A review and agenda for integrated disease models including social and behavioural factors.

Social and behavioural factors are critical to the emergence, spread and containment of human disease, and are key determinants of the course, duration and outcomes of disease outbreaks. Recent epidemics of Ebola in West Africa and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) globally have reinforced the importance of developing infectious disease models that better integrate social and behavioural dynamics and theories. Meanwhile, the growth in capacity, coordination and prioritization of social science research and of risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) practice within the current pand

Impact of the Ebola outbreak on Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection medical activities in coastal Guinea, 2014-2015: A retrospective analysis from the Guinean national Human African Trypanosomiasis control program.

BACKGROUND: The 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak massively hit Guinea. The coastal districts of Boffa, Dubreka and Forecariah, three major foci of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), were particularly affected. We aimed to assess the impact of this epidemic on sleeping sickness screening and caring activities. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used preexisting data from the Guinean sleeping sickness control program, collected between 2012 and 2015. We described monthly: the number of persons (i) screened actively; (ii) or passively; (iii) treated for HAT; (iv) attending post-treatment follow-up vis

Varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox) infection in pregnancy.

Congenital varicella syndrome, maternal varicella-zoster virus pneumonia and neonatal varicella infection are associated with serious fetomaternal morbidity and, not infrequently, mortality. Vaccination against varicella-zoster virus can prevent the disease, and outbreak control limits the exposure of pregnant women to the infectious agent. Maternal varicella-zoster immunoglobulin administration before rash development, with or without antiviral medication, can modify the progression of the disease.

[Leptospirosis outbreak in calves from Corrientes Province, Argentina].

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease resulting in significant economic losses in livestock production. This disease causes abortion, embryo death, death of calves within the first few days of life and mastitis. We report a leptospirosis outbreak in calf growing and fattening. Histopathological and hemoparasite studies, immunofluorescence, and bacterial cultures were performed. A strain of Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona was isolated from samples collected from dead calves.

Crusted scabies.

Crusted scabies is a rare manifestation of scabies characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of mites in the skin. In immunocompromised patients, this infestation is characterized by crusted lesions. The occurrence of the disease in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients and the widespread use of immunosuppressive agents has led to a renewed interest in the disease. Early recognition and treatment is necessary to avoid an outbreak of scabies. This review highlights the pathogenesis, predisposing factors, clinical features and treatment of crusted scabies.

Impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on medical practice in endocrine and metabolic diseases in Japan: a nationwide surveillance study conducted by the Japan Endocrine Society.

We investigated the impact of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the management of endocrine and metabolic disorders in Japan. We conducted a cross-sectional nationwide questionnaire survey targeting board-certified endocrinologists under the auspices of the Japan Endocrine Society. The questionnaire consisted of multiple-choice questions and open-ended responses. Out of approximately 2,700 specialists, 528 (19.5%) opted to participate, suggesting a high level of interest in COVID-19 management among endocrinologists. The study found that almost half of participants had encoun

Evaluation of haematological, serum biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in cattle naturally infected with lumpy skin disease virus.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a vector-borne viral transboundary disease of cattle caused by the LSD virus (LSDV). Despite investigations on clinical and outbreak features of LSDV, information on disease pathogenesis and alternative changes in blood parameters are scarce. Keeping this in view, the current study was designed to determine haematological, serum biochemical, and oxidative stress parameters in naturally infected cattle with LSDV during the recent surge of outbreaks in Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 35 blood samples was collected from polymerase chain reaction-confirmed LSDV-infected ca

An Exploration of the Spatiotemporal and Demographic Patterns of Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic in West Africa Using Open Access Data Sources.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of exploratory analytical techniques using publically available data in informing interventions in case of infectious diseases outbreaks. More exactly spatiotemporal and multivariate methods were used to characterize the dynamics of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa, and propose plausible relationships with demographic/social risk factors. The analysis showed that there was significant spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal dependence in the evolution of the disease. For the first part of the epidemic, the cases were h

Global epidemiology of capsular group W meningococcal disease (1970-2015): Multifocal emergence and persistence of hypervirulent sequence type (ST)-11 clonal complex.

Following an outbreak in Mecca Saudi Arabia in 2000, meningococcal strains expressing capsular group W (W) emerged as a major cause of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) worldwide. The Saudi Arabian outbreak strain (Hajj clone) belonging to the ST-11 clonal complex (cc11) is similar to W cc11 causing occasional sporadic disease before 2000. Since 2000, W cc11 has caused large meningococcal disease epidemics in the African meningitis belt and endemic disease in South America, Europe and China. Traditional molecular epidemiologic typing suggested that a majority of current W cc11 burden repres

Challenges in controlling the Ebola outbreak in two prefectures in Guinea: why did communities continue to resist?

INTRODUCTION: The Ebola outbreak emerged in a remote corner of Guinea in December 2013, and spread into Liberia and Sierra Leone in the context of weak health systems. In this paper, we report on the main challenges faced by frontline health services and by communities including their perceptions and views on the current Ebola response in the Prefectures of Coyah and Forecariah in Guinea. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2014 using mixed approaches: (i) Desk review; (ii) Interviews; and (iii) Direct observation. RESULTS: Almost one year after the beginning of the Eb

Approved and experimental countermeasures against pestiviral diseases: Bovine viral diarrhea, classical swine fever and border disease.

