Pain, eating behavior, and weight outcomes in adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: In adults, pain is prospectively associated with overweight/obesity and concurrently associated with dysregulated eating, with evidence for stronger associations in women than men. This study aimed to evaluate whether similar associations among pain response, BMI, and loss of control (LOC) eating are also evident in adolescent girls. METHOD: Girls (n = 202) completed the cold pressor test (CPT) at age 10, and BMI and LOC eating were assessed annually from ages 10-16 years. Generalized linear models were used to test associations between pain tolerance (total immersion time) and thr

Identifying the Inter-Domain Relations Among ODD, CD, and CU Traits in Preschool Children Using Network Analysis.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are two of the most common forms of disruptive behavior disorders during childhood. Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are an important factor in understanding the presentation of these externalizing forms of psychopathology. ODD, CD, and CU traits are highly related constructs, yet little work has examined how these externalizing forms of psychopathology are related at the domain level. The current study utilized network analysis to identify the distinct domains that explain the associations among ODD, CD, and CU traits. In a sample o

Diet Quality and Physical Fighting Among Youth: A Cross-National Study.

The predictors of engaging in physical violence appear to be quite diverse, covering an array of social and psychological risk factors. The present study expands upon this literature by exploring the link between diet quality and physical fighting during early adolescence using cross-national data from the 2005/2006 Health Behaviors of School Children (HBSC) survey. The results reveal that the rate of physical fighting was 40% higher among youths with lower quality diets, whereas the odds of frequent physical fighting were 68% higher, relative to youths with better diets. Ancillary analyses re

Brief exposure to a self-paced computer-based reading programme and how it impacts reading ability and behaviour problems.

Basic literacy skills underlie much future adult functioning, and are targeted in children through a variety of means. Children with reading problems were exposed either to a self-paced computer programme that focused on improving phonetic ability, or underwent a classroom-based reading intervention. Exposure was limited to 3 40-min sessions a week, for six weeks. The children were assessed in terms of their reading, spelling, and mathematics abilities, as well as for their externalising and internalising behaviour problems, before the programme commenced, and immediately after the programme t

Applying social learning theory to childhood and adolescent firesetting: can it lead to serial murder?

Despite the fact that serial murder has existed for centuries, it has been given little academic attention in the social science literature. Existing studies have primarily examined the motivational factors involved in the commission of serial murder. However, research examining the childhood and adolescent backgrounds of serial murderers is scant. Based on three case studies of serial murderers, this study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the possible link between childhood and/or adolescent fire setting and adult serial murder by applying social learning theory.

[Acquired polydipsia in infants].

The authors report a case of acquired polydipsia in an infant. The case was unusual in its presentation, its late onset (without anorexia, nor vomiting), and the normal salt-water balance contrarily to what is observed in water intoxication. The course was favourable after progressive conditioning.

Prevalence and effects of child exposure to domestic violence.

In recent years, researchers have focused attention on children who are exposed to domestic violence. Although presently there are no scientifically credible estimates of the national prevalence of children exposed to domestic violence, existing data suggest that large numbers of American children are affected. This article discusses the limitations of current databases and describes a promising model for the collection of reliable and valid prevalence data, the Spousal Assault Replication Program, which uses data collected through collaboration between police and university researchers. Development of eight pubertal males with 47,xxy karyotype.

The increasing frequency with which the diagnosis of the 47,XXY karyotype is made requires more knowledge of the prognosis of this condition. We present four 47,XXY boys identified at birth and followed since then (Group I), and four 47,XXY boys diagnosed because of physical and/or emotional problems (Group II). Physical, psychological, language, and hormone data are presented. The physical and intellectual profiles for the two groups are similar. This is in contrast to the very poor school and emotional adjustment of the Group II individuals. These boys were definitely more difficult and prob

Joint Developmental Trajectories of Social Assertiveness and Prosociality: A Parallel Process Latent Class Growth Analysis.

Social assertiveness and prosociality are two related but distinct aspects of social competence that are important to youth's social success. They are likely co-occurrence and interact dynamically over time, but their interdependence and interaction have been overlooked in previous research. This study examined the joint developmental trajectories of the two aspects from middle childhood to early adolescence and tested their associations with aggression, shyness, academic performance and depressive symptoms. Participants included a sample of elementary school children in China (initially N = 1

Anti-seizure medication is a minor causative factor in behavioral problems of children with tuberous sclerosis complex.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral problems in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) are considered among the highest disease burden for both patients and caregivers, while the cause is often not clear. The current study aimed to explore the relationship between anti-seizure medication (ASM) and behavioral manifestations in children with TSC and epilepsy. METHODS: 118 children referred to the University Medical Center Utrecht with definite TSC and epilepsy, aged 2-18 years, were included in a retrospective cohort study. Behavioral problems were categorized into: 'any behavioral problem', 'aggressive behavio

Chaos, danger, and maternal parenting in families: Links with adolescent adjustment in low- and middle-income countries.

The current longitudinal study is the first comparative investigation across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to test the hypothesis that harsher and less affectionate maternal parenting (child age 14 years, on average) statistically mediates the prediction from prior household chaos and neighborhood danger (at 13 years) to subsequent adolescent maladjustment (externalizing, internalizing, and school performance problems at 15 years). The sample included 511 urban families in six LMICs: China, Colombia, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, and Thailand. Multigroup structural equation modeli

Pharmacologic Treatment of Severe Irritability and Problem Behaviors in Autism: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized as a public health issue. Irritability and aggression (IA) often negatively affect the lives of people with ASD and their families. Although many medications have been tested for IA in ASDs in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), critical quantitative analyses of these trials are lacking in the literature. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review and quantitatively analyze the efficacy and safety of pharmacologic treatments for IA in youth with ASD. DATA SOURCES: Studies were identified from Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, and revi

Responses to Wh-, Yes/No-, A-not-A, and choice questions in Taiwanese children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.

The present study investigated the hypothesis that children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) have a greater difficulty in responding to Wh- than Yes/No questions across languages. Conversations between Taiwanese children and their mothers were investigated and the children's response adequacy to maternal questions in a semi-structured setting were examined. Twelve Taiwanese children with HFASD, ranging in age from 7.1 to 14.9 years old, were compared with 12 typically developing (TD) children matched on age, sex, IQ and mean length of utterance in syllable (MLUs). The autism diagnostic observation schedule-generic: a standard measure of social and communication deficits associated with the spectrum of autism.

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS-G) is a semistructured, standardized assessment of social interaction, communication, play, and imaginative use of materials for individuals suspected of having autism spectrum disorders. The observational schedule consists of four 30-minute modules, each designed to be administered to different individuals according to their level of expressive language. Psychometric data are presented for 223 children and adults with Autistic Disorder (autism), Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) or nonspectrum diagnoses.

Feeding problems, sleep disturbances, and negative behaviors in a toddler.

Tiffany, a 3-year-old girl, was referred to the developmental and behavioral pediatrics service for evaluation of significant and persistent negative behaviors associated with refusal to eat at meal time and constant snacking during the past 3 months. She lost 2 pounds, but her weight for her height was at the 50th percentile. Her mother indicated that Tiffany had frequent night awakenings (>10) and late sleep onset (between 12:00 and 1:00 a.m.). Her mother described her as being "easily frustrated," getting upset and angry very quickly. Tiffany was identified at an early intervention program
