Position statement: The Society of Behavioral Medicine supports federal action to break the cycle of gun violence.

The United States continues to see significant issues with gun violence, resulting in significant public health concerns. Behavioral medicine is often involved in addressing the psychological aftermath of gun violence, as survivors experience higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicidal ideation. Black and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by gun violence due to structural inequities, with gun violence furthering the structural and health inequities experienced in these communities. While the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 helped to improv

Enhancing social and linguistic skills in children with autism: A semi-randomized controlled clinical trial of a virtual reality-based communicative rehabilitation programme.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, and conventional therapies often struggle to facilitate the generalization of these skills to real-world settings. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based communication rehabilitation intervention as a supplement to conventional treatment for improving the linguistic and social communication skills of Arabic-speaking Egyptian children with ASD. A clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed, wherein 60 children aged 4-6 years with m

Potentially inappropriate medications and anticholinergic and sedative burden in older patients with haemophilia or von Willebrand disease: The M'HEMORRH-AGE study.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: In older patients, multiple chronic conditions lead to the intake of multiple medications and a higher risk of adverse drug events. The exposure to inappropriate medications in older patients with bleeding disorders is poorly explored. The aim of this study was to describe the exposure to potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and medications with anticholinergic and sedative properties in older community-dwelling patients with haemophilia or von Willebrand Disease (VWD). METHODS: The M'HEMORRH-AGE study (Medication in AGEd patients with HAEMORRHagic disease

A Network Analysis of the Relationship Between Mental and Physical Health in Unsheltered Homeless Persons in Los Angeles County.

Homelessness is a public health crisis both nationally, in the United States, and internationally. Nevertheless, due to the hidden vulnerabilities of persons who are without shelter, little is known about their experiences during periods of homelessness. The present research adopts a network approach that conceptualizes how the major risk factors of homelessness interact, namely substance abuse problems, poor mental health, disability, and exposure to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. Our analysis draws on a large demographic survey of over 5,000 unsheltered homeless persons

Sleep problems in Australian children with Down syndrome: the need for greater awareness.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Non-respiratory sleep disorders also occur commonly but are less well recognised. This cross-sectional study evaluates the prevalence of sleep difficulties in a community sample of Australian children with DS (DScomm), using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), and compares them to children referred to the sleep clinic (DSref). To our knowledge this is the first study to have reported prevalence of sleep problems in Australian children with DS and to compare a community and refer

Same but different: 9-month-old infants at average and high risk for autism look at the same facial features but process them using different brain mechanisms.

The study examined whether 9-month-old infants at average vs. high risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) process facial features (eyes, mouth) differently and whether such differences are related to infants' social and communicative skills. Eye tracking and visual event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 35 infants (20 average-risk typical infants, 15 high-risk siblings of children with ASD) while they viewed photographs of a smiling unfamiliar female face. On 30% of the trials, the eyes or the mouth of that face was replaced with corresponding features from a different female. There

Communication impairments in mice lacking Shank1: reduced levels of ultrasonic vocalizations and scent marking behavior.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic component. Core symptoms are abnormal reciprocal social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior with restricted interests. Candidate genes for autism include the SHANK gene family, as mutations in SHANK2 and SHANK3 have been detected in several autistic individuals. SHANK genes code for a family of scaffolding proteins located in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. To test the hypothesis that a mutation in SHANK1 contributes to the symptoms of autism, w

Autism, language and communication in children with sex chromosome trisomies.

PURPOSE: Sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) are found on amniocentesis in 2.3-3.7 per 1000 same-sex births, yet there is a limited database on which to base a prognosis. Autism has been described in postnatally diagnosed cases of Klinefelter syndrome (XXY karyotype), but the prevalence in non-referred samples, and in other trisomies, is unclear. The authors recruited the largest sample including all three SCTs to be reported to date, including children identified on prenatal screening, to clarify this issue. DESIGN: Parents of children with a SCT were recruited either via prenatal screening or v

Lay perceptions of genetic risks attributable to inbreeding in Pakistan.

Pakistan along with many other West and South Asian countries has a very high prevalence of consanguineous, especially close cousin, marriages. Although there is substantial empirical information on offspring morbidity and mortality attributable to parental consanguinity, population-based information on how communities in general, and women in particular, perceive the health risks associated with consanguineous unions is limited. This paper considers community perceptions of health effects associated with consanguineous marriages using qualitative data from 15 focus group discussions and 294 i

The depressive spectrum: diagnostic classification and course.

