Providing quality care to the sexual assault survivor: education and training for medical professionals.

Health care providers who perform sexual assault examinations can assist patients who report experiencing a sexual assault by increasing their knowledge and skills in sexual assault care, and serving as Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) coordinators, or as SART team members, in their communities. With little additional material, this training could be provided as a component of basic midwifery and/or advanced practice nursing education programs. This article reviews the essential steps and required training for conducting sexual assault examinations.

Vaccines for the prevention of neglected diseases--dengue fever.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever have spread to all tropical areas of the developing world, but still remain largely neglected diseases. Several promising vaccine candidates in the form of live attenuated and chimeric vaccines have been developed and are currently in human clinical trials. However, significant practical, logistic, and scientific challenges remain before these vaccines can widely and safely be applied to vulnerable populations. Vector control, community education and public health measures must be pursued in parallel with vaccine development.

[Mechanic-technological and metallographical studies on soldering of dental alloys].

It can be proved that the reliability of soldering is in practice not very high, as properties of solidity and the quality of compounds very greatly. This is unavoidable in spite of the most careful execution of the welding and observation of the corresponding soldering directions. Low sigmaB-values are attributable to: 1. the insufficient filling of the soldering space (ca. 80%); 2. many lacunae in the solder commissures, which partly communicate with one another; 3. small diffusion zones and poor wettability in case of the pairing of the materials Co-Cr-Mo/Au-solder.

Osteomalacia in the elderly.

Over recent years it has been demonstrated that there is a significant incidence of osteomalacia in elderly patients presenting with fractures of the femoral neck. The results of a survey carried out on all patients admitted to St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, with fractures of the upper end of the femur over a 12-month period are presented, and the condition of osteomalacia in the elderly is discussed. It is concluded that in this community osteomalacia does not present as a practical problem except in those patients who have the condition as a result of a definite predisposing factor.

Medical patch disposal practices and information sources: A pharmacy customer survey before and after an information initiative.

BACKGROUND: Promoting proper disposal of pharmaceuticals is among the most essential means to mitigate their environmental impacts. Several challenges prevent the proper disposal of medicines, such as a lack of guidance and difficulties in implementing the guidance. These issues are pronounced in the case of medical patch disposal, which is yet an unexplored subject in research. This study examined pharmacy customers' practices, information sources, and the impact of a national half-year-long information campaign regarding the proper disposal of medical patches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross

A Preliminary Evaluation of Daily and Momentary Variability in Parenting Practices During Adolescent Alcohol Use and Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with co-occurring alcohol use and mental health disorders have better treatment outcomes when caregivers are involved in their treatment. Currently, little is known about why caregiver involvement improves outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To facilitate caregiver-involved treatment process research, this study preliminarily examined within- and between-person variability in ecological momentary assessment (EMA) items assessing caregiver-child communication (eg, warmth, conflict), general (eg, monitoring, praise), and substance-specific parenting practices (eg, alcohol reactions an

A community-level complementary-food safety and hygiene intervention improves family-food preparation behaviours in rural Gambia: a follow-up of a cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diarrhoea causes millions of deaths annually in low-income countries. Prevention strategies minimising transmission of diarrhoeal pathogens could include adopting better food hygiene practices. The objective was to assess whether a complementary-food hygiene intervention improved family-food hygiene practices in rural Gambian households. METHODS: A parallel cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted in central Gambia. 30 villages were randomised within strata (north/south of the river, population quartiles) to intervention or control (1:1 ratio) by a UK statist

Provision of dementia-specific care in nursing homes in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) - analysis of person-centered practices and related problems within a holistic multiple case study.

