Distraction osteogenesis for lengthening of the hard palate: Part II. Histological study of the hard and soft palate after distraction.

To correct velopharyngeal incompetence, a new treatment concept was proposed in Distraction Osteogenesis for Lengthening of the Hard Palate: Part I (using lengthening of the hard and soft palate by distraction osteogenesis). Cephalometry and computed tomography showed successful elongation of the posterior hard palate with gradual calcification. Here the sequential use of fluorochrome markers (oxytetracycline, xylenol orange, DCAF [2,4-bis-N-N'-dicarboxymethyl aminomethyl fluorescein], and alizarin complexone) during the distraction and retention period is reported together with the histologic

Endocrinology of human parturition: a review.

The existing data on the hormonal factors involved in human parturition indicate that the steroid hormones, progesterone and the oestrogens, play only a facilitatory role in the initiation of labour. A definite role for fetal adrenal steroids in this process has yet to be established, and they too may serve only a facilitating function. The stimulation of the uterine muscle during labour results from an interaction of oxytocin and prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha. Recent evidence suggests that oxytocin is most important for the initial phase of labour, whereas increased synthesis of PGF2 alpha is e

Nutritional Modulation of the Immuno-Biomineral Interface: From Vascular Calcification to a Hypothesis-Generating Framework for Tumor-Associated Biomineralization.

Pathological biomineralization is increasingly recognized as a regulated biological process involving interactions among mineral metabolism, inflammation, cellular stress, extracellular vesicles (EVs), extracellular matrix (ECM) components, and mineral precursors. These processes are particularly well characterized in vascular calcification, where immune, metabolic, vesicular, and matrix-associated pathways contribute to ectopic mineral deposition. Tumor-associated mineralization is also documented in several malignancies, but its cellular origins, mineral composition, and biological significa

Ovarian cancer presentation and management in sub-Saharan Africa: a scooping review protocal.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is a leading gynecological malignancy mortality globally. Clinical outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are poor, largely due to late-stage presentation and limited accessing to effective treatment options. Referral pathways also delay diagnosis and compromise delivery of guideline-concordant care. A comprehensive mapping of evidence on ovarian cancer presentation and management across SSA is needed to characterize what is known, where evidence is concentrated, and where critical gaps persist. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol describes a systematic scoping revi

A systematic review on the impact of gestational Lyme disease in humans on the fetus and newborn.

Lyme disease (LD), caused by bacteria of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex, is the most common vector-borne disease in North America and Europe. A systematic review (SR) was conducted to summarize the global literature on adverse birth outcomes associated with gestational LD in humans. The SR followed an a priori protocol of pretested screening, risk of bias, and data extraction forms. Data were summarized descriptively and random effects meta-analysis (MA) was used where appropriate. The SR identified 45 relevant studies, 29 describing 59 cases reported as gestational LD in

The efficacy and safety of Cangfu Daotan decoction in the treatment of infertility associated with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by ovulatory dysfunction and hormonal imbalance, often leading to infertility. Cangfu Daotan Decoction (CFDTT, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Cyperi Rhizoma, Pinelliae Rhizoma, Poria, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Arisaema cum Bile, Aurantii Fructus) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula commonly used to treat PCOS-related infertility, with its pathogenesis attributed to phlegm-dampness obstruction. There is an urgent need for a systematic evaluation of its efficacy and safety. O

Enhanced observation for management of agitated, confused or distressed behaviours in acute general hospitals: systematic review of quality and safety considerations.

BACKGROUND: People who are agitated, confused or distressed seldom receive holistic care within acute general hospitals. Unmet needs relating to conditions such as mental illnesses, learning disabilities or dementia can contribute to patient behaviours which staff find challenging to manage (e.g. self-harm). Enhanced observation, involving one-to-one care and monitoring, is a restrictive intervention often used to manage these presentations. The characteristics and outcomes of high-quality enhanced observation in this setting remain ill-defined, compromising quality and safety. AIMS: To under

The cGAS-STING signaling axis in Type 2 diabetes-associated cognitive decline: from mitochondrial DNA sensing to neurodegeneration.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to cognitive decline, substantially elevating the risk of dementia through mechanisms that extend beyond chronic hyperglycemia. Among the interconnected pathological processes underlying diabetic neurodegeneration, mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a pivotal upstream event that promotes oxidative stress, impairs mitophagy, and leads to the cytosolic release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Recent evidence identifies the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway as a critical

The impact of gut microbiome on intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy-systematic literature review.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the gut microbiome and its potential role in the etiopathogenesis of both gastrointestinal and extraintestinal diseases. Dysbiosis, characterized by a pathological alteration in the composition of the gut microbiome, has been implicated in various gastrointestinal diseases. This paradigm extends to pregnancy-specific conditions, including intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). ICP exhibits a multifactorial etiopathogenesis, involving hormonal, genetic and environmental factors, among others. Despite growing scientific evidence, there

Development of targeted strategies to enhance linkage and retention in HIV care among people living with HIV/AIDS in Mpumalanga province.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in HIV services, significant patient loss occurs at every stage of the HIV care continuum. While efforts made by the NDoH aim to combat the HIV epidemic and achieve the 95-95-95 targets, these targets cannot be reached unless PLHIV are effectively linked to and retained in care. This study aims to develop targeted strategies to improve linkage to and retention in HIV care among PLHIV in the Msukaligwa Sub-district, Mpumalanga Province. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design will be employed. The study will consist of four phases: (1) a sco
