Bioactive Compounds of Porcine Hearts and Aortas May Improve Cardiovascular Disorders in Humans.

Functional foods promote health benefits in human metabolism, with bioactive compounds acting as therapeutic agents. The aim was to investigate the biological effects of a pâté made of pork hearts and aortas, minced, sterilised and packed in tins. Adults (61-66 years old) with a body mass index of 26.4-60.7 kg/m2 (n = 36) were randomly divided into two groups: one group consumed a low-calorie diet (LCD), while the other consumed an LCD with the developed meat product (MP) for 28-30 days. Serum biochemical parameters, anthropometry and blood pressure were measured. Consumption of an LCD + MP by

Statin gap in patients living with HIV: assessing dose appropriateness.

OBJECTIVES: Patients living with HIV (PLWH) are predisposed to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), resulting in concomitant antiretroviral and statin use. A statin prescribing gap for PLWH has been reported, but appropriateness of statin selection and dosing (ASD) has not been described. METHODS: This is a comparative, retrospective study reviewing ASD in PLWH vs. uninfected patients at two outpatient clinics within an academic medical centre. Adults > 21 years old indicated for statin therapy were included. The primary outcome was percentage of PLWH prescribed an appropriately do

Variations in time to benefit among clinical trials of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

BACKGROUND: Time to benefit (TTB) in clinical trials of cholesterol-lowering drugs is important because it may provide a clue as to the potential mechanism of action of the drug, it is helpful in determining when to stop a trial for futility, and it may inform treatment decisions in subjects with reduced life expectancy. OBJECTIVE: To compare TTB among clinical trials of cholesterol-lowering drugs. METHODS: We examined TTB in 24 trials of cholesterol-lowering drugs with positive outcomes. Benefit curves were constructed by subtracting the curve for a placebo or comparator drug from the curve

Reprint of: Impact of Lipids on Cardiovascular Health: JACC Health Promotion Series.

People who maintain ideal cardiovascular heath have a low lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, encouraging people to achieve ideal cardiovascular health represents an important opportunity to improve the prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, preventing cardiovascular disease by promoting ideal cardiovascular health requires shifting the focus from treating disease after it develops to preventing cardiovascular events before they happen by slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. Because atherogenic lipoproteins play a central causal role in the initiation and progres

Cholesteryl-ester transfer protein enhances the ability of high-density lipoprotein to inhibit low-density lipoprotein oxidation.

Therapeutic strategies to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) to treat or prevent vascular disease include the use of cholesteryl-ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors. Here, we show, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, that addition of CETP to HDL enhances the ability of HDL to inhibit low-density lipoprotein oxidation by ∼ 30% for total HDL and HDL(2) (both P < 0.05) and 75% for HDL(3) (P < 0.01). Therefore, CETP inhibition may be detrimental to the antiatherosclerotic properties of HDL, and these findings may partly explain the failure of the CETP inhibitor, torcetrapib,

Recent progress in the development of radioimmunoassays for human serum lipoproteins.

A review of radioimmunoassays for measuring human apolipoprotein B (apo B), the A apolipoproteins of high density lipoprotein (apo A-I and apo A-II) and apolipoprotein C-II (apo C-II) in human plasma and in isolated lipoproteins is presented. The sensitivity, specificity and validity of each of these assays is discussed. In normolipidemic subjects the reported serum apo B concentrations ranged between 0.83 +/- 0.16 and 0.92 +/- 0.21 g per l (m +/- SD). Serum apo B concentrations were highest in Type II subjects (Type IIa homozygotes 3.83 +/- 0.43 g per l; Type IIa heterozygotes 2.37 +/- 0.47 g

Application of a dynamic colonic gastrointestinal digestion model to red wines: a study of flavanol metabolism by the gut microbiota and the cardioprotective activity of microbial metabolites.

Over the last decade, research has emphasized the role of the microbiome in regulating cardiovascular physiology and disease progression. Understanding the interplay between wine polyphenols, the gut microbiota, and cardiovascular health could provide valuable insights for uncovering novel therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing and managing cardiovascular disease. In this study, two commercial red wines were subjected to in vitro dynamic gastrointestinal digestion (GIS) to monitor the flavanol-microbiota interaction by evaluating the resulting microbial metabolites. Furthermore, the cardio

Implication of Lipids in Calcified Aortic Valve Pathogenesis: Why Did Statins Fail?

Calcific Aortic Valve Disease (CAVD) is a fibrocalcific disease. Lipoproteins and oxidized phospholipids play a substantial role in CAVD; the level of Lp(a) has been shown to accelerate the progression of valve calcification. Indeed, oxidized phospholipids carried by Lp(a) into the aortic valve stimulate endothelial dysfunction and promote inflammation. Inflammation and growth factors actively promote the synthesis of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and trigger an osteogenic program. The accumulation of ECM proteins promotes lipid adhesion to valve tissue, which could initiate the osteogenic pr

Metabolic and laboratory effects of a progestin-only pill containing drospirenone 4 mg in comparison to desogestrel 75 µg: a double-blind, double-dummy, prospective, randomised study.

Purpose: Steroid hormones in hormonal contraceptives influence a variety of metabolic parameters. Mainly, ethinyloestradiol (EE) in combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) is a potent inducer of hepatic coagulation factors, has an impact on cholesterol and triglyceride levels and glucose tolerance. Progestins in CHC modify the oestrogen effects in different ways, depending on their pharmacologic properties. The metabolic impact of progestin-only contraceptives is generally considered low. Methods: The influence of novel drospirenone (DRSP)-only pill (4 mg DRSP in 24/4 intake) on a variety of lip

Machine learning and blood pressure.

Machine learning (ML) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) based on pattern recognition. There are different forms of supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms that are being used to identify and predict blood pressure (BP) and other measures of cardiovascular risk. Since 1999, starting with neural network methods, ML has been used to gauge the relationship between BP and pulse wave forms. Since then, the scope of the research has expanded to using different cardiometabolic risk factors like BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio in concert with BP and its various pharmaceutic

Nutrition assessment in HIV infection.

Nutrition assessment is a vital component of the general care of HIV-infected adults. With access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV infection may become a chronic, manageable disease. Nutritional and metabolic complications traditionally associated with HIV infection such as hypertriglyceridemia, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and weight loss continue to occur. However, emerging abnormalities such as regional alterations in body shape (fat re-distribution syndrome or HIV-associated lipodystrophy), increasing body weight, high levels of low-density

Firefighters and the liver: Exposure to PFAS and PAHs in relation to liver function and serum lipids (CELSPAC-FIREexpo study).

INTRODUCTION: Firefighting is one of the most hazardous occupations due to exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Such exposure is suspected to affect the cardiometabolic profile, e.g., liver function and serum lipids. However, only a few studies have investigated the impact of this specific exposure among firefighters. METHODS: Men included in the CELSPAC-FIREexpo study were professional firefighters (n = 52), newly recruited firefighters in training (n = 58), and controls (n = 54). They completed exposure questionnaires and provid

Associations between Serum Vitamin A and Metabolic Risk Factors among Eastern Chinese Children and Adolescents.

Vitamin A, a fat-soluble essential vitamin, is implicated in a large range of physiological processes. Up to now, the associations between vitamin A and metabolic syndrome (MetS) or other metabolic risk factors are controversial in children and adolescents. Thus, we aimed to dig into the relationship of vitamin A with MetS and many other metabolic risk factors. This was a cross-sectional study derived from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance of Children and Lactating Mothers. A total of 3025 school-aged (7-17 years) children and adolescents were selected by applying multistage
