A 15-year follow-up study on long-term adherence to health behaviour recommendations in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Whilst a cancer diagnosis may prompt health behaviour change, there is limited evidence regarding whether such changes are maintained in the long-term. We aimed to investigate the impact of cancer diagnosis on health behaviour changes over the long-term survivorship period among breast cancer survivors (BCSs). METHODS: The sample comprised 153 BCSs and 4778 cancer-free women, aged 49-55 years in 2001 (our baseline), from the 1946-1951 birth cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Health behaviours (physical activity, smoking, alcohol, diet and Body Mass Inde

Food acculturation and nutrient intake among international students in India: an exploratory cross-cultural study.

INTRODUCTION: Food acculturation and dietary transitions among international students (IS) in Western countries have been reported to result in undesirable changes in eating behaviors and dietary patterns, which may negatively affect nutritional status and health after migration. These dietary changes may be influenced by various factors specific to the host country. Given the recent increase in IS enrollment in culturally diverse Asian countries such as India, there is a need to investigate food acculturation in the Indian context. Therefore, this study explored food acculturation, changes in

Mapping the global research landscape on malnutrition for patients with chronic kidney disease: a visualization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is seen as a diverse disease and a primary contributor to global mortality. Malnutrition arises within chronic illness, which involves protein energy depletion and inadequate levels of essential nutrients. These factors increase the likelihood of death and the overall impact of the disease on affected individuals. Consequently, this study aims to utilize bibliometric and visual analysis to assess the current state of research, the latest advances and emerging patterns in the fields of CKD and malnutrition. METHODS: Extensive research was conducted usin

Relationships Between Alcohol Intake and Mitochondrial DNA Methylation in the Human Prefrontal Cortex and Nucleus Accumbens.

AIMS: Despite the critical role of mitochondria in confronting alcohol challenges and providing energy, to date, there are no studies describing the effect of alcohol on mitochondrial epigenetics in energy-craving brain tissues. Focusing on the human nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and prefrontal cortex (PFC), we aimed to examine the effect of alcohol on mitochondrial DNA methylation. METHODS: We collected 105 brain tissue samples from 53 deceased individuals, classified into no antemortem alcohol use (n = 34), alcohol-ingested (n = 9) and alcohol-fermented (n = 10). Using whole-genome bisulphite se

Brain histaminergic system: An emerging target for the treatment of feeding and eating-related disorders.

Feeding is an intrinsic and fundamental behavior regulated by complex neurobiological networks that integrate peripheral metabolic signals with neurotransmitter systems within key brain regions. Histamine, a biogenic amine acting as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system, plays a crucial role in the regulation of food intake and energy homeostasis. Within the hypothalamus, histaminergic neurons influence appetite-related circuits, primarily through H1R and H3R. Central administration of histamine suppresses food consumption, an effect largely mediated via H1R. The blockade of H1R has b

The olfactory bulb: A neuroendocrine spotlight on feeding and metabolism.

Olfaction is the most ancient sense and is needed for food-seeking, danger protection, mating and survival. It is often the first sensory modality to perceive changes in the external environment, before sight, taste or sound. Odour molecules activate olfactory sensory neurons that reside on the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavity, which transmits this odour-specific information to the olfactory bulb (OB), where it is relayed to higher brain regions involved in olfactory perception and behaviour. Besides odour processing, recent studies suggest that the OB extends its function into the reg

Nutritional interventions for heart failure patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition or cachexia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Malnutrition is common in heart failure (HF), and it is associated with higher hospital readmission and mortality rates. This review aims to answer the question whether nutritional interventions aiming to increase protein and energy intake are effective at improving outcomes for patients with HF who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition or cachexia. Systematic searches of four databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL)) were conducted on 21 June 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or other interventional studies using protein or

Teneligliptin improves metabolic abnormalities in a mouse model of postmenopausal obesity.

A decrease in serum estrogen levels in menopause is closely associated with the development of visceral obesity and the onset of type 2 diabetes in women. In the present study, we demonstrated the therapeutic effects of the novel DPP4 inhibitor, teneligliptin, on the features of postmenopausal obesity in mice. In the control group, female C57BL/6 mice were sham-operated and maintained on a standard diet. In the postmenopausal obese group, ovariectomized (OVX) mice were maintained on a high-fat diet, and were referred to as OVX-HF. In the treated group, teneligliptin at 60 mg/kg per day was adm

Voluntary exercise adapts the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis in male rats.

