How ABBA may help improve neonatal resuscitation training: auditory prompts to enable coordination of manual inflations and chest compressions.

AIM: Resuscitation guidelines recommend 90 chest compressions (CCs) and 30 inflations (INFs) per minute for neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (nCPR). We hypothesised that auditory prompts would help coordinate these actions. Our aim was to investigate the effect of musical prompts during nCPR training on adherence to recommended CC and INF rates and on the quality of delivered INFs. METHODS: A simulation study was conducted employing 30 experienced neonatal staff, a respiratory function monitor and a neonatal manikin. The effects of five different auditory prompts on adherence to recomme

Learning to account for the social determinants of health affecting homeless persons.

CONTEXT: Intersecting social determinants of health constrain access to care and treatment adherence among homeless populations. Because clinicians seldom receive training in the social determinants of health, they may be unprepared to account for or address these factors when developing treatment strategies for homeless individuals. OBJECTIVES: This study explored: (i) clinicians' preparedness to provide care responsive to the social determinants of health in homeless populations, and (ii) the steps taken by clinicians to overcome shortcomings in their clinical training in regard to the soci

Attitudes, knowledge and prescribing habits of Brazilian gynecologists regarding extended-cycle oral contraceptives.

Extended-cycle and continuous use combined oral contraceptives (COC) have been widely investigated; however, gynecologists' prescribing habits are largely unknown. This study evaluated the opinions and prescribing habits of Brazilian gynecologists regarding extended/continuous COC. Gynecologists caring for reproductive-age women and used to prescribing COC were recruited to an online survey. Overall, 1097 physicians were included. Of these, 93.0% stated that patients requested extended/continuous COC, with 93.9% of the physicians having already prescribed these regimens at least once. Only 67

Why give birth in health facility? Users' and providers' accounts of poor quality of birth care in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In Tanzania, half of all pregnant women access a health facility for delivery. The proportion receiving skilled care at birth is even lower. In order to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, the government has set out to increase health facility deliveries by skilled care. The aim of this study was to describe the weaknesses in the provision of acceptable and adequate quality care through the accounts of women who have suffered obstetric fistula, nurse-midwives at both BEmOC and CEmOC health facilities and local community members. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews involving 1

Sexual abuse history in GI illness, how do gastroenterologists deal with it?

INTRODUCTION: Data support an increased prevalence of sexual abuse (SA) among patients with gastrointestinal (GI) complaints. Sexual abuse causes multiple symptoms related to pelvic floor and stress mediated brain-gut dysfunctions. Treating these patients asks for a holistic approach, using centrally targeted interventions. However, gastroenterologists have never been surveyed regarding their practice patterns and constraints about inquiring into SA. AIM: To evaluate whether gastroenterologists address SA in their daily practice and to evaluate their knowledge regarding the implications of SA

"They silently live in terror…" why sleep problems and night-time related quality-of-life are missed in children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Children and adolescents with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are at high-risk for developing sleep problems (SPs) triggering daytime behavioral co-morbidities such as inattention, hyperactivity, and cognitive and emotional impairments. However, symptoms of sleep deprivation are solely associated with typical daytime diagnosis, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treated with psychotropic medications. To understand how and why SPs are missed, we conducted qualitative interviews (QIs) with six parents and seven health care professionals (HCPs), and performed com
