Study of the effect of lactational bone loss on blood lead concentrations in humans.

Lactation and other clinical states of high bone turnover have been suggested to release lead (Pb) stored in bone into blood and tissues. Previous observations on the influences of lactation have been anecdotal, or at high blood Pb concentrations with varying past exposures, or complicated by postpartum fluid changes. A prospective observational study was performed to investigate possible changes in blood lead concentrations at multiple intervals during lactation for 6 months postpartum and to relate changes in blood lead concentrations to changes in bone density and other variables. Exercise modality and subsequent musculoskeletal medical expenditures among middle-aged and older adults: A population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) contribute substantially to pain, disability, and health care spending in aging populations. Although physical activity has been associated with lower health care costs, less is known about whether medical expenditures differ by exercise modality. This study examined whether musculoskeletal medical expenditures differed between non-exercisers, unsupervised exercisers, and supervised exercisers among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: Using Korea Health Panel data from 2019 to 2023, we examined the association between exercise modality

Parental income in childhood and health outcomes across age groups: a register-based study from Norway.

BACKGROUND: Parental socioeconomic status is associated with health outcomes across age. However, the specific age-, gender-, and disease-related patterns linking parental income during early childhood to healthcare utilization across age remain poorly characterized. Enhanced understanding of these associations is essential to inform targeted interventions and improve health equity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed primary care consultations for all Norwegian residents aged 10-59 in 2018 (N = 2,882,669), merged with parental income records from 1958 up until 2017. The analysis was

Association between duration of hearing-aid use and frailty in community-dwelling older adults with hearing loss in Japan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is prevalent among older adults with hearing loss. —a condition potentially triggering social isolation, communication difficulties, and reduced participation in physical and social activities, which in turn may accelerate the development of frailty. Hearing aids help mitigate these consequences by improving communication and social engagement. However, the relationship between duration of hearing-aid use and frailty is unclear. This study examined the above-mentioned relationship in older adults with hearing loss. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between Jun

The Fiscal Impact of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act for ESRD.

KEY POINTS: The Medicare Secondary Payer Act modestly reduced federal dialysis spending when accounting for the effect on forgone tax revenue. The policy saved money only when private prices were <3.05 times Medicare rates. Medicare assuming primary payer status for all dialysis care would have saved the government $1 billion annually. BACKGROUND: The Medicare Secondary Payer Act (MSPA) requires that employer group health plans serve as the primary payer for individuals with ESRD for 30 months, with Medicare serving as the secondary payer. After 30 months, Medicare becomes the primary payer.
