The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) consists largely of two different types of components: neurons that release the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (NE, noradrenaline) to modulate homeostasis of the innevrvated effector organ or tissue and adrenal chromaffin cells, which synthesize and secrete the hormone epinephrine (Epi, adrenaline) and some NE into the blood circulation to act at distant organs and tissues that are not directly innervated by the SNS. Like almost every physiological process in the human body, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) tightly modulate both NE release from sympathe

Background: Current evidence indicates that some phenotypic characteristics, such as eye or hair color, might be associated with the experience of pain. We, therefore, compared the anesthetic success rate of inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) and postoperative pain scores between light eyes and dark eyes in female patients who experienced symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP) in a mandibular molar. Methods: This prospective, parallel-group, observational study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT06206304). A total of 110 adult female patients who experienced moderate or severe pain

G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER-1) has gained recognition for its role in conferring cardioprotection. However, the extent to which GPER-1 exerts equally important effects in both sexes remains unclear. The study found similar expressions of GPER-1 in rat heart apex in both sexes. In male rats, administering epinephrine (Epi) at a dose of 31.36 microg/100 g resulted in a rapid decline in cardiac function, accompanied by a sharp increase in bax/bcl-2 levels. In contrast, female rats did not display significant changes in cardiac function under the same conditions. Additionally, comp

Hormonal influence on hepatic function is a critical aspect of whole-body energy balance in vertebrates. Catecholamines and corticosteroids both influence hepatic energy balance via metabolite mobilization through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Elasmobranchs have a metabolic organization that appears to prioritize the mobilization of hepatic lipid as ketone bodies (e.g. 3-hydroxybutyrate [3-HB]), which adds complexity in determining the hormonal impact on hepatic energy balance in this taxon. Here, a liver perfusion was used to investigate catecholamine (epinephrine [E]) and corticosteroi

Rationale: It is unknown whether preventing overdistention or collapse is more important when titrating positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Objectives: To compare PEEP targeting minimal overdistention or minimal collapse or using a compromise between collapse and overdistention in a randomized trial and to assess the impact on respiratory mechanics, gas exchange, inflammation, and hemodynamics. Methods: In a porcine model of ARDS, lung collapse and overdistention were estimated using electrical impedance tomography during a decremental PEEP ti

Pheochromocytomas (PCCs) and paragangliomas (PGLs) represent tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal sympathetic paraganglia, respectively. PCCs commonly produce one or more catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine), but rarely are they biochemically silent. PGLs on the other hand, generally do not produce catecholamines. They have the highest heritability of all adrenal tumors and are known to be associated with genetic mutations. Patients with hereditary tumors typically present at a younger age and with multifocal disease when compared

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with high blood pressure that responds poorly to usual antihypertensive therapy.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-one subjects with OSA had 25% higher plasma norepinephrine and 42% higher epinephrine measured every 2 h over 24 h than 20 control subjects. They also excreted more sodium during sleep. This suggested that that a sympatholytic would be a more successful antihypertensive than a diuretic. To test this hypothesis we treated a second group of 23 hypertensive apneics with placebo, 6 weeks of the sympatholytic guanfacine and 6 weeks of h

INTRODUCTION: Many endocrine diseases, such as neuroblastoma (NB), can be linked with acquired cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Neuroblastoma's cardiovascular manifestations are typically hypertension, electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, and conduction disturbances.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old 8-month-old girl was admitted to the hospital with ventricular hypertrophy and hypertension (HT) and heart failure. She had no previous history of HT. On color doppler echocardiography, the left atrium and left ventricle were enlarged. The left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) was as low as 40%, and

BACKGROUND: In 1990, David Barker proposed that prenatal nutrition is directly linked to adult cardiovascular disease. Since then, the relationship between adult cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome and birth weight has been widely documented. Here, we used the TruSeq Methyl Capture EPIC platform to compare the methylation patterns in cord blood from large for gestational age (LGA) vs adequate for gestational age (AGA) newborns from the LARGAN cohort.
RESULTS: We found 1672 differentially methylated CpGs (DMCs) with a nominal p < 0.05 and 48 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) with a

