Paternal exercise protects against liver steatosis in the male offspring of mice submitted to high fat diet.

UNLABELLED: Parental lifestyle has been related to alterations in the phenotype of their offspring. Obese sires can induce offspring insulin resistance as well as increase susceptibility to obesity. On the other hand, obese sires submitted to voluntary exercise ameliorate the deleterious metabolic effects on their offspring. However, there are no studies reporting the effect of programmed exercise training of lean sires on offspring metabolism. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the role of swimming training of sires for 6 weeks on the offspring metabolic phenotype. MAIN METHODS: Male C57

Immediate effect of scapula-focused exercises performed with kinematic biofeedback on scapular kinematics in individuals with subacromial pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Given the changes in the patterns of muscular activation and scapular movement in individuals with subacromial pain syndrome, the use of neuromuscular training has been considered in rehabilitation protocols. There is currently no evidence of the effects of the use of three-dimensional (3D) kinematic biofeedback on individuals with subacromial pain syndrome. This study aimed to determine the immediate effect of scapular motor control exercises using 3D kinematic biofeedback on the scapular kinematics, inter-segment coordination and pain of individuals with subacromial pain syndrome

Predicting hamstring strain injury in elite athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Eccentric exercise, where the contracting muscle is lengthened, produces microscopic damage in muscle fibers, and sensations of stiffness and soreness, the next day. These normally resolve within a week. A more major sports injury is the muscle strain. Because strain injuries are known to occur during eccentric contractions, it is hypothesized that the microscopic damage from eccentric exercise can, at times, progress to a muscle strain. As the amount of microscopic damage depends on the muscle's optimum length for active tension, it is further proposed that optimum length is a m

Acute Affective Responses and Perceived Exertion during a Single Bout of Virtual Reality Exercise.

Virtual reality (VR) exercise has emerged as a promising modality for promoting physical activity engagement, yet its acute psychological effects remain incompletely characterized. This study examined pre-to-post changes in positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA), as measured by the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), following a single bout of exercise in VR in a community sample (N = 58 total enrolled; n = 52 exercise group, n = 6 passive VR control; ages 16 and older). Participants also rated perceived exertion (RPE) on a 1-10 scale following the exercise session. Paired-sa

Supervised exercise program improves aerobic fitness in patients awaiting abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

BACKGROUND: Aerobic fitness is an important predictor of postoperative outcome in major surgery. In this study, we assess the effects of a period of preoperative exercise on aerobic fitness as measured by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in patients scheduled for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. METHODS: As part of a randomized trial, the first patients recruited in the intervention group were enrolled in a supervised exercise program of six week duration. Treadmill CPET parameters were measured before and after exercise preoperatively for these patients. These parameters were a

Maximal exercise performance-impairing effects of simulated blast overpressure in sheep.

Lung contusion has been identified as a primary blast injury. These experiments addressed a fundamental and overt endpoint of primary blast injury, incapacitation (performance decrement). Respiration, hemodynamics, and blood gases were measured in sheep undergoing incremental exercise challenge before and 1 h after simulated blast exposure of the thorax. Pathologic examination of lung tissue was performed after exposure and exercise testing. Blast overpressure was simulated in the laboratory using a compressed air-driven shock tube. Three levels of lung injury (Levels 1-3, 'Trivial', 'Slight',

Splanchnic Nerve Block for Chronic Heart Failure.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that splanchnic nerve blockade (SNB) would attenuate increased exercise-induced cardiac filling pressures in patients with chronic HF. BACKGROUND: Chronic heart failure (HF) is characterized by limited exercise capacity driven in part by an excessive elevation of cardiac filling pressures. METHODS: This is a prospective, open-label, single-arm interventional study in chronic HF patients. Eligible patients had a wedge pressure ≥15 mm Hg at rest or ≥25 mm Hg with exercise on baseline right heart catheterization. Patients underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing wi

Impact of Menstrual Function on Hormonal Response to Repeated Bouts of Intense Exercise.

BACKGROUND: Strenous exercise stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary (HP) axis in order to ensure homeostasis and promote anabolism. Furthermore, exercise stimulates a transient increase in the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) suggested to mediate the anxiolytic effects of exercise. Athletes with secondary functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) have been reported to have lower BDNF, and a blunted HP axis response to exercise as athletes with overtraining syndrome. AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the hormonal and BDNF responses to a two-bout maximal exercise

Correlation between cardiac norepinephrine overflow during exercise and cardiac 123I-MIBG uptake in patients with chronic heart failure.

