Culturally and linguistically appropriate vaccine education (CLAVE) for Indigenous communities: design and implementation study of a community-based approach to digital vaccine education in the Central Highlands of Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: In Guatemala, childhood vaccination rates, particularly in Indigenous communities, are low due to inaccessible information and mistrust. Using a human-centered design (HCD) process with community partners, we developed CLAVE (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Vaccine Education), a video series on routine and human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization in Kaqchikel, K’iche’, and Spanish. Content was distributed via social media and through community health workers (CHWs). This study describes the instructional design process and assesses implementation feasibility through commun

Effect of Customized Oral Health Awareness Program on Knowledge and Practice of Oral Hygiene Maintenance Among Institutionalized Visually Impaired Individuals of Lucknow: A Cluster Randomized Study.

BACKGROUND: Visually impaired individuals face significant challenges in maintaining oral hygiene due to reliance on visual cues. Conventional oral health education (OHE) often fails to address their needs, leading to disparities in oral health outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effectiveness of three customized oral health education strategies-Audio only (Group 1), Audio + Braille (Group 2), and Audio + Tactile Model (Group 3)-on oral health Knowledge, Attitude, Practice (KAP), and clinical oral hygiene status among institutionalized visually impaired individuals in

Evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of a co-designed physical activity intervention for rural middle schoolers: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Lack of physical activity is a concern for children across diverse backgrounds, particularly affecting those in rural areas who face distinct challenges compared to their urban counterparts. Community-derived interventions are needed that consider the unique context and additional physical activity barriers in under-resourced rural settings. Therefore, a prospective pre-post pilot/feasibility study of Hoosier Sport was conducted over 8-weeks with 6th and 7th grade children in a low-socioeconomic rural middle school setting. The primary objective of the present study was to assess t

Outcomes of Cooking Matters for Diabetes: A 6-week Randomized, Controlled Cooking and Diabetes Self-Management Education Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management education and support is the cornerstone of diabetes care, yet only 1 in 2 adults with diabetes attain hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) targets. Food insecurity makes diabetes management and HbA1c control more difficult. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to test whether a cooking intervention with food provision and diabetes self-management education and support improves HbA1c and diabetes management. DESIGN: This was a waitlist-controlled, randomized trial. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Participants were 48 adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. INTERVENTION: Cooking Matters for D

Social Cognition and Behavioral Assessments Improve the Diagnosis of Behavioral Variant of Frontotemporal Dementia in Older Peruvians With Low Educational Levels.

Background: The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), characterized by early behavioral abnormalities and late memory impairment, is a neurodegenerative disorder with a detrimental impact on patients and their caregivers. bvFTD is often difficult to distinguish from other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), using brief cognitive tests. Combining brief socio-cognitive and behavioral evaluations with standard cognitive testing could better discriminate bvFTD from AD patients. We sought to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of brief socio-cognitive tests t

Access to institutional delivery services and its associated factors among mothers in Jimma Zone, Southwest Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Poor access to institutional delivery services has been known as a significant contributory factor to adverse maternal as well as newborn outcomes. Previous studies measured access in terms of utilization while it has different dimensions (geographic accessibility, availability, affordability, and acceptability) that requires to be measured separately. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the four dimensions of access and factors associated with each of these dimensions. METHODS: Community-based cross-sectional study design was used, employing both quantitative and qualit

Evaluating the Effect of a Web-Based E-Learning Tool for Health Professional Education on Clinical Vancomycin Use: Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Internet-based learning for health professional education is increasing. It offers advantages over traditional learning approaches, as it enables learning to be completed at a time convenient to the user and improves access where facilities are geographically disparate. We developed and implemented the Vancomycin Interactive (VI) e-learning tool to improve knowledge on the clinical use of the antibiotic vancomycin, which is commonly used for treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to evaluate the

Caretakers' barriers to pediatric antiretroviral therapy adherence in Vietnam - A qualitative and quantitative study.

BACKGROUND: Poor antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence leads to drug resistance and treatment failures. The options for second and third line ART regimens, particularly for pediatric patients, are very limited in low and middle-income countries. HIV-infected children are mostly passive drug-takers, thus caretakers play a very important role in assuring ART adherence. Pediatric ART adherence is still a challenging problem in Vietnam since non-adherence is the major risk factor for treatment failure. Our study explores and measures caretakers' barriers in order to improve pediatric ART adherenc

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection and associated risk factors among village health volunteers in rural communities of southern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections remain prevalent and constitute a public health problem in certain rural areas of Thailand. Village health volunteers (VHVs), who are members of a Thai healthcare alliance, function as key providers of health prevention measures, disease control, and health education and share national health promotion campaigns with community members. This study is aimed at evaluating the prevalence, intensity, and risk factors for intestinal parasitic infection in VHVs in order to design community awareness and health education campaigns for the target population.

Diet quality and related factors among Spanish female participants in breast cancer screening programs.

OBJECTIVE: A healthy diet is particularly important during menopause, a period in which the risk of a number of health problems increases. This study analyzed diet quality as measured by two indices, namely, the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) and the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED) index, which measures adherence to a Mediterranean diet, and examined the factors associated with lower diet quality. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study covering 3,564 women aged 45 to 68 years who underwent breast cancer screening at 7 centers (Corunna, Barcelona, Burgos, Palma de Mallorca, Pampl

Brief sexual histories and routine HIV/STD testing by medical providers.

Clinicians who routinely take patient sexual histories have the opportunity to assess patient risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and make appropriate recommendations for routine HIV/STD screenings. However, less than 40% of providers conduct sexual histories with patients, and many do not receive formal sexual history training in school. After partnering with a national professional organization of physicians, we trained 26 (US and US territory-based) practicing physicians (58% female; median age=48 years) regarding sexual history takin

Current smoking as a predictor of chronic musculoskeletal pain in young adult twins.

UNLABELLED: Chronic pain is common during adolescence and young adulthood and is associated with poor quality of life, depression, and functional disability. Recognizing that chronic pain has significant consequences, it is important to identify modifiable health behaviors that may place young adults at risk for chronic pain. This study examines associations between chronic musculoskeletal pain and smoking in young adult twins (n = 1,588, ages 18-30) participating in a statewide twin registry. Twins completed questionnaires assessing smoking, mood (anxiety, depressive symptoms, and stress), an

Managing pain after shingles: a nursing perspective.

Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the neuropathic pain syndrome that may develop following an attack of shingles. While for many the symptoms subside, there can be long-term pain problems for up to 40% of those affected with PHN, and for 3% of these, symptoms can be severe (Dworkin and Portenoy, 1996). Knowledge and understanding of the symptoms and various treatments and approaches available is important to enable nurses and patients to work together in partnership to achieve the best outcomes. Realizing that more than one approach may be needed can allow for treatments which are complementary

We report the results of a 5-year follow-up of the cognitive development of 19 survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, all of whom received 24 Gy cranial irradiation and a course of intrathecal methotrexate. Assessment was made before radiotherapy and annually thereafter. Cognitive impairment was found to be transient in children who did not manifest somnolence who were under 5 years at the time of treatment. Despite having normal IQs and normal CT scans, 9 of 18 survivors in continuous complete remission were having learning problems at school 5 years after diagnosis. Assessment of their i
