Diagnostic performance of four SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays in patients with COVID-19 or with bacterial and non-SARS-CoV-2 viral respiratory infections.

SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays are used for epidemiological studies and for the assessment of vaccine responses in highly vulnerable patients. So far, data on cross-reactivity of SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays is limited. Here, we compared four enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs; Vircell SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgA and IgG, Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2 IgA and IgG) for detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 207 patients with COVID-19, 178 patients with serological evidence of different bacterial infections, 107 patients with confirmed viral respiratory disease, and 80 controls from the pre-COVID-19 era. Sexually transmitted infections during pregnancy and subsequent risk of stillbirth and infant mortality in Kenya: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the relationship of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and genital infections during pregnancy and subsequent risk for infant mortality and stillbirth. METHODS: This was a nested longitudinal analysis using data from a study of peripartum HIV acquisition in Kenya. In the parent study, HIV-uninfected women were enrolled during pregnancy and followed until 9 months postpartum. For this analysis, women who tested positive for HIV at any point, had a non-singleton pregnancy or a spontaneous abortion <20 weeks were excluded. At enrolment, laboratory methods were used t

Nucleic acid amplification tests in the diagnosis of chlamydial and gonococcal infections of the oropharynx and rectum in men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Several nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are US Food and Drug Administration-cleared for detecting urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) infection, but they have not been adequately evaluated for the relatively common oropharyngeal or rectal CT and GC infections in men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: Multiple swabs were collected from the oropharynx and rectum of MSM attending a city sexually transmitted disease clinic. The specimens were tested by standard culture and the following NAATs: Roche's Amplicor (PCR), Becton Dickinson's Prob

Computational Modeling of the Chlamydial Developmental Cycle Reveals a Potential Role for Asymmetric Division.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that progresses through an essential multicell form developmental cycle. Infection of the host is initiated by the elementary body (EB). Once in the host, the EB cell differentiates into the noninfectious, but replication-competent, reticulate body, or RB. After multiple rounds of replication, RBs undergo secondary differentiation, eventually producing newly infectious EBs. Here, we generated paired cell-type promoter reporter constructs and determined the kinetics of the activities of the euo, hctA, and hctB promoters. The paired co

Mpox (Monkeypox) Virus and Its Co-Infection with HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections, or Bacterial Superinfections: Double Whammy or a New Prime Culprit?

Epidemiologic studies have established that mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreaks worldwide in 2022-2023, due to Clade IIb mpox virus (MPXV), disproportionately affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. More than 35% and 40% of the mpox cases suffer from co-infection with HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (e.g., Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, and herpes simplex virus), respectively. Bacterial superinfection can also occur. Co-infection of MPXV and other infectious agents may enhance disease severity, deteriorate outcomes

Point-of-care testing for sexually transmitted infections in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review will explore how point-of-care tests for sexually transmitted infections have been implemented into health care systems in low- and middle-income countries, and the facilitators and barriers to implementation. INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections contribute to significant global morbidity. In low- and middle-income countries, syndromic management of sexually transmitted infections is recommended. However, due to the limitations of syndromic management, there is increasing interest in the potential for point-of-care tests to be incorporated into models of care f

Distribution and risk factors of Trichomonas vaginalis infection in England: an epidemiological study using electronic health records from sexually transmitted infection clinics, 2009-2011.

We used data from the Genitourinary Medicine Clinic Activity Dataset (GUMCAD) over a 3-year period (2009-2011) to investigate the distribution and risk factors of Trichomonas vaginalis infection in England. Socio-demographic and clinical risk factors associated with a diagnosis of T. vaginalis were explored using multivariable logistic regression. Rates of T. vaginalis infection were highest in London and the West Midlands. For men and women, T. vaginalis infection was significantly associated with: older age compared to those aged 20-24 years, non-white ethnicity (in particular black Caribbea

Enhanced Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections to Foster a Learning Public Health System.

