The Walking Trail Making Test is more accurate than a Dual-Task Walking Test for screening the level of fall risk among community-dwelling older people.

BACKGROUND: Preventing falls is a major issue for older people. Aging leads to a decline in executive functions and functional capacities, increasing the risk of falling. Most cognitive-motor assessments are additional Dual-Tasks (DTs), open to prioritization strategies, leading to heterogeneous results in the screening of the level of fall risk. The Walking Trail Making Test (W-TMT) is an incorporated cognitive-motor task sensitive to detecting cognitive impairments. A high level of fall risk is generally associated with higher cognitive impairments. The objective of this study is to evaluate

Effects of intensive versus standard blood pressure control on domain-specific cognitive function: a substudy of the SPRINT randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Results from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) showed that intensive control of systolic blood pressure significantly reduced the occurrence of mild cognitive impairment, but not probable dementia. We investigated the effects of intensive lowering of systolic blood pressure on specific cognitive functions in a preplanned substudy of participants from SPRINT. METHODS: SPRINT was an open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial undertaken at 102 sites, including academic medical centres, Veterans Affairs medical centres, hospitals, and independent clinic

Brain-computer-interface-based intervention increases brain functional segregation in cognitively normal older adults.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based cognitive training systems have shown promise in enhancing cognitive performance in cognitively normal older adults. However, the brain network changes underlying these behavioural improvements remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated topological alterations in intrinsic brain functional networks following BCI-based training and their behavioural relevance in cognitively normal older adults using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theoretical analysis. Compared to a non-intervention waitlist (WL) group, the i

Social isolation mediates association between depressive symptoms and cognitive function: Evidence from China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and cognitive decline are common in older adults, but the direction of their relationship remains unclear. Social isolation is linked to both, and we hypothesized it mediates the connection between depressive symptoms and cognitive function. This study investigates whether social isolation mediates this relationship. METHODS: A total of 9220 participants aged ≥45 years were recruited from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale was used to assess the depressive symptoms. Social isolation was measured

Comparison of the Greek Version of the Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment Screen and Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination.

INTRODUCTION: Short cognitive screening instruments (CSIs) are widely used to stratify patients presenting with cognitive symptoms. The Quick Mild Cognitive Impairment (Qmci) screen is a new, brief (<5mins) CSI designed to identify mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which can be used across the spectrum of cognitive decline. Here we present the translation of the Qmci into Greek (Qmci-Gr) and its validation against the widely-used Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMSE). METHODS: Consecutive patients aged ≥55 years presenting with cognitive complaints were recruited from two outpatie

Intraindividual variability in neuropsychological performance predicts cognitive decline and death in HIV.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) occurs in a significant percentage of HIV-infected (HIV+) adults. Increased intraindividual variability (IIV) in cognitive function may be an early marker of emerging neurocognitive disorder, which suggests that IIV may be a sensitive measure of neurologic compromise in HIV. In the current study, we hypothesize that increased IIV may predict impending morbidity, including future cognitive decline and death. METHOD: In 708 HIV+ participants followed longitudinally for up to 14 years, we assessed the role of dispersion in forecasting deat