The pestiviruses, bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), classical swine fever (CSFV) and border disease virus, are important livestock pathogens in many countries, but current vaccines do not completely prevent the spread of infection. Control of pestiviral diseases is especially difficult due to the constant viremia and viral shedding of persistently infected (PI) animals, which must be identified and eliminated to prevent disease transmission. Existing vaccines are limited by the delay between vaccination and the onset of protection, the difficulty of differentiating serologically between vacc

Verification of poultry carcass composting research through application during actual avian influenza outbreaks.

An avian influenza outbreak in 2002 affected 197 poultry farms in Virginia and cost an estimated $130 million in losses and cleanup. In 2004-2005, researchers initiated a project to investigate the feasibility and practicality of in-house composting of turkey mortalities (heavy hens and toms) as a method of disposal and disease containment. Occurrences of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) in West Virginia and Virginia in 2007 provided an opportunity for first responders to verify composting as an effective carcass disposal method. Many lessons learned from these experiences have led to imp

An assistant ship surgeon's account of cholera at sea.

The diary of Thomas Graham, a naval ship surgeon, brings the voyage of HMS troopship Apollo in 1849 to life. A year after England's second great cholera outbreak, the pervasive fear of the disease became a reality onboard when cholera broke out. The intended voyage from England to China was diverted to South America where the ship was put into quarantine. So bad were the conditions onboard that the Times correspondent wrote: 'I have never seen a convict-ship in which the convicts were not more comfortably lodged'. Graham's writing provides an insightful record of life at sea in the mid-ninetee

[Typhoid fever: rise, peak and fall of an infectious disease in Chile].

This article presents the history of typhoid fever in Chile since its definition as a clinical entity until our days. From this history is evident the long lasting confusion with typhus (rickettsial spotted fever) in Chile although the identity and characteristics of typhoid fever had been established in the first half of nineteenth century in Europe. This confusion could be explained because some clinical features are similar in both diseases (high fever and delirium) and because of its occurrence in poor hygienic conditions. This misconception was resolved only during 1918 on occasion of a m

[Spatial-statistical analysis of infectious disease notification data in lower saxony].

BACKGROUND: In Lower Saxony the analysis of notification data according to the infection protection law is based on two pillars: one pillar is the weekly analysis to identify clusters and locally non-detectable outbreaks by an early warning system. The second pillar is an annual reporting system for obtaining an overall picture and for identifying long-term trends. In both fields methods of spatial statistics are applied. METHODS: For the 16 most frequent notifiable diseases, the notification data of the districts of Lower Saxony are analysed and presented on the Internet. The presentation st

Detection and molecular characterization of bovine enterovirus E2 from dairy calves with respiratory disease in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China.

INTRODUCTION: Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is a contagious viral agent that can cause respiratory infections and disease outbreaks among calves. This study reports an outbreak that occurred in a population of dairy calves in northern Xinjiang in November 2024. METHODS: Nasal swab samples were collected from 58 clinically symptomatic calves and analyzed for some bovine respiratory viruses using RT-PCR and viral metagenomic sequencing. RESULTS: Viral metagenomic analysis annotated only one bovine pathogen, BEV, in respiratory disease samples. RT-PCR further confirmed that BEV was detected in all n

Early Detection of Asymptomatic Human Infections in Vector-Borne Diseases: A Programmatic Model for Enhanced Surveillance.

Global control strategies for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) remain largely anchored in the detection and management of symptomatic cases, despite substantial evidence that a considerable proportion of infections-often exceeding 60% in several major arboviral diseases-are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. These asymptomatic human reservoirs can sustain low-level pathogen circulation during interepidemic periods and may amplify transmission once ecological, immunological, or entomological thresholds are crossed. Because vector-dependent transmission is shaped by environmental variability, ve

Identification and characterization of Vibrio anguillarum (GA strain) isolated from Obscure Pufferfish Takifugu obscurus.

OBJECTIVE: Aquaculture has faced significant challenges due to the emergence of various pathogens affecting fish species. One such species, the Obscure Pufferfish Takifugu obscurus, has experienced high mortality rates due to an outbreak of disease on a fishery farm in Shanghai. METHODS: The pathogen responsible for this outbreak was isolated and identified as Vibrio anguillarum (GA strain) using a combination of morphological, biochemical, and whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism-based phylogenetic analyses. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that the GA strain could cause disease in healt

Prison connectivity and disease transmission to neighboring communities: The role of prison staff.

Using smartphone location data and a novel application of publicly available employment data, we map how California communities are connected to nearby prisons through the movement of prison staff, and we measure the role these connections play in spreading infectious diseases. Leveraging an exogenous prisoner transfer-induced COVID-19 outbreak at San Quentin state prison in June 2020 as a quasiexperiment, we examine the unidirectional spread of the disease from the prison to surrounding communities. This outbreak was unique: its origin from outside Northern California was clearly documented a
