Bidirectional Causal Association Between Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Cardiovascular Diseases: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies have demonstrated links between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the causal relationship between COPD and CVDs and the reverse causality remains divergent. METHODS: Exposure and outcome data from the largest available genome-wide association studies were extracted for Mendelian randomization (MR) studies. Univariate MR analysis was performed using IVW as the primary analysis method, and multiple sensitivity analyses were used to enhance the robustness of the results. Furthermore, this was followed b

Association between chronic diseases and severe periodontal disease progression: A retrospective cohort study in a city of Japan.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontal disease primarily causes tooth loss and oral frailty and is linked to chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus. However, its progression and broader studies on chronic diseases have not been well explored. This study aimed to investigate this association using claims data. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used linked medical, dental, and pharmacy claims data from a local municipality in Japan. The study included participants aged 40-70 years who had received medical care between April 2017 and March 2018. Exposures included age, sex, and common chro

The burden of chronic diseases, disease-stratified exploration and gender-differentiated healthcare utilisation among patients in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are considered one of the major causes of illness, disability, and death worldwide. Chronic illness leads to a huge health and economic burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This study examined disease-stratified healthcare utilisation (HCU) among Bangladesh patients with chronic diseases from a gender perspective. METHODS: Data from the nationally representative Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2016-2017 consisting of 12,005 patients with diagnosed chronic diseases was used. Gender differentiated chronic disease stratified-analytical expl

Comparison Between Burden of Care Partners of Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease Versus Individuals with Other Chronic Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is often provided by informal care partners, who spend more hours per week on average than care partners of individuals with conditions other than AD. However, the burden of care in partners of individuals with AD has not been systematically compared to that of other chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE: The current study therefore aims to compare the care partner burden of AD to that of other chronic diseases through a systematic literature review. METHODS: Data was collected from journal articles published in the last 10 years, using two unique sea

Inflammatory skin diseases and the risk of chronic kidney disease: population-based case-control and cohort analyses.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests an association between common inflammatory skin diseases and chronic kidney disease (CKD). OBJECTIVES: To explore the association between CKD stages 3-5 (CKD3-5) and atopic eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and hidradenitis suppurativa. METHODS: We undertook two complementary analyses; a prevalent case-control study and a cohort study using routinely collected primary care data [UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)]. We matched individuals with CKD3-5 in CPRD in March 2018 with up to five individuals without CKD for general practitioner practice, age

Genetic kidney diseases as an underrecognized cause of chronic kidney disease: the key role of international registry reports.

Inherited kidney diseases (IKDs) are among the leading causes of early-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are responsible for at least 10-15% of cases of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in adults. Paediatric nephrologists are very aware of the high prevalence of IKDs among their patients, but this is not the case for adult nephrologists. Recent publications have demonstrated that monogenic diseases account for a significant percentage of adult cases of CKD. A substantial number of these patients have received a non-specific/incorrect diagnosis or a diagnosis of CKD of unknown aetiology, w

Inflammation and fibrosis in chronic liver diseases including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatitis C.

At present chronic liver disease (CLD), the third commonest cause of premature death in the United Kingdom is detected late, when interventions are ineffective, resulting in considerable morbidity and mortality. Injury to the liver, the largest solid organ in the body, leads to a cascade of inflammatory events. Chronic inflammation leads to the activation of hepatic stellate cells that undergo trans-differentiation to become myofibroblasts, the main extra-cellular matrix producing cells in the liver; over time increased extra-cellular matrix production results in the formation of liver fibrosi

[Bronchial dilatations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a Tunisian center: effect on disease progression and prognosis].

INTRODUCTION: bronchial dilations (BDs) seem to have a major role in the natural history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The purpose of our study was to evaluate the impact of BDs on the severity and progression of COPD as well as on patients' prognosis. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective, single-center, analytical study over the period 1995- 2017. The study was based on data from the medical records of patients with COPD who had undergone chest CT scan during the follow-up period. We compared two groups (G) of patients: G1: COPD with BDs; G2: COPD without BDs. RESULTS: o

Oral and nasal probiotic administration for the prevention and alleviation of allergic diseases, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Interaction between a healthy microbiome and the immune system leads to body homeostasis, as dysbiosis in microbiome content and loss of diversity may result in disease development. Due to the ability of probiotics to help and modify microbiome constitution, probiotics are now widely used for the prevention and treatment of different gastrointestinal, inflammatory, and, more recently, respiratory diseases. In this regard, chronic respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and allergic rhinitis are among the most common and complicated respiratory diseas

Increased Burden of Vision Impairment and Eye Diseases in Persons with Chronic Kidney Disease - A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been shown to be associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), leading causes of blindness in elderly adults in previous studies. However, the association of CKD with visual impairment (VI) is not clear. We aimed to examine the association of CKD with VI and other age-related ocular diseases in a population-based sample of Asian adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from 10,033 adults aged 40-80 years who participated in the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases (SEED, 2004-11) Study. CKD was defined as an estim

The combination of chronic kidney disease and increased arterial stiffness is a predictor for stroke and cardiovascular disease in hypertensive patients.