Introduction: Luteolin inhibits platelet activation and thrombus formation, but the mechanisms are unclear. This study investigated the effects of luteolin on GPVI-mediated platelet activation in vitro and explored the effect of luteolin on thrombosis, coagulation, and platelet production in vivo. Methods: Washed human platelets were used for aggregation, membrane protein expression, ATP, Ca2+, and LDH release, platelet adhesion/spreading, and clot retraction experiments. Washed human platelets were used to detect collagen and convulxin-induced reactive oxygen species production and endogenous

BACKGROUND: Post-extubation stridor (PES) is a common problem in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and is associated with extubation failure, longer length of stay, and increased mortality. Infants represent a large proportion of PICU admissions and are at higher risk for PES, making identification and mitigation of factors associated with PES important in this age group.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What factors are associated with PES in infants (age less than 1 year) intubated in the PICU?
STUDY DESIGN & METHODS: The primary outcome was PES as defined by the need for racemic epinephrine with

Ozone-induced lung injury, inflammation, and pulmonary/hypothalamus gene expression changes are diminished in adrenalectomized (AD) rats. Acute ozone exposure induces metabolic alterations concomitant with increases in epinephrine and corticosterone. We hypothesized that adrenal hormones are responsible for observed hepatic ozone effects, and in AD rats, these changes would be diminished. In total, 5-7 days after sham (SH) or AD surgeries, male Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed to air or 0.8-ppm ozone for 4 h. Serum samples were analyzed for metabolites and liver for transcriptional changes immed

INTRODUCTION: Type 3 von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by undetectable von Willebrand Antigen (VWF:Ag). Carriers of type 3 VWD carry one null allele and have von Willebrand factor (VWF) at about 50% of normal. The aim of this study was to characterize type 3 VWD carriers and to study the role of Platelet Function Analyzer (PFA-200) in this cohort.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study where data were collected from carriers (parents/offspring) of type 3 VWD patients and evaluated with activated partial thromboplastin time, factor VIII, blood

The presented work concerns pattern-based sensing with quantum dots for the identification and quantification of neurotransmitters by means of excitation-emission fluorescence spectroscopy (2D fluorescence). In the framework of this study, glutathione capped CdSeS/ZnS nanocrystals were used as non-specific nanoreceptors capable of differentiated interaction with neurotransmitters. The pattern-based sensing with QDs was realized by using excitation-emission fluorescence spectroscopy to provide analyte-specific multidimensional optical information. These characteristic fluorescent response patte

Fermitin family homolog 3 (FERMT3), alternatively kindlin-3 (KIND3), is an integrin binding protein (of 667 residues) encoded by the FERMT3 gene. The molecule is essential for activating integrin αIIbβ3 (the fibrinogen receptor) on platelets and for the integrin-mediated hematopoietic cell (including platelets, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and granulocytes) adhesion. Its defects are associated with impaired primary hemostasis, described as "Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (MIM#273800)-like bleeding problem." The defects are also associated with infections, designated as "LAD1 (leukocyte adhesion d

Indomethacin has been widely used in preterm infants with hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Gastrointestinal complications of indomethacin have been reported in 5% of treated neonates. However, massive gastric mucosa hemorrhage is a rarely reported complication. To the best of our knowledge, the infant in this report is the smallest reported in the literature to have undergone successful surgery for such a complication. A male preterm infant weighing 566 g was born at 252/7 weeks of gestational age without a complicated maternal history. Soon after birth, he received

BACKGROUND: The feasibility and benefits of continuous sustained inflations (SIs) during chest compressions (CCs) during delayed cord clamping (physiological-based cord clamping; PBCC) are not known. We aimed to determine whether continuous SIs during CCs would reduce the time to return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and improve post-asphyxial blood pressures and flows in asystolic newborn lambs.
METHODS: Fetal sheep were surgically instrumented immediately prior to delivery at ~139 days' gestation and asphyxia induced until lambs reached asystole. Lambs were randomised to either immediate
