A 27-year-old male developed diplopia and gaze limitation after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) due to an iatrogenic inferior rectus (IR) muscle injury caused by an orbital floor fracture involving Haller cells. Preoperative CT and MRI confirmed this injury. Intraoperatively, a fracture and soft tissue herniation were found and their reduction improved upward extraocular movement (EOM), although downward EOM remained limited. Although initial postoperative improvement was observed, at the 1-year follow-up, the patient showed overall recovery compared with the initial injury but declined from th

BACKGROUND: Deep neck infections (DNIs) are potentially life-threatening diseases that are mainly caused by odontogenic and peritonsillar infections. Although DNI has also been reported to be caused by foreign bodies, no review articles exist to date.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed for articles published between 2005 and 2025.
RESULTS: A total of 131 relevant articles were identified. Frequently reported foreign bodies included injectable materials used in facial filler and fish bone. The latency to symptom onset varied widely, ranging from within 1 h a

RATIONALE: Dentinogenic ghost cell tumors (DGCTs) are rare odontogenic neoplasms constituting the solid variant of calcifying odontogenic cysts. Predominantly observed in adults, DGCTs are exceptionally rare in pediatric patients. This case report aims to contribute to the limited literature by presenting the clinical, radiographic, and histopathological findings of a pediatric patient with a DGCT and emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 14-year-old male presented with facial asymmetry in the left mandible.
DIAGNOSES: Diagnostic imaging revealed a multilocular r

Skull base osteomyelitis represents a rare but potentially fatal complication of malignant otitis externa (MOE), predominantly affecting elderly patients with diabetes or immunosuppression, and may also occur in individuals with a history of head and neck radiotherapy. We report the case of a 79-year-old female with poorly controlled diabetes and a remote history of undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx (UCNT) treated with radiotherapy 17 years prior, who neglected chronic, fluctuating otalgia. She presented with massive left-sided otorrhagia complicated by hemorrhagic shock and a left

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital malformations of the skull and face (craniofacial). The deformity is characterized by a loss of integrity of the lip muscles, alveolar bone, and hard and soft palate. The severity of the deformity can range from a small hole in the lip to a large fissure extending into the roof of the mouth and nose. Management and control of cleft patients is a challenge. Intervention in these patients begins very early in life, from the fetal period, and continues into adulthood, and the patient's relatives are always involved in the treatment process

Skull base meningiomas, although histologically benign, can exhibit locally aggressive behavior, particularly when arising from the sphenoid wing. Their potential to infiltrate bone and extend extracranially into the orbit, infratemporal fossa, and facial soft tissues significantly increases surgical complexity and recurrence risk. Complete resection in these cases requires wide anatomical exposure and multidisciplinary planning to preserve critical neurovascular structures while achieving oncologic control. We present the case of a woman with a recurrent sphenoid wing meningioma extending int

An early diagnosis of Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome is crucial due to its high neonatal lethality and the potential for autonomic dysfunction in children. Herein, we describe a patient with a late-onset, arthrogryposis-like phenotype form of Stüve-Wiedemann syndrome. While most cases result in neonatal complications, our patient only presented with camptodactyly, ulnar deviation of the wrist, and minor facial features at birth, resembling an arthrogryposis-like phenotype. The condition went undiagnosed until adolescence when noticeable gait and posture abnormalities emerged. Clinical and radiologic

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) was subsequently identified as the cause of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). While oral manifestations of this disease have been documented, they remain poorly described in the literature. We present the case of a 32-year-old patient who exhibited facial and oral swelling in the upper jaw. Pathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma, with immunohistochemical staining revealing HTLV-1 positivity. Following further diagnostic evaluation, the patient was classified as having stage IV HTLV-1-positive adult T-cell lymphoma. The

Oral and maxillofacial diseases have an important impact on local function, facial appearance, and general health. As a multifunctional platform, hydrogels are widely used in the biomedical field due to their excellent physicochemical properties. In recent years, a large number of studies have been conducted to adapt hydrogels to the complex oral and maxillofacial environment by modulating their pore size, swelling, degradability, stimulus-response properties, etc. Meanwhile, many studies have attempted to use hydrogels as drug delivery carriers to load drugs, cytokines, and stem cells for ant

