Multi-modality machine learning predicting Parkinson's disease.

Personalized medicine promises individualized disease prediction and treatment. The convergence of machine learning (ML) and available multimodal data is key moving forward. We build upon previous work to deliver multimodal predictions of Parkinson's disease (PD) risk and systematically develop a model using GenoML, an automated ML package, to make improved multi-omic predictions of PD, validated in an external cohort. We investigated top features, constructed hypothesis-free disease-relevant networks, and investigated drug-gene interactions. We performed automated ML on multimodal data from t

An explainable deep learning-based algorithm with an attention mechanism for predicting the live birth potential of mouse embryos.

In assisted reproductive technology (ART), embryos produced by in vitro fertilization (IVF) are graded according to their live birth potential, and high-grade embryos are preferentially transplanted. However, rates of live birth following clinical ART remain low worldwide. Grading is based on the embryo shape at a limited number of stages and does not consider the shape of embryos and intracellular structures, e.g., nuclei, at various stages important for normal embryogenesis. Here, we developed a Normalized Multi-View Attention Network (NVAN) that directly predicts live birth potential from t

Robotic Intracellular Electrochemical Sensing for Adherent Cells.

Nanopipette-based observation of intracellular biochemical processes is an important approach to revealing the intrinsic characteristics and heterogeneity of cells for better investigation of disease progression or early disease diagnosis. However, the manual operation needs a skilled operator and faces problems such as low throughput and poor reproducibility. This paper proposes an automated nanopipette-based microoperation system for cell detection, three-dimensional nonovershoot positioning of the nanopipette tip in proximity to the cell of interest, cell approaching and proximity detection

Type 2 myocardial infarction: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in contemporary cardiology.

In the expanding world of cardiovascular diseases, rapidly reaching pandemic proportions, the main focus is still on coronary atherosclerosis and its clinical consequences. However, at least in the Western world, middle-aged male patients with acute myocardial infarction are no more the rule. Due to a higher life expectancy and major medical advances, physicians are to treat older and frailer individuals, usually with multiple comorbidities. In this context, myocardial ischaemia and infarction frequently result from an imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand-i.e., type 2 myocardi

Revisiting the recombinant history of HIV-1 group M with dynamic network community detection.

The prevailing abundance of full-length HIV type 1 (HIV-1) genome sequences provides an opportunity to revisit the standard model of HIV-1 group M (HIV-1/M) diversity that clusters genomes into largely nonrecombinant subtypes, which is not consistent with recent evidence of deep recombinant histories for simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and other HIV-1 groups. Here we develop an unsupervised nonparametric clustering approach, which does not rely on predefined nonrecombinant genomes, by adapting a community detection method developed for dynamic social network analysis. We show that this met

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound features of focal pancreatic lesions in cats.

A large overlap in the ultrasound (US) features of focal pancreatic lesions (FPLs) in cats is reported. Furthermore, only a small number of studies describing the contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) features of FPLs in cats have been conducted today. The aim of this study is to describe the B-mode US and CEUS features of FPLs in cats. Ninety-eight cats cytologically diagnosed with FPL were included. The lesions were classified as adenocarcinoma (n = 40), lymphoma (n = 11), nodular hyperplasia (n = 17), other benign lesion (OBL) (n = 20), cyst (n = 4) or other malignant lesion (OML) (n = 6). Se

Morbidity related to the lip-split mandibulotomy approach: a systematic and narrative review.

The lip-split mandibulotomy (LSMA) is an access procedure that has been used in head and neck (H&N) surgery as an aid to surgical resection of inaccessible tumours of the postertior oral cavity and oropharynx. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it has significant morbidity. Voices of concern within the H&N surgical community suggest that it has been abandoned in favour of technological advances such as robotic surgery. We report here the first (to our knowledge) registered systematic review of its kind, documenting the safety and efficiency of LSMA in H&N surgery. We performed a PRISMA-guided sy

Semi-Supervised Anomaly Detection in Video-Surveillance Scenes in the Wild.

Surveillance cameras are being installed in many primary daily living places to maintain public safety. In this video-surveillance context, anomalies occur only for a very short time, and very occasionally. Hence, manual monitoring of such anomalies may be exhaustive and monotonous, resulting in a decrease in reliability and speed in emergency situations due to monitor tiredness. Within this framework, the importance of automatic detection of anomalies is clear, and, therefore, an important amount of research works have been made lately in this topic. According to these earlier studies, superv

Application of machine learning to predict reduction in total PANSS score and enrich enrollment in schizophrenia clinical trials.

Clinical trial efficiency, defined as facilitating patient enrollment, and reducing the time to reach safety and efficacy decision points, is a critical driving factor for making improvements in therapeutic development. The present work evaluated a machine learning (ML) approach to improve phase II or proof-of-concept trials designed to address unmet medical needs in treating schizophrenia. Diagnostic data from the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) trial were used to develop a binary classification ML model predicting individual patient response as either "imp

The emergency medicine management of clavicle fractures.

BACKGROUND: Clavicle fractures are common. An emergency physician needs to understand the diagnostic classifications of clavicle fractures, have a plan for immobilization, identify associated injuries, understand the difference between treating pediatric and adult patients, and have an approach to multimodal pain control. It is also important to understand when expert orthopedic consultation or referral is indicated. OBJECTIVE OF THE REVIEW: To provide an evidence-based review of clavicle fracture management in the emergency department. DISCUSSION: Clavicle fractures account for up to 4% of

Nonlinear Optics with Near-Infrared Excitation Enable Real-Time Quantitative Diagnosis of Human Cervical Cancers.

Histopathologic analysis through biopsy has been one of the most useful methods for the assessment of malignant neoplasms. However, some aspects of the analysis such as invasiveness, evaluation range, and turnaround time from biopsy to report could be improved. Here, we report a novel method for visualizing human cervical tissue three-dimensionally, without biopsy, fixation, or staining, and with sufficient quality for histologic diagnosis. Near-infrared excitation and nonlinear optics were employed to visualize unstained human epithelial tissues of the cervix uteri by constructing images with

Value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome-a new ultrasonographic index in carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis: A clinical study.

We analyze the effectiveness of ultrasonography in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and propose the use of sonographic index of median nerve (MN) in carpal tunnel (SIMNCT) in a diagnostic algorithm and in establishing a scale of severity. We studied a group of 344 patients with CTS symptoms, examining them by ultrasound. We measured in all patients, on the affected hand: the size of the cross-sectional area of the MN at carpal tunnel (CT) inlet and outlet, nerve morphology at passage through CT, the vertical thickness of the MN entering into the CT - G1, the lowest vertical thickness int

Deep learning classification of early normal-tension glaucoma and glaucoma suspects using Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width and RNFL.

We aimed to classify early normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and glaucoma suspect (GS) using Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and the color classification of RNFL based on a deep-learning model. Discriminating early-stage glaucoma and GS is challenging and a deep-learning model may be helpful to clinicians. NTG accounts for an average 77% of open-angle glaucoma in Asians. BMO-MRW is a new structural parameter that has advantages in assessing neuroretinal rim tissue more accurately than conventional parameters. A dataset consisted

Array testing for multiplex assays.

Group testing involves pooling individual specimens (e.g., blood, urine, swabs, etc.) and testing the pools for the presence of disease. When the proportion of diseased individuals is small, group testing can greatly reduce the number of tests needed to screen a population. Statistical research in group testing has traditionally focused on applications for a single disease. However, blood service organizations and large-scale disease surveillance programs are increasingly moving towards the use of multiplex assays, which measure multiple disease biomarkers at once.
