PURPOSE: Isolated coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus in adolescents are rare injuries with unique surgical challenges. Respect for the posterior blood supply, open physes, and need for direct visualization to achieve anatomic reduction are critical considerations in surgical fixation. This study presents a case series and a surgical approach used in treating these patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients aged 10-19 presenting to a single quaternary-care academic center from 2016 to 2023 with isolated capitellar and trochlear shear fractures was performed. Demographic d

Background: The distal biceps brachii tendon inserts proximally and posteriorly on the bicipital tuberosity of the radius and it is a forearm supinator but also contributes to flexion of the elbow. Chronic distal biceps tendon ruptures are relatively rare, often complicated by tendon and muscle retraction, and, therefore, their primary repair is difficult or impossible. The gold standard treatment of these chronic lesions is its anatomic reinsertion at the radial tuberosity after tendon reconstruction, using autograft or allograft tissue, but there is no agreement about the most appropriate su

The aim of the study was to compare closed and open reduction of displaced paediatric supracondylar humerus fractures with regard to long-term functional outcome and quality of life.In this retrospective study, 30 patients were examined with a displaced supracondylar humerus fracture (14 boys and 16 girls with a median age of 7 years [5-12 years]). The right elbow was affected in 8 cases (27%) and the left elbow in 22 cases (73%). According to the Gartland/Wilkins classification, there were 3× type IIA (10%), 8 × type IIB (27%), 18 × type III (60%) fractures (missing data n = 1 [3%]). All frac

BACKGROUND: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is the primary static stabilizer of the medial elbow between 30° and 130° of elbow flexion. Athletes participating in overhead throwing sports, such as baseball, have the highest rate of UCL injury. High-grade injuries often require surgical intervention.
INDICATIONS: Low-grade UCL injuries are typically treated nonoperatively; however, high-grade injuries can require surgical intervention for full healing and function to be achieved.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: A 5-cm incision is made from the medial epicondyle to the sublime tubercle to allow for

BACKGROUND: Humeral lateral condyle fractures are common pediatric elbow injuries, with Jakob type III representing the most severe form. While open reduction and internal fixation is the standard treatment, consensus is lacking on the optimal fixation method. Inadequate fixation can lead to serious complications. The efficacy of absorbable internal fixation materials remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of different internal fixation materials for treating these fractures in children.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 51 children (39 male, 12 female; mean

BACKGROUND: Lateral elbow pain affects 1% to 3% of the general population. Neuropathy involving the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) is a potential cause of lateral elbow pain but shares overlapping symptoms with other pathologies, particularly lateral epicondylitis, which may be difficult to distinguish based solely on patient history, physical examination, or electrodiagnostic testing (EDX). Conventional magnetic resonance imaging may reveal denervation edema or atrophy in PIN-innervated muscles, but abnormal signal intensity within the nerve may not be apparent.

BACKGROUND: The ideal treatment of terrble triad injuries and whether fixation of coronoid process fractures is needed or not are still debated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate if terrible triad injuries necessitate coronoid fracture fixation and evaluate if non-fixation treatments have similar efficacies and outcomes as fixation-treatments in cases of terrible triad injuries.
METHODS: From August 2011 to July 2020, 23 patients with acute terrible triad injuries without involvement of the anteromedial facet of the coronoid process were included to evaluate the postoperative clinical and ra

Distal radius fractures are often treated conservatively with immobilization. Immobilizing above the elbow limits forearm rotation, though recent literature has suggested the effects on radiographic or functional outcomes may be negligible. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the radiographic and functional outcome scores of distal radius fractures managed with short-arm (SA) immobilization and long-arm (LA) immobilization. An electronic systematic search was performed of the PubMed and EMBASE databases from inception to October 5, 2022. All randomized controlled trials (

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous neurapraxia is the most common complication following distal biceps tendon repair (DBTR). Currently, no patient demographic factors have been implicated in its occurrence, course, or resolution. The purpose of this study is to explore various patient demographics and their association with postoperative neurapraxia. Further it investigates how mental health scores correlate with patient-reported outcomes, and whether occurrence of neurapraxia alters this association.
METHODS: This retrospective review evaluates a consecutive series of patients who underwent distal biceps

