgender and/or gender nonconforming (TGNC) youth present with heightened levels of mental health problems compared to peers. This study seeks to examine the mental health needs of a large sample of treatment-seeking TGNC youth by comparing them to cisgender males and females. Participants were 94,804 children and youth ages 4-18 years (M = 12.1, SD = 3.72) who completed the interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health Instrument (ChYMH) or Screener (ChYMH-S) at participating mental health agencies in the Ontario, Canada. Overall, the mental health presentations of T

AIMS: This study examines whether the relational proximity to the victim or perpetrator of witnessed community violence is associated with youth symptoms.
METHODS: Data come from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect, a national high-risk sample. The sample included 12-year-old youth (N = 720) who had witnessed violence in their lifetimes. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions tested whether relationship proximity differentiated youth functioning (social competency, withdrawal, anxiety/depression, delinquency, and aggression), and whether gender moderated these effects.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant yet preventable public health problem affecting 1 in 15 children annually. Children exposed to IPV exhibit lifelong consequences including increased risks of social, emotional, psychological and behavioral problems (mood and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, substance abuse, and school-related problems). Limited research exists in identifying and assessing gaps in IPV screening and surveillance techniques for vulnerable populations such as immigrants, refugees, or in families where English is not spoken in the home.
