Depressive symptoms and aggression are common in patients with substance use disorder. Drug craving is one of the main drivers of drug-seeking behavior. This study aimed to explore the relationship between drug craving and aggression in methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) patients with and without depressive symptoms. Totally, 613 male patients with MAUD were recruited in this study. Patients with depressive symptoms were identified by the 13-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-13). Drug craving and aggression were assessed by the Desires for Drug Questionnaire (DDQ) and the Buss & Perry Aggre

The need to identify and improve access to evidence-based treatments for depressive disorders and other mental health problems is a public health priority, particularly in relation to racial/ethnic minorities and other underserved groups. One hundred forty-six Mexican American primary care patients who met diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, or depressive disorder not otherwise specified (NOS) were offered eight sessions of an evidence-based behavioral treatment, problem-solving treatment for primary care (PST-PC). Among participants who agreed to treatment (

We present a case of panic disorder induced by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in a patient with an organic mood disorder. The patient was a 62-year-old woman with mild mood swings and reduced motivation and volition caused by a traumatic brain injury after a traffic accident. She was maintained on carbamazepine (600 mg/day). When the COVID-19 outbreak occurred in Japan, she developed concerns regarding the illness and complained of multiple episodes of panic attacks. Further, her depressive symptoms worsened. Thus, vortioxetine was added to the ongoing CBZ treatment. Four weeks af

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether T. gondii seropositivity is associated with 12-month depressive, anxiety and alcohol use disorders and current depressive symptoms and whether inflammation, measured by C-reactive protein (CRP) level, explains these associations.
METHOD: Health 2000 study (BRIF8901), conducted in years 2000-2001, is based on a nationally representative sample of Finns aged 30 and above, with 7112 participants and 88.6% response rate. The comorbidity of anxiety/depression, or the co-occurrence of anxious and depressive symptoms is an heterogenous concept. There is comorbidity when a whole anxious syndrome and a whole depressive syndrome last during a period of life. The association of minor anxious and depressive disorders in a same patient during a certain period of time is the definition of mixed anxious and depressive disorder. The comorbidity of generalized anxiety disorder and dysthymia is more frequent than each of these two disorders separately considered. The interpretation of comorbidity needs cautiousness. The res

OBJECTIVE: To compare the course of depression during a 2-year period in adult outpatients (n = 626) with current major depression, dysthymia, and either both current disorders ("double depression") or depressive symptoms with no current depressive disorder.
METHODS: Depressed patients visiting 523 clinicians (mental health specialists and general medical providers) were identified using a two-stage screening procedure including the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. The course of depression was assessed in 2 follow-up years with a structured telephone interview based on the format of the Diagnos

BACKGROUND: Functional impairment scales are increasingly used to evaluate subjects with a variety of mental disorders.
METHODS: We evaluated the work, social, and family disabilities of 228 subjects with 6 common anxiety and depressive disorders, as assessed by the Sheehan Disability Scale (major depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and mixed anxiety and depression).
RESULTS: Subjects in the 6 diagnostic groups had significantly higher work, social, and family disability scores than control subjects, with the exception of th

Long lasting, low intensity depressive episodes have been diversely integrated according to the classifications types or the psychodynamic points of view. The concept of anxious persistent lasting depression, neurotic depressive states, neurotic depression have been unified into the dysthymic disorder category of the DSM classification. This concept unification have been a topic of dispute considering that dysthymic disorder was a restrictive, heterogeneous an extensively comorbid diagnosis. Nevertheless the definition of this category offers the opportunity to place the notions of temperament

OBJECTIVE: To examine psychiatric comorbidity and factors that influence the outcome of bulimia nervosa (BN) in the general population.
METHOD: Women from the nationwide birth cohorts of Finnish twins were screened for lifetime BN (N = 59) by using questionnaires and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. We assessed psychiatric comorbidity and other prognostic factors.
RESULTS: Among women with lifetime BN, the following were more common than among unaffected women: current major depressive disorder (p = 0.004), lifetime major depressive disorder (p = 0.00001) and heavy drinking (p =

Bipolar mood disorder (manic-depressive illness) has many artistic references, especially in the painting domain, depicting moods and associated features. The title of some paintings directly refers to the psychopathological state of the disorder. There are a great number of painting masterpieces showing the depressive pole of manic-depressive illness. In some paintings bearing the title Melancholia, some admixture of the opposite manic pole can be traced, the phenomenon named today as "mixed depressive state". On the other hand, a painting depicting a pure manic pole, as an element of bipolar

Fifty-one inpatients affected by a major depressive episode were divided into four groups according to mood disorder diagnosis and previous clinical history (bipolar disorder type I; bipolar disorder type II; major depressive disorder with at least three previous depressive episodes; and single depressive episode patients) and administered three consecutive total sleep deprivation (TSD) cycles. Mood changes were rated with a reduced version of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and with self-administered visual analogue scales. TSD caused better clinical effects in bipolar and single-episode

RATIONALE: It is known that both selective serotonin and serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SSRI, SNRI) are first-line drugs for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It has also been considered that both SSRI and SNRI can improve the symptoms of major depressive disorder by increasing the concentration of monoamine in the synaptic cleft based on the monoamine hypothesis. However, accumulating evidence has indicated that inflammation in the brain may be a key factor in the pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie the development of major depressive disorder.
OBJECTIVES: It

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate functional impairment in a group of patients with bipolar disorder in remission and to determine the extent of relationships between overall functioning and current depressive, manic and panic spectrum symptoms.
METHOD: A subset of the patient population at the Pittsburgh site of the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program in Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD) study was evaluated in this study. The subsample comprises 103 male and female subjects with bipolar I disorder (n = 70), bipolar II disorder (n = 24), schizoaffective disorder - bipolar ty

Major depressive disorder is heritable and a leading cause of disability. Cognitive behavior therapy is an effective treatment for major depression. By quantifying genetic risk scores based on common genetic variants, the aim of this report was to explore the utility of psychiatric and cognitive trait genetic risk scores, for predicting the response of 894 adults with major depressive disorder to cognitive behavior therapy. The participants were recruited in a psychiatric setting, and the primary outcome score was measured using the Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale-Self Rated. Single-

Any type of sexual dysfunction is an important problem in half of the patients with depressive disorder. On the other hand, one to a quarter of people without any depressive disorder experience sexual dysfunction. Antidepressant agents can lead to all types of sexual side effects including arousal, libido, orgasm and ejaculation problems. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a widely used class of drugs which are prescribed for the treatment of a variety of disorders, including major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorde
