Understanding barriers to effective malaria diagnosis and treatment: A mixed-methods study in Uganda, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast.

Malaria remains a global health challenge despite decades of intervention. We conducted a mixed-methods study using the MAPPS behavioural science framework to identify and explore behaviours relating to timely access and better adherence to antimalarials, and to offer initial ideas for interventions. Research was conducted in Uganda, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast following local ethical approval. First, qualitative face-to-face interviews were conducted with n = 18 adults with experience of malaria, n = 36 caregivers of children with experience of malaria, and n = 36 healthcare professionals (HCPs)

Using online platforms to offer or seek sperm donation: A systematised narrative review of donor and recipient experiences.

Online sperm donation (OSD) is reshaping donor conception by enabling direct connections between donors and recipients outside clinical settings. This systematised narrative review triangulates existing research on sperm donors and recipients who connect through OSD platforms, comparing their perceptions and experiences across different stages of the donation process. By exploring the complex interplay between donors' and recipients' motivations, it fosters dialogue between research areas often examined in isolation. Studies show that donors and recipients, who often explore alternatives along

Social and economic impacts of congenital Zika syndrome in Brazil: Study protocol and rationale for a mixed-methods study.

Global concern broke out in late 2015 as thousands of children in Brazil were born with microcephaly, which was quickly linked to congenital infection with Zika virus (ZIKV). ZIKV is now known to cause a wider spectrum of severe adverse outcomes-congenital Zika syndrome (CZS)-and also milder impairments. This study aimed to explore the social and economic impacts of CZS in Brazil. Data was collected through mixed methods across two settings: Recife City and Jaboatão dos Guararapes in Pernambuco State (the epicentre of the epidemic), and the city of Rio de Janeiro (where reports of ZIKV infecti

TaIlored ManagEment of Sleep (TIMES) for people with dementia and mild cognitive impairment in primary care in England: protocol for a feasibility cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People living with dementia (PLWD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and their family carers, often experience sleep disturbance which can impair daily living and care. There are limited options for effective long-term pharmacological management of sleep disturbance, yet recent advances in non-pharmacological approaches offer promising alternatives. TIMES is a novel, complex intervention, which aims to improve wellbeing for PLWD/MCI and their carers in primary care, by developing whole-person, tailored care plans that optimise management of sleep disturbance in context. Grounded theory study on the psychological and behavioural processes of medical nurses in response to patient incivility.

BACKGROUND: Patient incivility is a significant source of work-related stress for nurses, particularly in highly interactive departments such as internal medicine. Although such behaviours are low in intensity, they occur frequently, continuously depleting nurses' emotional and psychological resources and impacting their well-being and the safety of nursing care. Existing research predominantly focuses on the impact at an overall level, lacking in-depth understanding of nurses' individual cognition, coping strategies, and internal psychological processes within specific situations. This study

Walking for Health: Franz Tappeiner (1816-1902), Meran, and the Origins of Public Health-Oriented Physical Activity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Franz Tappeiner (1816-1902) is often celebrated as a pioneer of alpine medicine and the founder of Tappeiner Promenade in Meran (South Tyrol, Italy). However, his legacy extends far beyond the scenic infrastructure, encompassing a comprehensive vision of physical activity as a public health intervention. His multidisciplinary practice anticipated the principles of contemporary rehabilitation, preventive medicine, and climate-sensitive public health. METHODS: This historical public health analysis, combining biographical, contextual, and material-spatial approaches, rein

Identifying molecular signatures of post-traumatic stress disorder vulnerability and progression in a longitudinal study: a study protocol.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder, which develops in a subset of trauma-exposed individuals. Patients with PTSD fail to extinguish fear responses to no-longer dangerous stimuli and develop enduring experiences of fear and anxiety. To advance the understanding of PTSD neurobiology, longitudinal and comprehensive clinical and molecular data are needed. Here we present the protocol of the project "Reli€ving-PTSD" aiming at identifying the molecular signatures of PTSD vulnerability and disease progression in a longitudinal study in humans. The mole

Advances in the application of artificial intelligence in mass spectrometry-based analysis of traditional Chinese medicine: compound identification and metabolic pathway elucidation.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), characterized by its multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway nature, presents considerable challenges in the identification of chemical constituents and elucidation of metabolic mechanisms. TCM samples encompass a wide range of materials, including crude herbal parts, processed products, in vitro cell cultures, and in vivo biological specimens, each contributing to the complexity of analysis. MS, as a pivotal analytical tool for uncovering the material basis of TCM, has been widely employed for compound identification and in vivo metabolic pathway a

Self-directed arm-crank exercise to improve volitional control of the trunk in patients with subacute spinal cord injury: a multicentre, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: A spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts synaptic connections between the corticospinal tract and motor neurons, impairing muscle control below the injury site. Many individuals with an SCI have impaired trunk control, affecting the performance of activities of daily living and quality of life. Work has shown improvements in trunk control after home-based, unsupervised arm-crank exercise training (ACET) in people with chronic motor-incomplete SCI. However, no studies have examined ACET's impact on trunk control in individuals with subacute SCI. This study aims to investigate ACET's ef

Efficacy and safety of intrapleural administration of sodium bicarbonate in patients with acute empyema and complicated parapneumonic effusion: protocol for a prospective, single-arm, interventional study.

BACKGROUND: The standard treatment for acute empyema/complicated parapneumonic effusion (CPPE) is antibiotic administration and continuous chest drainage. However, adequate drainage becomes impossible in multichambered pleural effusion and some patients may require surgery or may die. In Japan, intrapleural urokinase is frequently used to restore drainage effects; however, its supply was suspended in 2022 owing to difficulties in procuring the raw materials. In recent years, the effectiveness of intrapleural sodium bicarbonate administration for empyema/CPPE has been reported; however, complic

Efficacy of patient education and duloxetine, alone and in combination, for patients with multisystem functional somatic disorder: Study protocol for the EDULOX trial.

BACKGROUND: Multisystem functional somatic disorder is characterized by specific patterns of persistent physical symptoms with a complex biopsychosocial etiology. The disorder can lead to disability and personal suffering. Current treatment options require specialized settings, therefore patients often wait a long time to receive specific treatment. Patient education is considered important in most treatment programs, but has only been investigated sparsely as a stand-alone treatment. Pharmacological treatment is limited to tricyclic antidepressants in low doses with no antidepressant properti