Differential diagnosis of bacterial osteomyelitis (BOM) and chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is challenging. Pediatric CNO can be diagnosed at around 10 years of age and when CNO cases involve only the jaw, it is difficult to make a diagnosis in a young child. A 3-year-old female developed CNO at the jaw alone. She presented with no fever, right jaw pain, mild trismus, and a preauricular facial swelling around the right mandible. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a hyperostotic right mandible, with osteolytic and sclerotic changes associated with periosteal reaction. At first, we suspe

Background: The persistent stapedial artery (PSA) is a rare congenital vascular malformation involving the middle ear. It is usually associated with pulsatile tinnitus and/or conductive hearing loss and can account for multiple risks during middle ear surgery. Case Report: we present a case of a 9-year-old male child with conductive hearing loss and persistent stapedial artery in his right ear, who was admitted to our ENT Department for hearing loss. During surgery, we discovered PSA along with congenital stapes agenesis and oval window atresia, as well as an abnormal trajectory of the mastoid

We report the case of a 54-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident due to loss of control of the vehicle on a viaduct. No other vehicles were apparently involved, except for a car hit by the motorcycle after it fell. A post-mortem CT scan (computed tomography scan) was performed showing complex head trauma with a subarachnoid hemorrhage and multiple skull and facial bone fractures. A forensic cinematic reconstruction performed by an engineer was needed to exclude other incident causes other than the loss of control. The multidisciplinary approach that included autopsy findings, a cinema

BACKGROUND: Among various anaphylactic conditions resulting in acute abdomen, mast cell activation disorders, although rare, are included in the differential diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 63-year-old Caucasian man who was brought to the emergency room with sudden onset abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, with breathing difficulty, and with facial swelling after quarrelling with an acquaintance. Computed tomography showed edematous and swollen intestines, consistent with splenomegaly. Physical findings included maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis. He also had a lon

A 2-month-old boy presented to us with bilateral microtia, left lower motor neuron facial palsy, micrognathia, hemivertebra, bifid rib, bifid thumb and absent/hypoplastic right-sided depressor anguli oris. He had bilateral external auditory canal atresia, although response to loud sound was present. Brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA) was advised at 3 months of age. Karyotype was normal. We diagnosed him as a case of oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum. Child was discharged on request by the family with the plan for bone-anchored hearing aid after BERA and plan for pinna and ear canal r

BACKGROUND: Nasal trauma is the most common facial injury worldwide. Prompt assessment allows for recognition of injuries requiring surgical intervention in the form of nasal bone manipulation. The literature is unclear to what extent patients undergoing conservative management subsequently require surgical intervention.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients presenting with nasal injury between July 2017 and July 2018 who underwent conservative and surgical management was undertaken. Re-referral and subsequent surgical intervention were documented.
RESULTS: In a cohort of 390

It is not unusual for the protruding premaxilla to attain an undesirable position after cleft lip repair. Such a premaxilla may lead to considerable problems in facial aesthetics, or oral functions, or both in early childhood. These abnormal premaxillas may produce difficulties in bone grafting and orthodontic treatment in late childhood. In such cases, surgical correction of the premaxilla in childhood is justified. From 2013 to 2018, 11 children, aged 2 to 11 years, had a secondary ostectomy of their premaxilla. A new stabilisation method (developed by us) was used to provide rigid fixation

We present a case demonstrating the performance of different radiographical and nuclear medicine imaging modalities in the diagnostic work-up of a patient with Lyme neuroborreliosis. The patient presented in late summer 2019 with radicular pains followed by a foot drop and peripheral facial palsy, both right-sided. Due to a history of breast cancer, disseminated malignant disease was initially suspected. Bone metastasis was ruled out by skeletal scintigraphy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the neuroaxis and a whole body 18F-FDG PET-CT was performed within 48 hours. The MRI revealed a stro

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) represents less than 10% of all salivary gland tumors, rarely occurring centrally in the jaws. Herein we describe the case of a 36-year-old female patient presenting a painless swelling in the right maxilla, resulting in marked facial asymmetry. Intra-orally it was observed a swelling covered by an erythematous and irregular-surfaced mucosa, affecting the gingiva and crossing the midline of the hard palate. Imaging studies showed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion with ill-defined borders, involving the right side of the maxilla and the maxillary sinus. Incisi
