Prevalence and Patterns of Resuscitation-Associated Injury Detected by Head-to-Pelvis Computed Tomography After Successful Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation.

Background Patients resuscitated from out-of-hospital circulatory arrest (OHCA) frequently have cardiopulmonary resuscitation injuries identifiable by computed tomography, although the prevalence, types of injury, and effects on clinical outcomes are poorly characterized. Methods and Results We assessed the prevalence of resuscitation-associated injuries in a prospective, observational study of a head-to-pelvis sudden-death computed tomography scan within 6 hours of successful OHCA resuscitation. Primary outcomes included total injuries and time-critical injuries (such as organ laceration). Ex

Optimization of Lead Placement in the Right Ventricle During Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy. A Simulation Study.

Patients suffering from heart failure and left bundle branch block show electrical ventricular dyssynchrony causing an abnormal blood pumping. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is recommended for these patients. Patients with positive therapy response normally present QRS shortening and an increased left ventricle (LV) ejection fraction. However, around one third do not respond favorably. Therefore, optimal location of pacing leads, timing delays between leads and/or choosing related biomarkers is crucial to achieve the best possible degree of ventricular synchrony during CRT application

Formulation predictive dissolution (fPD) testing to advance oral drug product development: An introduction to the US FDA funded '21st Century BA/BE' project.

Over the past decade, formulation predictive dissolution (fPD) testing has gained increasing attention. Another mindset is pushed forward where scientists in our field are more confident to explore the in vivo behavior of an oral drug product by performing predictive in vitro dissolution studies. Similarly, there is an increasing interest in the application of modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) frameworks and high-performance computing platforms to study the local processes underlying absorption within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In that way, CFD and computing platforms both can in

Deriving causes of child mortality by re-analyzing national verbal autopsy data applying a standardized computer algorithm in Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana.

BACKGROUND: To accelerate progress toward the Millennium Development Goal 4, reliable information on causes of child mortality is critical. With more national verbal autopsy (VA) studies becoming available, how to improve consistency of national VA derived child causes of death should be considered for the purpose of global comparison. We aimed to adapt a standardized computer algorithm to re-analyze national child VA studies conducted in Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana recently, and compare our results with those derived from physician review to explore issues surrounding the application of the stan

Flapless surgery and immediately loaded implants: a retrospective comparison between implantation with and without computer-assisted planned surgical stent.

OBJECTIVES: Computer planned flapless surgery and immediate loading are the most recent topics in implantology. One new computer-planned implant system uses a three-dimensional parallelometer able to transfer the implant position from the virtual project to the master model. The aim of this study was to verify if the new medical device gives an advantage in term of implant failures and/or crestal bone remodeling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was planned to analyze a series of 193 immediately loaded fixtures inserted by means of flapless surgery. From those sixty six implants we

Computer reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of mouse cerebral ventricles.

In the brain, the cerebral ventricles are important as the site of cerebrospinal fluid production. The cerebral ventricles consist of the lateral ventricles, the third ventricle and the fourth ventricle, and their stereoscopic structures and the connections between them are not visible from outside of the brain. Observation of the stereoscopic structure of cerebral ventricles is possible by producing a mold preparation of the ventricular system [Systematic Human Anatomy (1984) 589; A Colour Atlas of Human Anatomy (1993) 79; J. Anat. 68 (1934) 480; Brain 75 (1952) 259]. However, this method doe

[Multiplane postmortem cerebral computed angiotomography--Part I. Normal anatomy of cerebral vessels on the axial plane (author's transl)].

Cranial computed tomography has been mainly used for detection of the parenchymal space-occupying lesion, and has had the limitation of detection of the cerebrovascular lesion itself because of low CT resolution. However, high resolution CT scanners have recently brought us the possibility of definition of fine cerebral vessels on CT images using an appropriate injection method of contrast agents (cerebral computed angiotomography). This paper concerns the normal anatomy of the cerebral vasculature on CT images using 9 fresh cadavers with normal intracranial structures. They received the postm

Characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing transcatheter mitral valve replacement with the Tendyne system.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) has emerged as alternative to transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) for treatment of mitral regurgitation (MR); however, the role of TMVR with the Tendyne system among established treatments of MR is not well defined. We assessed characteristics and outcomes of patients treated with the Tendyne system in the current clinical practice. METHODS: We reviewed patients who underwent cardiac computed tomography and were judged eligible for the Tendyne system. RESULTS: A total of 63 patients were eligible for TMVR with the Tendyne system.

Validation of a Low-Cost Portable Device for Inducing Noninvasive Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in Mice.

Noninvasive compression-induced anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL-R) is an easy and reproducible model for studying post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in mice. However, equipment typically used for ACL-R is expensive, immobile, and not available to all researchers. In this study, we compared PTOA progression in mice injured with a low-cost custom ACL-rupture device (CARD) to mice injured with a standard system (ElectroForce 3200). We quantified anterior-posterior (AP) joint laxity immediately following injury, epiphyseal trabecular bone microstructure, and osteophyte volume at 2 and 6

Balancing Accuracy and Precision: Optimal b-Values for Diffusion Tensor Imaging along the Perivascular Space.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The glymphatic system facilitates perivascular clearance, and its dysfunction has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. Diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) has been proposed as an indirect approach to assess glymphatic function, but its reliability is debated. The choice of b-value is an aspect of possible improvement. While a b-value of 1000 seconds/mm2 is commonly used, the optimal b-value for DTI-ALPS remains unknown. This study aims to determine the optimal b-value for DTI-ALPS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Simulations were conducted

Real-Time Model-Free Adaptive Dual Control in Closed-Loop Deep Brain Stimulation: A Path to Individualized Parkinson's Treatment.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an advanced clinical treatment for suppressing tremors in Parkinsonian patients. However, traditional open-loop DBS systems remain unable to adapt to patient-specific neural dynamics, often leading to suboptimal results. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel closed-loop DBS scheme based on a data-driven model-free adaptive control (MFAC) strategy, designed to effectively suppress pathological tremors hindering overstimulation and providing less power consumption. Using the basal ganglia (BG) system dynamics which is assumed to be completely u

Neurological complications in COVID-19 - a diagnostic challenge.

With the exponential growth of COVID-19 cases, the neurological complications reported during or after the infection became more common. There is limited knowledge regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms that are responsible for these complications. Recent data provides compelling evidence for the neurotropic nature of SARS-CoV-2, based on neurological manifestations reported during the current pandemic, as well as on previous experience with other coronaviruses. We present the case of a patient who developed headaches, motor deficit and dysphasia after respiratory COVID-19. Imaging tests
