Economic estimation and impact of air pollution and temperature extremes on emergency hospital admissions in Spain.

Air pollution and extreme temperatures are important public health problems but their effects on morbidity are not usually measured jointly. The objective was thus to analyse the effect of short-term exposure to both air pollution and to heat and cold waves on emergency hospital admissions at a provincial level, and estimate the economic cost. Time series study analysing emergency hospital admissions due to natural causes (ICD-9:1-799 and ICD-10: A00-R99) across the period 2013-2018. The independent variables were daily mean concentrations of NO2, PM2.5, PM10 and ozone, the maximum daily tempe

[Impact of preconditioning to anxiety followed by exposure to air pollution on the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis].

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease in which phenotypic variability is still poorly understood. Our hypothesis is that the exposome, and more specifically exposure to air pollution and/or anxiety, could play a role in this phenomenon. In this context, we have developed an experimental study in which cystic fibrosis mice were exposed to stress (anxiety) and then to complex realistic atmospheres. Our results should provide mechanistic elements for a better understanding of the phenotypic variability observed in cystic fibrosis patients and thus be able to propose new avenues for better manageme

Can short-term exposure to air pollution trigger acute health effects in a region with low pollutant concentrations?

The daily air pollution limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO) are crucial in shaping air quality policies worldwide. This time-stratified case-crossover study investigates the effects of short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution on mortality, hospital admission and sick leaves in Baden-Württemberg, a region in Germany with consistently low pollution levels compared to other regions in Europe. Using a two-stage distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM), we examine the distribution of health risk in the region and estimate risks within a 7-day lag from the health event day (lag 0).T

Associations between exposure to air pollution and obesity and related anthropometric measurements in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to synthesize available evidence for the association of ambient air pollutants on overweight and obesity and other commonly used anthropometric measurements. METHODS: We searched five databases (OVID Medline, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and LILAC) and grey literature till December 2024. We included studies that met all of the following criteria in the review: participants ≥18 years and reported an association between PM2.5, NO2, O3 or SO2 and at least one of the outcomes of interest and an observational study design. Two independent reviewers assessed t

U.S. policy on wireless technologies and public health protection: regulatory gaps and proposed reforms.

The current U.S. regulatory framework governing non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation (RFR) used in all wireless technology is outdated and lacks adequate protection, oversight, and enforcement. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was given regulatory jurisdiction by the U.S. Congress in 1996 over RFR exposure standards setting even though FCC has no in-house expertise regarding health or environmental effects from RFR. FCC is a licensing/engineering entity that relies on other government agencies for guidance on ambient exposures and devices. However, all relevant civilian public

Association of environmental factors and biological metrics with lung health: an environment-wide association study.

Current understanding of respiratory health determinants remains fragmented and lacks comprehensiveness. We aimed to conduct an environmental-wide association study (EWAS) to systematically and unbiasedly identify environmental exposures and biological metrics associated with lung health. Eligible participants aged 40 years or older from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2018) were grouped into four overlapping cohorts based on outcomes of interest, including respiratory symptoms, spirometry metrics and patterns, and chronic lung diseases. Individuals in these cohor

Health benefits of a reduction in ambient fine particulate matter levels for post-neonatal infant survival in Taiwan.

Infants' and children's health is particularly susceptible to exposure to various environmental contaminant insults as their immune systems are immature and daily activities may present differing patterns of exposure. Although some studies noted an association between long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and increased infant mortality frequency, few investigations examined the relationship between reduced exposure to PM2.5 and changes in infant mortality rates. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether diminished levels of PM2.5 in Taiwan improved post-n

Characterization of volatile organic compounds emissions and health risk assessment in coking industry: A case study in East China.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a critical category of air pollutants, and the emissions from anthropogenic sources are essential for understanding and managing VOC pollution and the resultant ozone (O3) pollution. Several research initiatives have evaluated VOC emissions from significant industrial sources in China; however, knowledge regarding VOC emissions in the coking industry is still insufficient. The investigation examines the characteristics of VOC emissions from the coking industry through detailed unit-based field sampling, constructs emission source profiles, identifies

Exposure to disinfection by-products and risk of birth defects: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis.

