Comparison of serum protein profiles between major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorders that are difficult to distinguish, as their diagnosis is based on behavioural observations and subjective symptoms. Quantitative protein profile analysis might help to objectively distinguish between these disorders and increase our understanding of their pathophysiology. Thus, this study was conducted to compare the peripheral protein profiles between the two disorders. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 18 subjects with major depressive disorder and 15 subjects with bipola

Cardiac conduction disturbances in rheumatologic disease: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular abnormalities are common in patients with rheumatologic disorders. Tachy-arrhythmias occur more frequently in these patients than the general population; however, the prevalence of bradyarrhythmias in this group is less clear. This investigation aimed to analyze the incidence and predictors of bradyarrhythmias and conduction disturbances, as well as the presence and influence of cardiologist management, in patients with rheumatologic disorders. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 57 consecutive patients with rheumatologic conditions evaluated at a

Characterizing Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder: Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and the Spectrum of Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are conceptualized as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) as the most severe. Many find it more difficult to characterize behavioral and cognitive effects of exposure on the central nervous system when physical signs are not present. In the current study, an operational definition of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) was examined to determine its usefulness in discrimination of children classified as ARND based on behavior (ARND/B) and cognition (ARND/C) from children in 4 contrast groups

Use, costs, and predictors of psychiatric healthcare services following an autism spectrum diagnosis: Population-based cohort study.

A number of cross-sectional studies report extensive use of psychiatric services and high healthcare costs in autistic youths. However, little is known about how the use of these services evolves from the time of diagnosis, as children grow up. Our objectives were to investigate the use, costs, and predictors of psychiatric services following autism spectrum diagnosis. We built a cohort of 1227 newly diagnosed autism spectrum individuals identified in the Quebec (Canada) Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec administrative database (January 1998 to December 2010). Mean number and cost per ind

Personality traits as prospective predictors of suicide attempts.

OBJECTIVE: To examine higher order personality factors of negative affectivity (NA) and disinhibition (DIS), as well as lower order facets of impulsivity, as prospective predictors of suicide attempts in a predominantly personality disordered sample. METHOD: Data were analyzed from 701 participants of the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study with available follow-up data for up to 7 years. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses was used to examine NA and DIS, and facets of impulsivity (e.g. urgency, lack of perseverance, lack of premeditation and sensation seeking), as

Children and Young Adults with Epilepsy Exhibit an Interictal Autonomic Dysfunction: A Prospective Exploratory Study.

Dysautonomic disorders are an increasingly studied group of conditions, either as isolated diseases or associated with other neurological disorders. There is growing interest in understanding how dysautonomia affects people with epilepsy, who may report autonomic symptoms before, during and after seizures. Furthermore, autonomic abnormalities appear to play a role in sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, likely contributing to the increased mortality rate described in epilepsy. To better understand the association between epilepsy and dysautonomia, we explored electrochemical skin conductance i

Factor analysis of the eating disorder diagnostic scale in individuals with bipolar disorder.

PURPOSE: To examine the potential factor structure of the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) in a sample of individuals with bipolar disorder. METHOD: Exploratory common factor analyses were conducted in a sample of 1031 people with bipolar disorder as defined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR. RESULTS: Approximately 27% of participants had a comorbid eating disorder. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 3 factor solution (i.e., shape/weight concerns; binge eating behaviors, compensatory behavior). CONCLUSIONS: The 3-factor solution of the EDDS in a bipolar disorder s

Coding and noncoding gene expression biomarkers in mood disorders and schizophrenia.

Mood disorders and schizophrenia are common and complex disorders with consistent evidence of genetic and environmental influences on predisposition. It is generally believed that the consequences of disease, gene expression, and allelic heterogeneity may be partly the explanation for the variability observed in treatment response. Correspondingly, while effective treatments are available for some patients, approximately half of the patients fail to respond to current neuropsychiatric treatments. A number of peripheral gene expression studies have been conducted to understand these brain-based

Effectiveness of brain-computer interface interventions in autism spectrum disorder rehabilitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by impairments in social interaction, communication and the presence of repetitive behaviours. Recent advancements in brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies have demonstrated potential benefits in enhancing cognitive, social and communication skills in individuals with ASD. However, the effectiveness of BCI-based interventions in ASD rehabilitation remains inconsistent across studies. Therefore, this protocol outlines a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesise the evidence on the effectiven

The Evolving ADHD Phenotype in the Externalizing Context.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental precursor for future conduct and other externalizing problems. Despite its familiarity, research in the past decade suggests that refining the ADHD phenotype will yield dividends for clinical prediction and treatment specification as well as mechanistic discovery and theory. ADHD is a useful category, yet it comprises multiple constitutive traits requiring further specification. The field is now poised to shift to a useful integration of novel dimensional traits into a refined ADHD phenotype. This shift will need to recognize t

Non-pharmacological interventions for opioid use disorder: protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) are increasingly recognized as essential adjuncts to alleviate symptoms and enhance compliance in opioid use disorder (OUD). Although clinical guidelines recommend specific NPI modalities, high-quality evidence regarding their comparative hierarchies and time-course dynamics remains limited. We plan to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to evaluate and rank the efficacy of diverse NPIs. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, and CINAHL will be searched without language restrictions. We will include randomi

Fielded Attention: Reframing ADHD Through a Relational Ontology of Context.

BACKGROUND: Since DSM-5, ADHD has been classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder, and this placement has often reinforced dominant models that emphasize neurobiological mechanisms-treating attention as an internal trait shaped by executive dysfunction or dopaminergic imbalance. While these frameworks offer valuable insights, they often marginalize the ecological, relational, and sociomaterial contexts in which attention arises or collapses. Context is too often treated as background rather than condition. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a field-based reconceptualization of attention: a relat

Scoping review of AI-driven wearable technologies for rehabilitation and functional assessment in Parkinson's disease: a protocol.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterised by high prevalence and disability rates, severely impairing patients' quality of life and imposing a substantial societal burden. Rehabilitation interventions are an essential component of PD management; however, conventional face-to-face rehabilitation is constrained by limited resources and poor adherence. In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with wearable technologies has offered new avenues for rehabilitation, enabling continuous monitoring, objective assessment and persona

Eating attitudes and behaviors characteristics in high-level Kenyan female and male distance runners.

BACKGROUND: East African middle- and long-distance runners have dominated international running events for decades. This success is likely derived from the combination of genetics, training, environment, lifestyle, and social factors. Physiological capacity and training regimes-histories have been reported extensively, however, research addressing lifestyle factors is relatively scant. Examination of eating behaviors and attitudes is based upon small sample sizes, and nutritional behaviors are compared and framed relative to European or Western country cohorts. METHODS: Therefore, we chose to

Pre-existing mental health disorders are associated with an increased risk of traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern with significant morbidity and mortality. Mental health disorders (MHDs) are known to arise after TBI. Conversely, we assessed the relationship between pre-existing MHDs and subsequent TBI risk. METHOD: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using Epic Cosmos, an electronic health record database representing >250 healthcare organisations and >300 million patients. Adults with/without a MHD were included (01-01-2015 to 31-12-2023). MHDs were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision,