BACKGROUND: To ensure high-quality care for residents living with dementia, recommendations for dementia-specific care do exist internationally as well as in Germany. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how dementia-specific care is currently provided and what can be derived from this for the improvement of dementia-specific care. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the provision of dementia-specific care and related problems in German nursing homes. METHODS: We used a holistic multiple case design with a total of four cases. The cases were defined as care units in which residents living

Factors influencing adoption of self-monitoring of blood pressure among hypertensive patients in primary healthcare in Vietnam: a cross-sectional facility-based study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is an increasing health problem in low- and middle-income countries such as Vietnam. Self-monitoring of blood pressure (SMBP) is a crucial component of hypertension management in primary healthcare (PHC) and stimulated by healthcare providers. Yet, its adoption remains suboptimal. This study examines the application and contributing factors to adoption of SMBP among hypertensive patients in a PHC setting in Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 989 hypertensive patients managed at commune health stations (CHSs), part of PHC, in two provinces in

What do physiotherapists find useful in e-learning interventions to improve their knowledge, attitudes and beliefs on low back pain management: a nested qualitative study from an educational randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapists encounter many barriers in their management of low back pain (LBP). However, little attention has been paid to what content physiotherapists find useful to improve their LBP management. We aimed to: (1) explore the experiences of physiotherapists regarding the educational content after completing either an "experimental" or "traditional" e-learning intervention, (2) identify in both interventions which content physiotherapists reported beneficial or lacking in order to enhance their management of LBP. METHODS: A purposive, criterion-based sampling strategy was emp

Perception and experiences of adolescent mothers and communities in caring for their preterm babies: findings from an in-depth study in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: A significant concern for Bangladesh is the high prevalence of adolescent pregnancy and the associated negative consequences for mother and baby, including a teen-related increased risk of preterm birth (PTB). Bangladesh also has one of the highest incidences of PTB (19%). Despite these high numbers of adolescent pregnancies and PTB, little is reported about the experiences of adolescent mothers in caring for their preterm babies, and the interventions needed to support them. The aim of this study was to explore gaps and opportunities for improved care for preterm babies among adol

Water treatment at the point-of-use and treatment preferences among households in Ethiopia: A contemporaneous systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Water is essential for maintaining human life, health, and dignity. Untreated water consumption causes 1.8 million deaths annually, over 99.8% of which happen in developing nations and 90% of which include children. Point-of-use water treatment enables people without reliable access to safe drinking water to reduce contamination and minimize microbial risk levels. This Systematic Review and Meta-analysis was, therefore, used to identify, select, and critically appraise relevant evidence about water treatment practices and their associated factors among Ethiopian households. Doctor-patient interaction in Finnish primary health care as perceived by first year medical students.

BACKGROUND: In Finland, public health care is the responsibility of primary health care centres, which render a wide range of community level preventive, curative and rehabilitative medical care. Since 1990's, medical studies have involved early familiarization of medical students with general practice from the beginning of the studies, as this pre-clinical familiarisation helps medical students understand patients as human beings, recognise the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and identify practicing general practitioners (GPs) as role models for their professional development. Trauma-informed practice for genetic counselors: Insights from a workshop evaluation.

Trauma-informed practice (TIP) is an emerging model of care that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and emphasizes both physical and psychological safety for consumer and provider. It is being increasingly integrated into models of healthcare delivery, organizational policies, and practices, and has been shown to improve clinical interactions, increase treatment adherence, and improve healthcare outcomes. However, to date, TIP has not yet been systematically integrated into genetic counseling training and practice. In this study, using the RISE2 Genomics reporting standard, we presen

Evaluation of a Novel Web-Based Active Learning Tool for Primary Care Physicians' Continuing Professional Development (The Community Fracture Capture Learning Hub): Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The lack of osteoporosis treatment initiation following fragility fractures is a recognized gap, particularly in primary care. Primary care physicians' (PCPs) barriers to treatment, such as uncertainties in investigation, initiation, and concerns about drug side effects, remain challenging. It is also unclear whether knowledge gaps and barriers vary by region or if active learning platforms are more effective than passive methods in improving treatment rates, and how PCP demographics influence learning outcomes. With time constraints, PCPs are increasingly using online platforms fo