The disinfection of drinking water has been a major public health achievement, significantly reducing waterborne diseases. However, there are also some drawbacks in this practice, particularly the fact that chlorinated disinfectants can generate disinfection by-products (DBPs) which in turn have been associated with adverse health effects, including birth defects. The extent to which such adverse reproductive effect may occur following chlorinated water consumption, and the possible threshold of exposure involved, are however not entirely clear. This systematic review and dose-response meta-an

Birth weight in relation to maternal and neonatal biomarker concentration of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid: a meta-analysis and meta-regression from a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a legacy chemical, that while banned in some countries, is still found in various environmental media and in nearly all humans given its long half-life. OBJECTIVE: We examined mean birth weight (BW) differences in relation to PFOS exposure biomarkers using systematic review methods. METHODS: We fit a random effects model to obtain the overall pooled effect and for stratified analyses examining biomarker sample type and timing, study confidence, scaling factors, and country of study origin. We also conducted a meta-regression to assess the i

Cardiovascular risk posed by the exposome.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 2/3 of global deaths annually, primarily due to an aging population and external risk factors such as air/water/soil pollution, traffic noise, mental stress, and climate change emanating from the environment. These factors contribute to premature deaths and loss of healthy life years, as reflected by disability-adjusted life years. The exposome concept was proposed 16 years ago as a new research field to investigate environment-health associations, also by considering the underlying pathophysiological pathways. The exposome describes lifelon

Effect and prediction of long-term weather and pollutant exposure on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome: based on statistical models.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have typically explored daily lagged relationships between hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and meteorology, with a limited seasonal exploration of monthly lagged relationships, interactions, and the role of pollutants in multiple predictions of hemorrhagic fever. METHODS: Our researchers collected data on HFRS cases from 2005 to 2018 and meteorological and contaminative factors from 2015 to 2018 for the northeastern region. First, we applied the moving epidemic method (MEM) to estimate the epidemic threshold and intensity level. Then, we used a distri

Tsutsugamushi Disease in a Non-endemic Season and Region: Suspected Indoor Exposure via Pet-associated Vector Entry.

We report a case of tsutsugamushi disease in a 41-year-old woman diagnosed during a non-endemic season in a previously low-incidence region without any history of outdoor exposure. The patient owned five cats with close contact that moved freely between the indoor and outdoor environments, suggesting the possibility that infected chiggers were carried indoors by the cats and transmitted Orientia tsutsugamushi to the patient. This case suggests that tsutsugamushi disease may be under-recognized and under-reported in such regions. Even in the absence of typical histories such as outdoor exposure

Associations between metal/metalloid exposure during pregnancy and placental growth characteristics: Findings from the Hangzhou birth cohort study II.

Previous studies have suggested that metal/metalloid (hereafter referred to as metal) exposure may influence placental growth by affecting gene expression in the placenta. However, no epidemiological studies have been conducted to validate the relationships between metals exposure, placental gene expression, and placental growth at the population level. This study aims to investigate these relationships based on Hangzhou birth cohort study II (HBCS-II). Totally, 1025 participants were derived from HBCS-II. Thirteen metals levels in the placenta were measured using inductively coupled plasma ma

Associations of arsenic exposure and arsenic metabolism with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Growing evidences supported that arsenic exposure contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) risk, but findings were still inconsistent. Additionally, once absorbed, arsenic is methylated into monomethyl and dimethyl arsenicals. However, no studies investigated the association of arsenic metabolism with NAFLD. Our objectives were to evaluate the associations of arsenic exposure and arsenic metabolism with NAFLD prevalence. We conducted a case-control study with 1790 participants derived from Dongfeng-Tongji cohort and measured arsenic species (arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsona

From indoors to outdoors: Impact of waste anesthetic gases on occupationally exposed professionals and related environmental hazards - A narrative review and update.

Waste anesthetic gases (WAGs) are trace-concentration inhaled anesthetics that exist worldwide because they are released into the ambient air of operating rooms (ORs) and post-anesthesia care units. WAGs cause indoor contamination, especially in ORs lacking proper scavenging systems, and occupational exposure, while promoting climate change through greenhouse gas/ozone-depleting effects. Despite these controversial features, WAGs continue to pose occupational health hazards. Occupational exposure to WAGs has been linked to oxidative stress and cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic potential. This

The effects of air and transportation noise pollution-related altered blood gene expression, DNA methylation, and protein abundance levels on gastrointestinal diseases risk.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution and transportation noise pollution has been linked to gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, but their relationship remains unclear. METHODS: We extracted the significantly modulated genes and CpG sites related to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10, and NOx) and transportation noise pollution (aircraft, railway, and traffic road noise) from previous published studies. Genome-wide methylation analysis and colocalization analysis with these CpG sites and GWAS data of GI diseases were performed to disentangle the relationship between pollution-related blood DNA methylation (DNAm) al

Air pollution is associated with increased incidence-rate of head and neck cancers: A nationally representative ecological study.

INTRODUCTION: Early studies show conflicting findings regarding particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) exposure and development of head and neck cancers (HNC). We analyzed the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and various types of HNC in a nationally representative ecological sample. METHODS: We determined HNC incidence in 608 US counties from 2011 to 2019 using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program from the National Cancer Institute. We also collected information on sociodemographic factors from SEER and data on smoking and alcohol intake from CDC data fram
