The effect of PU/MWCNT nanofiber scaffolds containing hesperidin nanoparticles and mesenchymal stem cells on the microglia and astrocyte phenotype in the spinal cord injury model.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a neurodegenerative disease involving inflammation, microgliosis, and astrocytosis. This study examined how polyurethane/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PU/MWCNT) nanofiber scaffolds containing hesperidin nanoparticles (NPs) and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) affect the phenotype of microglia and astrocytes in an SCI model. Thirty-six male rats were divided into six groups: SCI, sham, scaffold, scaffold with AMSCs, scaffold with NPs, and scaffold with AMSCs and NPs. Motor performance in the hind limbs was evaluated using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnah

A model, mixed-species urinary catheter biofilm derived from spinal cord injury patients.

Complex multispecies biofilms consistently colonise urinary catheters, causing persistent asymptomatic bacteriuria and frequent symptomatic episodes in long-term catheterized individuals. Simple single-species models often fail to capture the complexities of mixed-species interactions and lab-based organisms may not reflect the genomic diversity found in real-world infections. Additionally, growth under flow conditions promotes robust, complex-biofilm structures. Therefore, to reflect the dynamics of in vivo infections, biofilm samples from clinical indwelling catheters of spinal cord injury (

Neurophysiology of Micturition: a Narrative Review on Preventing Mismanagement.

INTRODUCTION: The insidious interrelation between three key factors underscores the critical need to understand the neural control of the lower urinary tract (LUT): the complexity of its functioning, the epidemiology of conditions that can disrupt it, and the nonspecific presentation of related symptoms. This paper examines the importance of understanding neurophysiology of micturition to prevent mismanagement and reduce unnecessary procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review focuses on the neurophysiology of the micturition cycle, the epidemiology of major health conditions that affect it,

Factors influencing feasibility of patient use of a novel skin inspection device.

CONTEXT: Pressure injuries remain highly prevalent in the spinal cord injury and Disorder (SCI/D) population, despite evidence that supports preventive behaviors such as daily self-skin inspection. Long-handled mirrors are issued as standard of care in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) but are of little utility when the patient has impaired mobility. VHA researchers sought to test a skin inspection tool (now known as the Habit Camera™) which has features intended to overcome the need for excessive trunk rotation and excellent coordination. Pictures can be captured, edited, and uploaded

Weekend admission for cervical spinal cord injury associated with shorter length of stay at private non-profit centers.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed if weekend versus weekday admission for cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) influenced medical comorbidities, length of stay, and mortality while also exploring the role of hospital-specific factors. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (2015-2020) was queried for patients with CSCI. Propensity score matching (PSM) controlled for age, gender, hospital region, and illness severity, matching weekend admissions in a 1:1 ratio with weekday admissions. Parametric statistical tests then compared clinical and hospital-specific factors. RESULTS: 5036 patients were analyzed (m

Current Practices for Preventing Inguinal Hernia During Radical Prostatectomy: Findings From the "Anatomy on the Border" Consensus Survey by the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernia (IH) occurs relatively frequently after radical prostatectomy (RP) and can impair patients' quality of life. In recent years, most RPs in Japan have been performed robotically; however, strategies for preventing postoperative IH remain diverse and are not clearly defined. METHODS: In July 2024, the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery conducted an anonymous, web-based survey of 114 members of the Japanese Urological Association to assess intraoperative IH prevention practices during RP. Twenty-seven urologists responded (response rate: 24%), providing information o

Common sleep characteristics and the risk of common perinatal complications and adverse outcomes: a multi-sample, bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Improving maternal and child health has been a global priority since the early 2000s, with a focus on reducing perinatal complications and improving overall maternal well-being. Sleep characteristics influence various health outcomes, yet their role in perinatal complications and adverse outcomes remains poorly understood. METHODS: A Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted, using seven common sleep characteristics (sleeplessness, sleep duration, getting up in the morning, daytime napping, morning/evening person, narcolepsy, snoring) as exposure factors and twelve common per

Beyond surgical radicality in intramedullary spinal cord metastases: neurological function and systemic disease burden drive patient outcomes.

PURPOSE: Intramedullary spinal cord metastases (ISCM) are rare, clinically challenging lesions with limited evidence-based guidance. Optimal surgical management remains controversial, particularly regarding the ideal extent of resection (EOR) and associated prognostic factors. This study systematically evaluates perioperative outcomes, neurological function, and short-term survival according to biopsy-only, subtotal, or gross total resection (GTR) approaches. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 16 patients treated surgically for histologically confirmed ISCM between 2015

Preconditioning of MSCs for Acute Neurological Conditions: From Cellular to Functional Impact-A Systematic Review.

This systematic review aims to gather evidence on the mechanisms triggered by diverse preconditioning strategies for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their impact on their potential to treat ischemic and traumatic injuries affecting the nervous system. The 52 studies included in this review report nine different types of preconditioning, namely, manipulation of oxygen pressure, exposure to chemical substances, lesion mediators or inflammatory factors, usage of ultrasound, magnetic fields or biomechanical forces, and culture in scaffolds or 3D cultures. All these preconditioning strategies wer

Nose-to-brain delivery of stem cells in stroke: the role of extracellular vesicles.

Stem cell transplantation offers a promising therapy that can be administered days, weeks, or months after a stroke. We recognize 2 major mitigating factors that remain unresolved in cell therapy for stroke, notably: (1) well-defined donor stem cells and (2) mechanism of action. To this end, we advance the use of ProtheraCytes, a population of non-adherent CD34+ cells derived from human peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood, which have been processed under good manufacturing practice, with testing completed in a phase 2 clinical trial in post-acute myocardial infarction (NCT02669810). Spontaneous Spinal Subdural Hematoma Associated With Rivaroxaban and Aspirin Use: A Report of a Rare Case.

A spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma (SSSH) is a rare but potentially deadly condition characterized by the presence of blood in the subdural space, commonly causing compression of the spinal cord and acute neurological deficits. Urgent surgical intervention with a decompressive laminectomy is warranted to avoid lasting deficits. The literature on this pathology is scarce, and the etiology is still poorly understood, although associations have been established with arteriovenous malformations, rupture of epidural vessels, and anticoagulant use, among others. This study presents the case of a

The Role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Microbiota-Gut-Brain Cross-Talk with a Focus on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by the gradual loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to progressive motor function decline. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment, and its increasing prevalence is linked to an aging population, improved diagnostics, heightened awareness, and changing lifestyles. In the gastrointestinal system, the gut microbiota plays a vital role in producing metabolites, neurotransmitters, and immune molecules. Short-chain fatty acids, of interest for their potential health benefits, are inf

Gestational diabetes mellitus: genetic factors, epigenetic alterations, and microbial composition.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic disorder, usually diagnosed during the third trimester of pregnancy that usually disappears after delivery. In GDM, the excess of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids results in foetuses large for gestational age. Hyperglycaemia and insulin resistance accelerate the metabolism, raising the oxygen demand, and creating chronic hypoxia and inflammation. Women who experienced GDM and their offspring are at risk of developing type-2 diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic or cardiovascular conditions later in life. Genetic factors may predis
