Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Target Engagement of a Healthy Physical Activity Promotion Intervention for Bulimia Nervosa: Development and Evaluation via Case Series Design.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by a pattern of binge eating and compensatory behaviors as well as an overemphasis on body weight and shape in self-evaluation. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious, recent reviews suggest that only 30% of patients reach abstinence at posttreatment. One potential reason for these poor outcomes is that CBT fails to adequately reduce elevated negative affect (NA) and shape and weight concern, which have been shown to be correlated with poorer treatment outcomes in BN. Therefore, novel treatment components that focus on improving NA and

Behavioral assessments and differential excitability, oscillatory dynamics in dorsal and ventral hippocampal CA1 neurons in male rats of a prenatal VPA-exposed autism model.

The distinct electrophysiological properties of the dorsal (dHPC) and ventral (vHPC) hippocampus play crucial roles in cognitive and emotional processing. This study investigates the variations in firing activities between these hippocampal regions to develop targeted therapies for conditions such as autism. We conducted behavioral assessments and explored the properties of CA1 pyramidal neurons in the dHPC and vHPC using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in a prenatal Valproic Acid (VPA)-exposed autistic-like model. Additionally, oscillatory activities in the dHPC and vHPC were analyzed throu

mTOR inhibitor improves autistic-like behaviors related to Tsc2 haploinsufficiency but not following developmental status epilepticus.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a multi-system genetic disorder often associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is caused by mutations of TSC1 or TSC2, which lead to constitutive overactivation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). In several Tsc1+/- and Tsc2+/- animal models, cognitive and social behavior deficits were reversed by mTOR inhibitors. However, phase II studies have not shown amelioration of ASD and cognitive deficits in individuals with TSC during mTOR inhibitor therapy. We asked here if developmental epilepsy, common in the majority of individuals with TSC

PCC0208009, an indirect IDO1 inhibitor, alleviates neuropathic pain and co-morbidities by regulating synaptic plasticity of ACC and amygdala.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) has been linked to neuropathic pain and IDO1 inhibitors have been shown to reduce pain in animals. Some studies have indicated that IDO1 expression increased after neuropathic pain in hippocampus and spinal cord, whether these changes existing in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and amygdala remains obscure and how IDO1 inhibition leads to analgesia is largely unknown. Here, we evaluated the antinociceptive effect of PCC0208009, an indirect IDO1 inhibitor, on neuropathic pain and examined the related neurobiological mechanisms. EXPE

Neuropsychiatric adverse effects of centrally acting antiobesity drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Central neurochemical systems including the monoamine, opioid, and cannabinoid systems have been promising targets for antiobesity drugs that modify behavioral components of obesity. In addition to modulating eating behavior, centrally acting antiobesity drugs are also likely to alter emotional behavior and cognitive function due to the high expression of receptors for the neurochemical systems targeted by these drugs within the fronto-striatal and limbic circuitry. METHODS: This paper reviewed the neuropsychiatric adverse effects of past and current antiobesity drugs, with a ce

Heart rate variability profiles and exposure therapy treatment outcome in flight phobia.

The goal of this study was to explore why certain patients in a previous study on exposure therapy for flight phobia did not experience an improvement in their conditions. Participants from a treatment study (N = 45) were selected according to post-treatment results and divided into two groups: the unsatisfactory treatment outcome group (UTO, N = 10) and the satisfactory treatment outcome group (STO, N = 10). The differences between these two groups prior to receiving exposure therapy were analyzed at the behavioral, physiological, and cognitive levels. The UTO participants had been avoiding f

A technology-blended exercise intervention for cognitive risk reduction and brain health in middle-aged and older adults with type 2 diabetes in Singapore: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major modifiable risk factor for accelerated brain ageing, cognitive decline, and dementia. However, sustainable lifestyle interventions targeting cognitive health in at-risk older adult populations remain limited. This mixed-methods study evaluated the effects of a 12-week technology-blended Intensive Aerobic and Resistance Exercise Program (IAREP) on cognitive risk and related health outcomes among middle-aged and older adults with T2DM in a primary care setting in Singapore. METHODS: Participants were recruited from a community polyclinic an

