Social disparities in exposure to noise at public schools in the contiguous United States.

Children are vulnerable to environmental hazards and spend significant portions of their days at school. However, just one national-level study has examined school-level environmental inequalities (in air pollution exposures), and none have examined disparate exposures to noise pollution, even though noise impacts children's health and development. We integrated data from 2014-2015 on the locations and socio-demographics of each public school in the contiguous US (n=94,432) with road and aviation transportation noise estimates. Using bivariate and multivariate statistics, we tested for dispari

Evaluation of Short-Term Exposure Levels on Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulfide During Manure-Handling Processes at Livestock Farms.

BACKGROUND: Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide are harmful gases generated during aerobic/anaerobic bacterial decomposition of livestock manure. We evaluated ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations generated from workplaces at livestock farms and determined environmental factors influencing the gas concentrations. METHODS: Five commercial swine farms and five poultry farms were selected for monitoring. Real-time monitors were used to measure the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations and environmental conditions during the manure-handling processes. Monitoring was conducted in the manure s

Multidrug-Resistant Aspergillus fumigatus Carrying Mutations Linked to Environmental Fungicide Exposure - Three States, 2010-2017.

The environmental mold Aspergillus fumigatus is the primary cause of invasive aspergillosis. In patients with high-risk conditions, including stem cell and organ transplant recipients, mortality exceeds 50%. Triazole antifungals have greatly improved survival (1); however, triazole-resistant A. fumigatus infections are increasingly reported worldwide and are associated with increased treatment failure and mortality (2). Of particular concern are resistant A. fumigatus isolates carrying either TR34/L98H or TR46/Y121F/T289A genetic resistance markers, which have been associated with environmenta

Ecological approaches in veterinary epidemiology: mapping the risk of bat-borne rabies using vegetation indices and night-time light satellite imagery.

Rabies remains a disease of significant public health concern. In the Americas, bats are an important source of rabies for pets, livestock, and humans. For effective rabies control and prevention, identifying potential areas for disease occurrence is critical to guide future research, inform public health policies, and design interventions. To anticipate zoonotic infectious diseases distribution at coarse scale, veterinary epidemiology needs to advance via exploring current geographic ecology tools and data using a biological approach. We analyzed bat-borne rabies reports in Chile from 2002 to

Spatio-Temporal Identification of Areas Suitable for West Nile Disease in the Mediterranean Basin and Central Europe.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-transmitted Flavivirus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of the Flaviviridae family. Its spread in the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans poses a significant risk to human health and forces public health officials to constantly monitor the virus transmission to ensure prompt application of preventive measures. In this context, predictive tools indicating the areas and periods at major risk of WNV transmission are of paramount importance. Spatial analysis approaches, which use environmental and climatic variables to find suitable habit

Global climate anomalies and potential infectious disease risks: 2014-2015.

BACKGROUND: The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a global climate phenomenon that impacts human infectious disease risk worldwide through droughts, floods, and other climate extremes. Throughout summer and fall 2014 and winter 2015, El Niño Watch, issued by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, assessed likely El Niño development during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter, persisting into spring 2015. METHODS: We identified geographic regions where environmental conditions may increase infectious disease transmission if the predicted El Niño occurs using El Niño in

Low birth weight and environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of wheezing in adolescents: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure are each associated with wheezing in children. This study was designed to examine the combined association of LBW and ETS with wheezing. METHODS: A retrospective birth cohort analysis linked with a national survey of allergic disorders among 1,018,031 junior high school students in Taiwan (1995-1996) was analyzed. The reported incidence of wheezing (yes or no) and ETS exposure (4 categories: 0, 1-20, 21-40 and greater than or equal to 41 household cigarettes per day) were obtained from validated questionnaires.

Traffic noise and cardiovascular health in Sweden: the roadside study.

Long-term exposure to traffic noise has been suggested to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, few studies have been performed in the general population and on railway noise. This study aimed to investigate the cardiovascular effects of living near noisy roads and railways. This cross-sectional study comprised 25,851 men and women, aged 18-80 years, who had resided in Sweden for at least 5 years. All subjects participated in a National Environmental Health Survey, performed in 2007, in which they reported on health, annoyance reactions and environmental factors. Questio

Low genetic diversity in a snail intermediate host (Biomphalaria pfeifferi Krass, 1848) and schistosomiasis transmission in the Senegal River Basin.

