Impaired learning and memory in Pitx3 deficient aphakia mice: a genetic model for striatum-dependent cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

Disorders of the basal ganglia such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease are commonly thought of primarily as motor disorders; however, the cognitive symptoms of these diseases such as executive dysfunction, learning, memory and attention deficits are prominent and often more disabling than the hallmark motor symptoms. Cognitive features of PD are often neglected in preclinical studies of PD, likely due to the lack of available animal models to study them. Aphakia mice, which are deficient in the transcription factor Pitx3, model the selective nigrostriatal DA loss in PD. Here

Relationship of cognitions to fear of somatic symptoms: a test of the cognitive theory of panic.

The relationship between fear of physical anxiety symptoms and cognitive misinterpretation of those symptoms, as measured by responses to the Body Sensations Questionnaire and the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire, respectively, was examined for two samples of outpatients with panic disorder. Factor analytic and correlational analyses demonstrated that the patients' self-rated fear of specific physical and psychological symptoms was related to the frequency of specific logically related catastrophic thoughts (e.g., fears of heart palpitations or chest pressure with thoughts of a heart attac

Ocular Motor Control and Cognitive Function in Military Veterans With Chronic Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Ocular motor control (OMC) and cognitive dysfunction are common persistent sequelae in persons with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Combat and training operations frequently expose military Service Members to biomechanical and blast events that render them susceptible to mTBI, and problems such as OMC disturbances and cognitive dysfunction are frequent long after injury. However, these problems can be difficult to detect, often only becoming clinically evident with physical or psychological stress. Knowledge of the relationship between OMC and cognitive dysfunction in chronic m

Linking cognitive flexibility, planning, and autistic traits: The mediating role of cognitive abilities.

Autistic children often face cognitive challenges, particularly in executive functions (EFs). Previous research has explored the relationship between EFs and autistic traits, including social abilities and restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRBs). While some consistencies emerge from ecologically valid ratings, results from performance-based measures and studies combining lab tasks with parent reports remain inconsistent. This study investigated associations between EFs and autistic traits, focusing on the mediating role of cognitive abilities. We assessed 110 autistic participants aged 4-1

Evaluating patterns and predictors of symptom change during a three-week intensive outpatient treatment for veterans with PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Intensive delivery of evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is becoming increasingly popular for overcoming barriers to treatment for veterans. Understanding how and for whom these intensive treatments work is critical for optimizing their dissemination. The goals of the current study were to evaluate patterns of PTSD and depression symptom change over the course of a 3-week cohort-based intensive outpatient program (IOP) for veterans with PTSD, examine changes in posttraumatic cognitions as a predictor of treatment response, and determine whether patter

The relationship between HIV and prevalence of disabilities in sub-Saharan Africa: systematic review (FA).

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review evidence on the prevalence and risk of disabilities among children and adults living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Articles were identified from 1980 to June 2013 through searching seven electronic databases. Epidemiological studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa that explored the association between HIV status and general disability or specific impairments, with or without an HIV-uninfected comparison group, were eligible for inclusion. RESULTS: Of 12 867 records initially identified, 61 papers were deemed eligible for inclusion. The prevalenc

Quantification of upper limb skills in elderly rehabilitative inpatients: a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Aging has a recognized degenerative effect on the functionality of the hand in terms of strength and dexterity. Despite this, there are few studies in literature that quantify the upper limb skills in the elderly. AIM: The aim was to present quantitative data regarding upper limb functionality in the elderly and to quantify the effect of aging on them, considering the influence of the comorbidities, of the global level of autonomy, of the cognitive status and of the mood, which are typically compromised in the elderly. DESIGN: It was a controlled study. SETTING: It was settled i

Cognitive motor interference during dual-task gait in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Functional ambulation requires concurrent performance of motor and cognitive tasks, which may create interference (degraded performance) in either or both tasks. People with essential tremor (ET) demonstrate impairments in gait and cognitive function. In this study we examined the extent of interference between gait and cognition in people with ET and controls during dual-task gait. METHODS: We tested 62 controls and 151 ET participants (age range: 72-102). ET participants were divided into two groups based on median score on the modified Mini Mental State Examination. The level and nature of autistic intelligence II: what about Asperger syndrome?

A distinctively uneven profile of intelligence is a feature of the autistic spectrum. Within the spectrum, Asperger individuals differ from autistics in their early speech development and in being less likely to be characterized by visuospatial peaks. While different specific strengths characterize different autistic spectrum subgroups, all such peaks of ability have been interpreted as deficits: isolated, aberrant, and irreconcilable with real human intelligence. This view has recently been challenged by findings of autistic strengths in performance on Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM), an i

A cognitive and neurophysiological test of change from an individual's baseline.

OBJECTIVE: An automated cognitive neurophysiological test is presented that characterizes how an individual was affected by a drug or treatment. The test calculates sub-scores for working memory task performance, cortical activation, and alertness, and combines the sub-scores into an overall score. METHODS: The test was applied in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of alcohol, caffeine, diphenhydramine, and sleep deprivation in 16 healthy adults. RESULTS: The between- and within-day variability of the sub-scores and overall scores for placebo were all near zero, suggesting that the sco

Social-cognitive functioning and schizotypal characteristics.

The authors examined the relationship between social cognition and a feature of schizotypal personality referred to as magical ideation, defined broadly as the presence and intensity of illogical beliefs about causality and the nature of reality. The measures of social cognition used in this study were the Character Intention Task (CIT) and the adult version of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test. Regression analyses indicated that understanding of character intentions, as measured by CIT scores, and ability to identify emotions on the Eyes test were related to non-realistic beliefs. Princip

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors need both cardiological and neurological rehabilitation!

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Most survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) suffer from cardiologic symptoms and approximately half of them experience cognitive problems because of hypoxic brain damage. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are also common. This review aims to give an overview of recent literature on rehabilitation treatment aiming at improvement of quality of life after OHCA. RECENT FINDINGS: Existing cognitive screening tools are now validated for OHCA survivors. OHCA patients with cognitive deficits may have lower exercise capacity. Cardiac rehabilitation seems to be well tole

Reductions in PTSD symptom clusters among perinatal and postnatal survivors of intimate partner violence participating in the Heartbeats program.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a leading cause of injury among women, especially during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Experiencing IPV increases the risk of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD during the perinatal period is associated with poorer maternal mental health and adverse early child outcomes. Heartbeats (HB) is a hospital-based, community-linked violence intervention program designed to reduce morbidity and mortality among perinatal and postnatal survivors of IPV. HB provides crisis intervention, intensive case ma

Bias mitigation skills in diagnostic reasoning: utilizing a situated cognition approach.

PROBLEM: Diagnostic errors are common in healthcare and often stem from a failure to consider the social and contextual factors that influence clinician decision-making. Systemic inequities and clinician bias disproportionately contribute to diagnostic inaccuracies among marginalized communities. Medical schools are well-positioned to address this challenge by providing curricula that explore the impact of social context on diagnostic reasoning and equip students with strategies to mitigate harms associated with clinician bias. APPROACH: The authors developed a novel curriculum grounded in si

Individual Sleep Problems Are Associated With an Accelerated Decline in Multiple Cognitive Functions in Older Adults.

Poor sleep is a known risk factor of cognitive disorders, but the role of individual sleep problems in age-related cognitive changes remains unclear. This study used two complementary statistical models to estimate nonlinear trajectories of decline in four domains of cognitive functioning in the age period between 55 and 100 years depending on the severity of problems with falling asleep, night awakenings, and early morning awakenings, and short/long sleep duration. The sample included 5132 older adults (M = 67 years, 48% male) from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA), assessed 4-10