The spectrum of depression is much wider than that reflected in the current diagnostic nomenclature. A large proportion of subjects with depression both in treatment and in the community fail to meet diagnostic criteria for either major depressive disorder (MDD) or dysthymia. Inclusion of subthreshold categories of depression dramatically improves the coverage of treated depression, particularly in community samples, and better enables the characterization of its longitudinal course. This paper investigates the application of diagnostic criteria for both threshold and subthreshold categories o

Developmental deviation in delay discounting as a transdiagnostic indicator of risk for child psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, delayed rewards is known as delay discounting (DD). Developmental deviations in DD may be key in characterizing psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Recent work empirically supported DD as a transdiagnostic process in various psychiatric disorders. Yet, there is a lack of research relating developmental changes in DD from mid-childhood to adolescence to psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Additionally, examining the interplay between socioeconomic status/total household income (THI) and psychiatric sy

From synapse to sheath: how OPCs couple neural activity to adaptive myelination and behavioral plasticity.

Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) are abundant progenitor cells in the central nervous system. Unlike mature oligodendrocytes, OPCs form functional synapses with neurons and respond to both glutamatergic and GABAergic signals. Glutamate activates calcium-permeable AMPA receptors on OPCs, generating local Ca2+ signals that regulate myelin sheath formation and stabilization. In parallel, GABAergic signaling modulates OPC proliferation and differentiation through both calcium-dependent and transcriptional mechanisms. Activity-dependent myelination driven by OPCs contributes directly to neura

"Structural and Metabolic Reprogramming by Docosahexaenoic Acid in Neuronal Cell Models of Alzheimer's Disease".

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) is the most abundant omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the mammalian brain and an essential structural component of neuronal membranes. Several research studies indicate that DHA plays critical roles in maintaining membrane lipid composition, synaptic integrity, mitochondrial function, and metabolic homeostasis, processes that are disrupted in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Because brain DHA availability depends largely on systemic metabolism and liver-brain communication, alterations in DHA homeostasis have been proposed

Beyond the nerve: Understanding cortical contributions to post-paralytic facial synkinesis.

Patients with post-paralytic facial synkinesis (PPFS) experience a diverse array of neuronal changes from aberrant peripheral neurogenesis to cortical changes. The aim of this review is to utilize a comprehensive search strategy to (1) identify studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate PPFS, and (2) synthesize the available evidence for any unifying structural and functional cortical changes which hold promise for future investigation. A search of Pubmed and Embase databases was conducted with a research librarian. Articles were then screened and reviewed independe

Nature-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (NELNs) for intracellular transport and targeted RNA delivery.

As exosomes serve as pivotal mediators of intercellular communication, research on exosomes has expanded markedly from its conventional focus on mammalian sources to the burgeoning field of nature-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (NELNs). Endowed with favorable biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and wide, readily accessible sources, NELNs have emerged as promising delivery vehicles to address long-standing bottlenecks in RNA-based therapeutic delivery. However, their clinical translation is significantly impeded by the lack of a consensus definition and standardized manufacturing workflow

Cytokine-mediated immune-to-brain signaling in neural circuit disorders.

Neuroinflammation has emerged as a fundamental driver of neural circuit dysfunctions across a spectrum of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Beyond classical neuroimmune pathologies, accumulating evidence indicates that systemic inflammatory states - including those elicited by infection, metabolic dysfunction, stress, or peripheral immune activation - induce profound and long-lasting alterations in brain development and function. Cytokines act as critical molecular mediators of this peripheral-to-central immune communication, precisely orchestrating microglial activation in a spati

Single-cell transcriptomic analysis reveals endothelial mitochondrial dysfunction and synaptic impairment underlying arsenic-induced hippocampal neurotoxicity in mice.

Although arsenic (As) exposure is a well- established neurotoxicant, the cellular heterogeneity and underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In the present study, scRNA-seq was performed on the hippocampi of mice exposed to 50 mg/L sodium arsenite (NaAsO₂) via drinking water for 12-weeks. Nine cell types were identified based on marker genes: namely Neuron, Oligodendrocyte, NSC, OPC, Microglia, Astrocyte, Fibroblast-like cells, Endothelial-cell and Pericyte. Among these endothelial cells exhibited the most pronounced transcriptomic alterations, characterized by mitochond