Quality of life in children with psychiatric disorders and parental well-being: Effects of group CBT.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multidimensional construct encompassing physical, psychological, and social functioning. It is increasingly used as a universal outcome in evaluating interventions for children with psychiatric disorders. This study examined the effects of group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) on child HRQoL in naturalistic clinical settings and explored associations between child HRQoL and parental well-being dimensions using network analysis. The sample included 109 children with mixed psychiatric disorders. Of these, 56 were initially assigned to a waitlist co

A study on the effect of CBSM-based psychological intervention on self-management ability and quality of life in colorectal cancer patients from the perspective of benefit finding: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly prevalent malignant tumor in China. Patients often experience negative emotions due to disease- and treatment-related stress, which impairs their ability to self-manage the illness. Benefit finding (BF) can improve patients'quality of life through cognitive restructuring. Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) has been proven to exert positive intervention effects on breast cancer patients, but relevant research on its application in Chinese CRC patients and its impact on their BF, quality of life and self-management ability remains scarce

Providing Psychological Therapy Support and Improving Postdischarge Data Collection: Preliminary Evaluation of the "Paddle" App.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials of psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy typically show sustained posttreatment effects. However, less is known about individuals' outcomes following treatment in routine practice, and additionally, patient representatives have highlighted a need for better postdischarge support. OBJECTIVE: The "Paddle" app aims to address these issues. Paddle allows patients to store their therapy materials, reflect on sessions, and monitor their well-being during and after treatment, completing outcome questionnaires and monthly reviews. METHODS: Study 1 e

Parental involvement in cognitive behavioral group treatment for adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that parents of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often accommodate symptoms which may contribute to the maintenance and reinforcement of the disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is recommended as a first-line treatment for children and adolescents with OCD, and it is common practice to involve parents in the treatment. However, little is known about the experiences of parents involved in CBT. Therefore, this study aimed to explore parents’ experiences of being involved in their child’s OCD treatment through group CBT for ad

Addressing mental health with daily-life ecological momentary interventions (ALERT) in people at increased risk for mental disorders: A micro-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of mental distress are associated with increased risk for developing mental disorders. Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) constitute a scalable, low-barrier approach for early intervention. We conducted a micro-randomized trial to investigate the proximal (short-term) and distal (longer-term) effects of EMIs based on gratitude, savoring, cognitive restructuring, and acceptance. METHODS: 72 participants at-risk for developing mental disorders (mean age = 22.9, 67.6% female) completed a 16-day intervention phase during which they received four ecological momen

The power of context: Enhancing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation effects through skillful behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive neuromodulation techniques like repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have shown promise in treating psychopathology. However, emerging evidence suggests that the brain's functional state during stimulation may significantly influence treatment outcomes. Pairing neurostimulation with cognitively engaging tasks that activate targeted neural networks could enhance neuroplasticity and improve efficacy. Emotional dysregulation is a core feature of many psychiatric disorders. To explore whether combining behavioral interventions with neuromodulation enhances

Long-term effects of cognitive behavioural therapy on the quality of life in adult ADHD.

This study examined the long-term effects (4-8 years) of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), added to pharmacotherapy and psychoeducation (PE), on quality of life (QoL) in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Although previous findings showed no added QoL benefit of CBT immediately post-treatment, CBT provides skill-building and coping strategies that may yield delayed benefits in terms of ADHD-related functional impairments. We hypothesize that CBT will provide delayed treatment gains and thus results in higher QoL at follow-up or a slower decline in QoL over time. A

Self-help cognitive behavioural therapy for hot flushes and night sweats during androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer: the MANCAN2 randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) causes hot flushes and night sweats (HFNS) and is associated with sleep disturbance, anxiety, low mood and cognitive impairment. We tested self-help cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), when guided by prostate cancer nurse specialist teams, for mitigation of the long-term impact of HFNS, and associated symptoms. METHODS: Prostate cancer patients receiving ADT, with a HFNS Problem Rating Scale ≥2, were randomised (1:1) to treatment as usual (TAU) or CBT + TAU, stratified by centre and treatment intent. CBT was a 4-week self-help intervention with