BACKGROUND: Explicit funding and industry affiliation are believed to potentially impact medical research. There have been an increasing number of studies that have evaluated this relationship. The purpose of this study is to determine whether industry affiliation influences the outcomes of randomized controlled trials that investigate the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.
METHODS: A search of PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and SCOPUS was performed using the search terms "lateral epicondylitis" and "platelet-rich plasma" as well as "tennis elbow" and

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a skeletal developmental abnormality commonly affecting the ribs, femur, tibia, skull, pelvis, spine, and shoulder. FD of the proximal radius is extremely rare and very few cases have been reported. In addition, monostotic lesions of FD in the upper extremity go unnoticed as they are usually asymptomatic. Symptomatic lesions warrant surgical intervention. Here, we present a rare case of FD of the proximal radius treated with curettage and non-vascularized fibular cortical strut graft with intramedullary elastic nailing. We believe that this is the first

An ape partial postcranial skeleton (KNM-NP 64631) was recovered during the 2015-2021 field seasons at Napudet, a Middle Miocene (∼13 Ma) locality in northern Kenya. Bony elements representing the shoulder, elbow, hip, and ankle joints, thoracic and lumbar vertebral column, and hands and feet, offer valuable new information about the body plan and positional behaviors of Middle Miocene apes. Body mass estimates from femoral head dimensions suggest that the KNM-NP 64631 individual was smaller-bodied (c. 13-17 kg) than some Miocene taxa from eastern Africa, including Ekembo nyanzae, and probably

BACKGROUND: Lateral condyle fracture of the humerus is the second most common elbow fracture in children. Non-displaced lateral condyle fractures can often be managed with cast and conservative care, while reduction and fixation are often used to treat displaced lateral condyle fractures. Traditionally, K-wire fixation has been used for displaced lateral condyle fractures, but recently fixation using screws has been advocated in some studies. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to determine the difference in outcomes and complications between the two different fixation methods for the trea

PURPOSE: Forearm supination contractures occur in 7% of children with brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI). Biceps rerouting is proposed when pronation has deteriorated but is passively correctable to at least 0° (neutral). The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate long-term outcomes of biceps rerouting for this indication, including magnitude and maintenance of correction, complications, and subsequent osteotomy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all children with BPBI and forearm supination contractures treated with biceps rerouting alone, for the above indications, f

RATIONALE: Distal radius fracture with simultaneous ipsilateral radial head fracture is a very rare pattern of injury. This type of injury is referred to as 'radius bipolar fracture'. Treatments for this injury pattern can be challenging because both the wrist and elbow need to be considered. There are currently no guidelines for the treatment of this specific type of injury. We report two cases of this unusual pattern of injury treated in our hospital.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Case 1 was a 78-year-old female patient and case 2 was a 19-year-old female patient who visited our emergency department wi

BACKGROUND: A segmental, contra-lateral cervical lateral glide (CCLG) mobilization technique is effective for patients with cervical radiculopathy (CR). The CCLG technique induces median nerve sliding in healthy individuals, but this has not been assessed in patients with CR.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to 1) assess longitudinal excursion of the median nerve in patients with CR and asymptomatic participants during a CCLG movement, 2) reassess nerve excursions following an intervention at a 3-month follow-up in patients with CR and 3) correlate changes in nerve excursions with changes in clini

BACKGROUND: As the incidence of overuse injuries to the medial elbow in overhead athletes continues to rise, recent evidence suggests a link between these injuries and alterations in biomechanics produced by athlete fatigue. Previous studies have evaluated the effect of fatigue on elbow injuries using a wide array of fatigue protocols/athletic tasks, and, as a consequence, the results have been heterogeneous.
PURPOSE: To determine whether there is a uniform alteration in neuromuscular function or biomechanics as the overhead athlete fatigues. Furthermore, this study sought to determine whethe

Longstanding humeral shaft nonunion is uncommon because humeral shaft fractures often respond well to conservative and surgical treatments. However, when it occurs, the treatment of longstanding humeral shaft nonunion is challenging. This study is a retrospective analysis of the clinical and radiographic findings in a consecutive series of patients with longstanding humeral shaft nonunions who underwent locking compression plate (LCP) fixation and autogenous iliac crest bone grafting.Six patients were surgically treated at Xi'an Hong Hui Hospital for longstanding humeral shaft nonunions betwee