UNLABELLED: Cardiac (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine ((123)I-MIBG) uptake is reduced in chronic heart failure, and its reduction is reported to relate to the decrease in exercise capacity. Reduced (123)I-MIBG uptake may predict an inadequately reduced adrenergic drive to the heart during cardiac sympathetic stimulation, including exercise. However, there is little information about the relationship between cardiac (123)I-MIBG uptake at rest and norepinephrine (NE) release during exercise in relation to the exercise capacity in the failing heart. The aim of this study was to examine whether cardi

Middle cerebral artery blood velocity is reduced with hyperthermia during prolonged exercise in humans.

1. In the present study we examined the effect of hyperthermia on the middle cerebral artery mean blood velocity (MCA V(mean)) during prolonged exercise. We predicted that the cerebral circulation would be impaired when hyperthermia is present during exercise and assumed that this could be observed as a reduced MCA V(mean). 2. Eight endurance trained men (maximum oxygen uptake (V(O2,max)) 70 +/- 1 ml min(-1) kg(-1) (mean +/- S.E.M.)) performed two exercise trials at 57 % of V(O2,max) on a cycle ergometer in a hot (40 degrees C; hyperthermic trial) and in a thermoneutral environment (18 degrees

Synthesis of Icariin-Zinc and its Protective Effect on Exercise Fatigue and Reproductive System Related Glands in Male Rats.

Background: Icariin, a traditional Chinese medicine, plays a protective role in the treatment of exercise fatigue. Zinc, a trace element, plays an important role in the reproductive system. Therefore, we aimed to synthesize an Icariin-Zinc complex (by chemical means) and verify its protective effect on exercise fatigue and the reproductive system using animal experiments. Methods: The icariin-zinc complex was prepared by the reaction of icariin carbonyl and zinc ions (molar ratio 1:3). The molecular formula and structural formula of the complex were identified and tested. Fifty-six rats select

Effects of exercise training on brain metabolism and cognitive functioning in sleep apnea.

Impaired glucose metabolism reflects neuronal/synaptic dysfunction and cognitive function decline in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The study investigated the extent to which exercise training (ET) improves cerebral metabolic glucose rate (CMRgl) and cognitive function in patients with OSA. Patients with moderate to severe OSA were randomly assigned to ET (3 times/week, n = 23) or no intervention (control, n = 24). Echocardiography and apolipoprotein ε4 (APOEε4) genotyping were obtained at baseline. Both groups underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing, polysomnography, cognitiv

A delayed diagnosis of catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia with a mutant of RYR2 at c.7580T>G for 6 years in a 9-year-old child.

RATIONALE: Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a rare but potentially lethal inherited arrhythmia syndrome induced by adrenergic stress. Due to the atypical clinical manifestations in early age, limited recognition and experience of pediatric cardiologists, and low awareness of the significance of genetic diagnosis in some underdeveloped areas in China, a delayed or missed diagnosis of CPVT in children is common and concerning. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-year and 3-month male child with recurrent exercise-induced syncope accompanied by convulsion was initially misdiagno

A Simplified Approach to Select Exercise Endurance Intensity for Interventional Studies in COPD.

Time to exercise limitation (Tlim) in response to constant work rate (CWR) is sensitive to interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is particularly true when the pre-intervention test lasts between 3 and 8 min (Tlim3'-8'). There is, however, no simple method to select a work rate which is consistently associated with Tlim3'-8' across the spectrum of COPD severity. We assessed 59 GOLD stages II-IV patients who initially cycled to Tlim at 75% peak. In case of short (<3 min, low-endurance) or long (>8 min, high-endurance) tests, patients exercised after 60 min at 50% or

Prediction of death or myocardial infarction by exercise single photon emission computed tomography perfusion scintigraphy in patients who have had recent coronary artery stenting.

BACKGROUND: Although practice guidelines do not recommend routine exercise testing of patients after coronary stenting, several small studies have suggested that stress myocardial perfusion imaging can provide prognostic information about future adverse cardiac events. We sought to determine if exercise nuclear testing provides independent prognostic information in patients after coronary stenting. METHODS: We analyzed the outcomes of 370 patients who underwent dual isotope exercise nuclear scintigraphy at least 1 month after coronary stenting and had testing between April 1996 and May 2002.

Effects of sinus rhythm restoration in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation: a clinical, echocardiographic and hormonal study.

UNLABELLED: The hemodynamic consequences of atrial fibrillation (AF) may lead to impairment of the left ventricular function and a reduction in exercise capacity. Studies on mechanical and neurohormonal remodelling in patients with AF are becoming increasingly important. The results could possibly enhance treatment strategies of these patients. The aim of this study was to assess changes in exercise capacity, echocardiographic findings and plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations in patients with non-rheumatic persistent AF, before and 30 days after successful cardioversion.