To clarify the clinical utility of pulse wave velocity (PWV) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in hypertension, we analyzed the prognostic impact of PWV and CKD on cerebrocardiovascular disease in hypertensive patients. This study consisted of 531 patients with essential hypertension (male/female=292/239, mean age=61.7±12.3, mean follow-up=7.0±3.0 years) and was performed between January 1998 and June 2004. We used questionnaires to assess stroke (n=57), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs; myocardial infarction, angina and congestive heart failure; n=44) and death (n=53) as primary end points. At ba

Echocardiographic evaluation of heart in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient and its co-relation with the severity of disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has considerable effects on cardiac functions, including those of the right ventricle, left ventricle, and pulmonary blood vessels. Most of the increased mortality associated with COPD is due to cardiac involvement. Echocardiography provides a rapid, noninvasive, portable, and accurate method to evaluate the cardiac changes. AIMS: To assess the cardiac changes secondary to COPD by echocardiography and to find out the correlation between echocardiographic findings and severity of COPD, if there is any. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total 40

The impact of chronic kidney disease as a predictor of major cardiac events in patients with no evidence of coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Normal stress myocardial perfusion images (MPI) generally show good prognosis for cardiovascular events. However, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the important risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD), and the interpretation of normal stress MPI has not been well established in CKD patients with no evidence of CAD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term prognostic value of stress MPI in CKD patients with no evidence of myocardial ischemia or infarction. METHODS: Patients who had no history but were suspected of CAD and had normal stress MPI (n=307, ma

[Extremely high frequency therapy for the prevention of acute respiratory diseases in children with chronic ENT and allergic diseases].

Extremely high frequency (EHF) therapy (42.19 +/- 0.10 GHz; 5.6 mm) is an efficacious method for the prevention of acute respiratory diseases (ARD) in frequently ill children presenting with chronic ENT diseases (chronic tonsillitis, chronic sinusitis) and allergic reactions (allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis). It helped to reduce ARD morbidity, duration of a single ARD episode, and frequency of bacterial complications per one child during the 6 and 12 month-long observation periods in comparison with the patients of the placebo group. It is believed that prophylactic effect of EHF therapy

Autoimmunity to pancreatic juice in Crohn's disease. Results of an autoantibody screening in patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

The sera of 59 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and of 46 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) were tested for autoantibodies (Aab) by indirect immunofluorescence with modern histochemical techniques using 19 different human tissues as antigenic substrates. Control collectives consisted of 19 patients with coeliac disease and of 100 healthy subjects. It was possible to demonstrate a specific marker for CD: Aab against exocrine pancreas (Pab) were present in 39% of the CD sera (UC 4%, coeliac disease 0%, healthy controls 3%). High Pab titres were only detectable in CD sera (29%). The CD-rela

[Severity and extent of coronary artery disease and their relationship to left ventricular functional reserve in the chronic disease state].

Our previous observations showed that left ventricular wall motion abnormality (asynergy) induced by stress was observed in the phase response of radionuclide technique, and the severity and extent of coronary artery disease (CAD) assessed by the Pujadas score (PS) correlated well with the maximal phase delay response (delta MPD) but not with the ejection fraction response (delta EF) in patients with CAD without old myocardial infarction (MI). This study evaluated the usefulness of EF, MPD and the first-third filling fraction (FF, divided by the volume accrued throughout diastole) at rest and

Comorbidity Between Mood Disorders and Chronic Somatic Diseases, With a Focus on Cardiometabolic Disease, and Its Mechanistic Crosstalk.

The comorbidity of mood disorders (MDs), represented by depression and anxiety, with chronic somatic diseases (CDs), particularly cardiometabolic conditions, poses a significant global public health challenge, markedly increasing the risk of adverse prognoses and all-cause mortality. Epidemiological studies indicate that ~36% of patients with multimorbidity exhibit psychosomatic comorbidity, with higher risk populations concentrated among females, older adults, and socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. This review systematically analyzes the epidemiological distribution patterns of MD-C
