Epidemiological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the bladder.

Recent incidence data from the United States indicate that transitional cell carcinoma accounts for the vast majority (95%) of bladder tumors in this country, with squamous cell carcinoma (less than 3%) and adenocarcinoma (less than 2%) comprising nearly all the remaining cases. Rates of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were higher in blacks compared to whites, while the reverse was true for transitional cell carcinoma. All three tumors predominated in males, especially transitional cell carcinoma. A population-based case-control study of bladder cancer conducted in 10 geographical a

Airway cell-cell communication in smoking through integration of spatial and single-cell transcriptomics.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has a significant impact on global health. Although cessation has positive health benefits, some molecular changes to intercellular communications may persist in the lung. In this study we created a workflow to generate hypotheses by predicting altered cell-cell communication in smoker lungs using single-cell and spatial transcriptomic data. METHODS: We integrated publicly available lung single-cell transcriptomic data (n = 104) with spatial transcriptomic data (n = 2) from never-smoker and current-smoker airway samples to create spatial transcriptomic data at vi

Pulmonary Vascular Remodeling in Smokers: A Systematic Review of Quantitative CT and Histologic Evidence.

Pulmonary vascular remodeling is increasingly recognized as an important yet underappreciated component of smoking-related lung disease and may contribute to the early development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in susceptible individuals. This systematic review examined human studies evaluating the association between cigarette smoking and quantitative measures of pulmonary vascular remodeling assessed through histologic analysis or computed tomography (CT). A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus covering publications from 1990 to 2024 identified eight eligible studies, including

Smoke signals in the genome: Epigenetic consequences of parental tobacco exposure (Review).

Tobacco use continues to pose a significant public health challenge, not only due to its immediate toxic effects but also because of its long-lasting epigenetic consequences. The present review explores the complex and evolving field of epigenetics to examine how maternal, paternal and even grandparental smoking can alter the heritable regulation of gene expression, with consequences that span multiple generations. The focus is placed on DNA methylation as a central mechanism mediating these effects, particularly in the placenta and germ cells. Evidence from human cohort studies and animal mod

Impact of tobacco education on pharmacy students' perceptions of electronic nicotine delivery systems.

OBJECTIVE: Describe how receiving tobacco education within the PharmD curriculum affects 1) students' perceptions and knowledge of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and 2) willingness to counsel on cessation. METHODS: Eight institutions used a 29-item questionnaire to assess P1-P4 students' tobacco use, ENDS knowledge, cessation education, and perceptions in the fall of 2020. Students were divided into those who had received tobacco cessation education and those who had not. RESULTS: 832 pharmacy students participated in the study with a 28% response rate. 56% of respondents were r

The effect of demographic characteristics on the relationship between smoking and dry mouth in Iran: a cross-sectional, case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: The effect of age, sex, and other demographic factors on the relationship between smoking and dry mouth remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of demographic characteristics on the relationship between dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, and smoking. METHODS: This case-control study included 5,640 randomly-selected subjects from the second phase of the Kerman Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors Study, which observed 10,000 participants from 2014 to 2018. A checklist was used to record the participants' demographic characteristics and smoking freque

Abstinence and retention outcomes in a smoking cessation program among individuals with co-morbid substance use and mental disorders.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Although cigarette smoking prevalence has decreased, there are still disparities in morbidity and mortality experienced by individuals with substance use and/or mental disorders when compared to general population. The aim of this study was to compare treatment outcomes between three subgroups of smokers: individuals with substance use disorder (SUD-only), individuals with mental disorder without substance use disorders (MD-only), and individuals with co-morbid substance use and mental disorder (SUD + MD). Data of 498 smokers

High prevalence of airway obstruction and pulmonary emphysema in urothelial (renal pelvis, ureter, and bladder) cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a major cause of COPD, with patients also presenting complications that stem from other smoking-related diseases, including urothelial cancer. However, the prevalence of COPD or airflow obstruction in urothelial cancer patients has not been well studied. METHODS: We investigated the prevalence of airflow obstruction (FEV1/FVC < 70%) in newly diagnosed urothelial cancer patients and identified the risk factors for airflow obstruction in existing urothelial cancer patients. Additionally, we compared the characteristics of subjects who had been diagnosed with bot

Rationale, design and pilot feasibility results of a smartphone-assisted, mindfulness-based intervention for smokers with mood disorders: Project mSMART MIND.