Population genetic perturbations of intermediate hosts, often a consequence of human pressure on environmental resources, can precipitate unexpectedly severe disease outbreaks. Such disturbances are set to become increasingly common following range changes concomitant with climate shifts, dwindling natural resources and major infrastructure changes such as hydroprojects. Construction of the Diama dam in the Senegal River Basin (SRB) reduced river salinity, enabling the freshwater snail intermediate host Biomphalaria pfeifferi to rapidly expand its distribution. A serious public health problem

Detection and Surveillance of Invasive Aedes Mosquitoes in Spain: Implications for Arbovirus Risk and Public Health Preparedness.

The expansion of invasive mosquito species of the genus Aedes has become a growing public health concern in Europe due to their role in the transmission of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Early detection and surveillance of these vectors are essential to prevent the establishment of local transmission cycles. This study presents a review of surveillance reports and rapid risk assessments issued by the Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Centre of the Spanish Ministry of Health, complemented by relevant scientific literature on the presence and spread of Aedes albopict

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a natural microbial predator in the fight against pathogens-one health approach.

Multiple drug-resistant bacterial infections have led to an increasing need for an effective disease outbreak response system, such as the One Health platform. While interactions among humans, animals, and ecosystems are crucial and inevitable for survival, the intercommunity transfer of drug resistance genes and the resulting diseases are matters of concern. The concept of bacterial predation and its application in different fields have attracted interest as a natural alternative to traditional antibiotics. Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, an obligate bacterial predator, preys on a wide range of o

Alcohol Consumption and Cardiovascular Disease: A Narrative Review of Evolving Perspectives and Long-Term Implications.

Cardiovascular illnesses remain the primary cause of death, accounting for at least 17.9 million fatalities per year and posing a significant public health problem because of its extensive predominance and effect on healthcare systems. The etiology of cardiovascular disease is complex and involves several environmental and lifestyle factors. Alcohol use is a highly important determinant because of its dual-edged effect on cardiovascular health. Multiple studies indicate that moderate alcohol consumption may have certain advantages, such as slight enhancements in lipid profiles. Conversely, exc

The Bahraini food based dietary guidelines: a holistic perspective to health and wellbeing.

The impact of food consumption extends well beyond the physical aspect of health to affect the mind, the society, and the environment. The biopsycho-ecological (BSE) theory recognizes the interplay between these factors and emphasizes the need for a holistic perspective to dietary recommendations. This manuscript presents a situation analysis of food consumption and diet-related diseases in Bahrain and describes the themes of the Bahraini Food based dietary guidelines (FBDG) and their alignment with the BSE constructs. Available data revealed low fruit and vegetable intake and excessive consum

Racial disparities in early pregnancy: a narrative review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review introduces the recognized body of evidence on social determinants of health, which continue to show that a person's health is determined by their broader environmental and social context and that societal inequities harm health and healthcare outcomes. An area of inequity is race, which, although a social construct, has a significant impact on a person's morbidity and mortality as well as their access and experience of healthcare. Racial disparities in maternal and perinatal outcomes are widely recognized. Therefore, this review focuses on the less commonly addre

[The social determinants of child malnutrition in Colombia from a family medicine perspective].

CONTEXT: Child malnutrition is a public health problem not only in Colombia but throughout the world, as it increases mortality associated with preventable causes. In Colombia, poverty is one of those causes present mainly in rural areas where one in 10 children suffers from malnutrition. METHODOLOGY: We searched ScienceDirect, PubMed, ClinicalKey, and SciELO for references on child malnutrition, its social determinants, and elements for its intervention in Colombia. RESULTS: The review allowed us to identify that many factors influence this problem determined not only by the lack of food bu

Seven principles for a critical transdisciplinary approach to planetary health.

The ecological, social, and health crises of the Anthropocene demand approaches to knowledge that confront complexity, uncertainty, and structural injustice. Transdisciplinarity is an approach that can transcend disciplinary silos by integrating academic and non-academic knowledge. Yet, action on public health, planetary health, and health inequities is often implemented in technocratic, depoliticised, and tokenistic ways. Such practices risk marginalising lived experience, reinforcing epistemic hierarchies, and overlooking structural drivers such as capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy. Dr