The hypothalamic-pituitary thyroid (HPT) axis modulates energy homeostasis. Its activity decreases in conditions of negative energy balance but the effects of chronic exercise on the axis are controversial and unknown at hypothalamic level. Wistar male rats were exposed for up to 14 days to voluntary wheel running (WR), or pair-feeding (PF; 18% food restriction), or to repeated restraint (RR), a mild stressor. WR and RR diminished food intake; body weight gain decreased in the 3 experimental groups, but WAT mass and serum leptin more intensely in the WR group. WR, but not RR, produced a delaye

Intrahypothalamic pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide regulates energy balance via site-specific actions on feeding and metabolism.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that both the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) and ventromedial nuclei (VMN) regulate energy homeostasis through behavioral and metabolic mechanisms. Receptors for pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) are abundantly expressed in these nuclei, suggesting PACAP may be critical for the regulation of feeding behavior and body weight. To characterize the unique behavioral and physiological responses attributed to select hypothalamic cell groups, PACAP was site-specifically injected into the PVN or VMN. Overall food intake was signifi

The effect of serum magnesium levels and serum endothelin-1 levels on bone mineral density in protein energy malnutrition.

An inadequate and imbalanced intake of protein and energy results in protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). It is known that bone mineral density and serum magnesium levels are low in malnourished children. However, the roles of serum magnesium and endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in the pathophysiology of bone mineralization are obscure. Thus, the relationships between serum magnesium and ET-1 levels and the changes in bone mineral density were investigated in this study. There was a total of 32 subjects, 25 of them had PEM and seven were controls. While mean serum ET-1 levels of the children with kwas

Hormonal control of the neuropeptide Y system.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the related receptors represent a widely diffused system that is involved in the regulation of multiple biological functions. NPY, a 36-aminoacid peptide expressed in several areas of the nervous system, is a pleiotropic factor participating to the control of some physiological processes, such as cognitive functions, eating behavior, circadian rhythms, neuroendocrine mechanisms, reproductive and cardiovascular functions. NPY acts through a series of G-protein-associated membrane receptors (NPY-Rs), characterized by different tissue distribution and affinity for the lig

Obesity in young Europeans: genetic and environmental influences.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition, lifestyles and genetics are increasingly involved in the maintenance of health and the prevalence of several non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular illnesses, diabetes, cancer etc. In this context, obesity appears as a complex multi-factorial condition resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, which has been associated with the genetic background (more than 50 genes have been located in the human gene map associated to obesity), but also with environmental forces such as reduced physical activity (more than 60% of Europeans spend more

Interleukins and tumor necrosis factor as inhibitors of food intake.

Cytokines, such as interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), are produced in response to immune stimulation and have systemic effects, mediated by the central nervous system (CNS). Interleukins, in particular interleukin [IL]-1beta, and TNFalpha reduce food intake after peripheral and central administration, suggesting that they contribute to the anorexia during various infectious, neoplastic and autoimmune diseases. Because cytokines are mainly produced in the periphery during most of these diseases, IL-1beta and TNFalpha may inhibit feeding indirectly through neural and humora

Leptin: fundamental aspects.

The discovery of leptin, the product of the ob gene, has led to major developments in understanding the regulation of energy balance. It is now recognised that leptin is produced in several organs additional to white adipose tissue, including brown fat, the placenta and fetal tissues (such as heart and bone/cartilage). The hormone has multiple functions-in inhibiting food intake, in the stimulation/maintenance of energy expenditure, as a signal to the reproductive system and as a 'metabolic' hormone influencing a range of processes (for example, insulin secretion, lipolysis, sugar transport).

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Malnutrition and Metabolic Failure in High-Potency Incretin Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: High-potency incretin therapy achieved substantial weight loss, but the extreme energy deficits it induced may obscure the underlying nutritional deterioration. This meta-analysis synthesized data from 19 randomized trials across the SURMOUNT, STEP, SCALE, and OASIS programs to quantify the nutritional and body composition consequences of these agents in adults with obesity. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB2 tool, and certainty of evidence was rated using the GRADE approach. Continuou