IMPORTANCE: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose a substantial public health challenge, but fragmented reporting systems have limited capacity for disease surveillance approaches that might support a learning public health system, where near real-time data-driven insights are integrated to inform, evaluate, and adapt public health strategies. OBJECTIVE: To examine how health information exchanges and open government data can be leveraged to foster a learning public health system by characterizing and comparing patterns in diagnosis vs testing at a scale commensurate with regional publi

Case report: Possible psittacosis in a military family member-clinical and public health management issues in military settings.

Chlamydia psittaci infection among humans (psittacosis) and pet birds (avian chlamydiosis), also known as parrot disease, parrot fever, and ornithosis, is a zoonotic bacterial disease. Humans most often become infected by inhaling the organism when urine, respiratory secretions, or dried feces of infected birds are dispersed in the air as very fine droplets or dust particles. C. psittaci infection of humans can cause influenza-like symptoms, such as fever of abrupt onset, pronounced headache, and dry cough, and can lead to severe pneumonia and non-respiratory health problems. Infection can als

Epididymal stereocilia in semen of infertile men: evidence of chronic epididymitis?

As free stereocilia in semen samples from infertile men could be related to a subclinical chronic infection of the seminal tract, we carried out a retrospective analysis of 14 files of infertile men with stereocilia in semen (group 1) and in two control groups: 30 infertile men from the same study population (group 2) and 40 fertile sperm donors (group 3). Clinical, bacteriological, sonographic and microscopic findings associated with these semen samples were compared. Epididymal cysts were found in two of 14 men in group 1 and in four of 28 in group 2. Positive semen cultures for Chlamydia tr

Disentangling screening and diagnostic Chlamydia test positivity among females testing at title x-funded and adolescent health clinics, san francisco 2009.

By using a reason-for-test code, we compared positivity for female chlamydia and gonorrhea. At family planning clinics, there were no statistically significant differences in screening versus diagnostic positivity for either chlamydia or gonorrhea among women. However, at adolescent health clinics, diagnostic positivity was higher than screening positivity for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Seroepidemiologic study of Chlamydia pneumoniae and other chlamydial species in a hyperendemic area for trachoma in the Sudan.

Sera of inhabitants of Angola village in central Sudan were investigated for the prevalence of antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, and C. psittaci by the microimmunofluorescence (MIF) test. Clinical examination of 616 persons showed that the village is hyperendemic for trachoma. Of the 448 children examined, 334 (75%) had signs of active trachoma. The corresponding prevalence in the 168 adults was 25%. Using MIF, antibodies to C. trachomatis were found in the sera of 27 (81%) children and of 37 (88%) adults with trachoma. Antibodies to C. pneumoniae occurred in 13% and 24% of t

Self-Reported Sexually Transmitted Infections After Incarceration in Women with or at Risk for HIV in the United States, 2007-2017.

Background: U.S. women who have been incarcerated report high rates of sexual risk behavior and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Materials and Methods: We estimated the effect of incarceration on the time to first incident STI in a multicenter cohort of U.S. women with or at risk for HIV. We used marginal structural models to compare time to first self-reported gonorrhea, chlamydia, or trichomonas infection for nonincarcerated women and incarcerated women. Covariates included demographic factors, HIV status, sex exchange, drug/alcohol use, and prior incarceration. Results: Three thousan

Pathogen transmission risk by opportunistic gulls moving across human landscapes.

Wildlife that exploit human-made habitats hosts and spreads bacterial pathogens. This shapes the epidemiology of infectious diseases and facilitates pathogen spill-over between wildlife and humans. This is a global problem, yet little is known about the dissemination potential of pathogen-infected animals. By combining molecular pathogen diagnosis with GPS tracking of pathogen-infected gulls, we show how this knowledge gap could be filled at regional scales. Specifically, we generated pathogen risk maps of Salmonella, Campylobacter and Chlamydia based on the spatial movements of pathogen-infec