BACKGROUND: Although individuals with psychiatric disorders are disproportionately affected by cigarette smoking, few outpatient mental health treatment facilities offer smoking cessation services. In this paper, we describe the development of a smartphone-assisted mindfulness smoking cessation intervention with contingency management (SMI-CM), as well as the design and methods of an ongoing pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) targeting smokers receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment. We also report the results of an open-label pilot feasibility study. METHODS: In phase 1, we developed

Are Vocal Alterations Caused by Smoking in Reinke's Edema in Women Entirely Reversible After Microsurgery and Smoking Cessation?

BACKGROUND: Reinke's edema is a benign lesion of the vocal folds that affects chronic smokers, especially women. The voice becomes hoarse and virilized, and the treatment is microsurgery. However, even after surgery and smoking cessation, many patients remain with a deep and hoarse voice. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare pre- and postoperative acoustic and perceptual-auditory vocal analyses of women with Reinke's edema and of women in the control group, who were non-smokers. METHODS: A total of 20 women with videolaryngoscopy diagnosis of Reinke's edema who underwent l

Predictors of adherence to pharmacological and behavioral treatment in a cessation trial among smokers in Aleppo, Syria.

INTRODUCTION: The development of evidence-based smoking cessation programs is in its infancy in developing countries, which continue to bear the main brunt of the tobacco epidemic. Adherence to treatment recommendations is an important determinant of the success of smoking cessation programs, but little is known about factors influencing adherence to either pharmacological or behavioral treatment in developing countries settings. Our study represents the first attempt to examine the predictors of adherence to cessation treatment in a low-income developing country. METHODS: Predictors of adher

Relationships of PROP Taste Phenotype, Taste Receptor Genotype, and Oral Nicotine Replacement Use.

INTRODUCTION: Recommended dosage of oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product is often not achieved in smoking cessation attempts. n-6-propylthiouracil (PROP) bitter taste phenotype may be a potential risk factor for non-adherence to oral NRT products due to their bitter taste. There is limited literature on this phenotype in the context of smoking and none in relation to oral NRT pharmacotherapy. METHODS: The association of PROP taste phenotype with NRT usage and sensory response to products was examined. In a cross-over experimental design, 120 participants received a 1 week supply of

Impaired sleep quality and sleep duration in smokers-results from the German Multicenter Study on Nicotine Dependence.

Cigarette smoking is a severe health burden being related to a number of chronic diseases. Frequently, smokers report about sleep problems. Sleep disturbance, in turn, has been demonstrated to be involved in the pathophysiology of several disorders related to smoking and may be relevant for the pathophysiology of nicotine dependence. Therefore, determining the frequency of sleep disturbance in otherwise healthy smokers and its association with degree of nicotine dependence is highly relevant. In a population-based case-control study, 1071 smokers and 1243 non-smokers without lifetime Diagnosti

A review of smoking cessation interventions for smokers aged 50 and older.

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoking poses substantial health risks at any age, but is particularly dangerous for older smokers, who are already at heightened risk for various health conditions. Studies suggest that older smokers are motivated to quit and succeed, but few of these have been randomized controlled trials. There is a need to systematically evaluate the research on effective interventions in older smokers. METHODS: We followed PRISMA guidelines in the development of this systematic review, which included randomized controlled trials of cessation interventions with smokers aged 50 or old

Prevalence of classical risk factors in Polish women with premature coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: It is generally believed that in 50% of perimenopausal women several factors other than classical risk factors play a significant role in the development of premature coronary artery disease (CAD). AIM: To determine the prevalence of five classical risk factors (cigarette smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and obesity) in women aged〈 55 years with premature CAD. METHODS: We performed a single-centre, case-control study in women〈 55 years with angiographically confirmed CAD or troponin-positive acute coronary syndrome. Acute effects of nicotine withdrawal syndrome in pilots during flight.

BACKGROUND: Pilots who smoke are occasionally obliged to abstain from nicotine intake during flight and may during this period exhibit certain symptoms leading to performance decrement. METHODS: We studied 20 healthy male aviators, who were regular smokers, (mean age 33.7 +/- 1.4 yr) operating military fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft (C-47 Dakota, F-16, A. Bell 205). All pilots were subjected to a 12-h abstinence from cigarette smoking, during which time they performed flight duties. After landing, we studied the intensity of the nicotine withdrawal syndrome, as well as its effect on physiolo

Urban Indians' smoking patterns and interest in quitting.

Little is known about smoking patterns of urban American Indians and their interest in quitting. Most published research has focused upon American Indians who live on rural reservations. In this study, personal interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of patients at Urban Indian Health Clinics in four geographically diverse sites: Milwaukee, WI, Minneapolis, MN, and Seattle and Spokane, WA. A total of 419 current smokers and 173 ex-smokers completed interviews. Current smokers reported a median cigarette consumption of 11 per day. Smokers indicated both a moderate desire to quit (me
