Opisthorchis viverrini is the causative agent of human opisthorchiasis in Thailand and long lasting infection with the parasite has been correlated with the development of cholangiocarcinoma. In this work we have molecularly characterized the first member of a protein family carrying two DM9 repeats in this parasite (OvDM9-1). InterPro and other protein family databases describe the DM9 repeat as a protein domain of unknown function that has been first noted in Drosophila melanogaster. Two paralogous proteins have been partially characterized in the genus Fasciola, Fasciola hepatica TP16.5, a

OBJECTIVE(S): Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a complex heritable condition associated with impairments in multiple neurocognitive domains. Substantial heritability has been reported for DD and related phenotypes, and candidate genes have been identified. Recently, a candidate gene for human cognitive processes, that is, GRIN2B, has been found to be associated significantly with working memory in a German DD sample. In this study, we explored the contribution of six GRIN2B markers to DD and key DD-related phenotypes by association analyses in a sample of Italian nuclear families. Moreover, we a

This study addressed the basis for the intergenerational transmission of psychosocial risk associated with maternal childhood abuse in relation to offspring adjustment. The study tested how far group differences in individual change in adjustment over time were explained by differences in exposure to specific environmental risk experiences. Data are drawn from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Information on mothers' own experience of childhood abuse, offspring adjustment at ages 4 and 7 years, and hypothesized mediators was available for 5,619 families. A residuals scores a

OBJECTIVE: Until the current molecular genetic investigations, all available data concerning the genetic predisposition to Heberden's nodes are based on a single investigation by Stecher in the 1940s. There is controversy in the literature about the correlation between Heberden's nodes and generalized osteoarthritis (GOA). Our own epidemiological and clinical investigations support this correlation. Therefore, the question arises as to whether the remarkable inheritance described by Stecher is correct and whether Heberden's nodes can indeed be used as a genetic marker for GOA.

BACKGROUND: Meningioma, a tumor arising from the meninges of the central nervous system, is generally considered benign. Familial meningiomas are extremely rare, and the genetic basis of this condition remains largely elusive, especially in under-represented populations. This study investigates a family from Kashan, Isfahan province, Iran-an under-explored region in genetic research-with the goal of identifying novel germline variants contributing to meningioma development.
METHODS: Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) was performed on a family with multiple meningioma cases (n = 3). Bioinformatic an

INTRODUCTION: The Advancing Research and Treatment for Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (ARTFL) and Longitudinal Evaluation of Familial Frontotemporal Dementia Subjects (LEFFTDS) consortia are two closely connected studies, involving multiple North American centers that evaluate both sporadic and familial frontotemporal dementia (FTD) participants and study longitudinal changes.
METHODS: We screened the major dementia-associated genes in 302 sporadic and 390 familial (symptomatic or at-risk) participants enrolled in these studies.
RESULTS: Among the sporadic patients, 16 (5.3%) carried chro

AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate whether hospital-based home care was desired by the parents of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) under the age of 5 years and their general practitioners, and to identify the main expectations and obstacles to its implementation.
METHODS: This descriptive bicentric study in France was performed between November 2016 and November 2017. Data were collected by interviewing 57 families of children diagnosed with diabetes before the age of 5 years and the corresponding 30 general practitioners. The primary endpoint was the families' or general practit

The Partnerships for Families project is a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT), an evidence-based treatment (EBT) for families who are at risk of or have histories of child physical abuse. Across 10 agencies whose programs were supported by referrals from the mental health or child welfare system, individual providers were randomized to receive AF-CBT training ( n = 90) in a 6-month learning community or treatment as usual (TAU; n = 92) which provided trainings per agency routine. We recruited families se

PURPOSE: Three mutations, L159M, R166W, and H244R, in the VSX1 gene have been recently reported to be associated with keratoconus by direct sequencing in familial panels. In an attempt to confirm this observation, we surveyed the same mutations of the VSX1 gene for a white sporadic keratoconus case-control panel and a larger familial panel to test its association with keratoconus.
METHODS: A case-control panel, with 77 keratoconus patients and 71 healthy controls, and a keratoconus familial panel, with 444 individuals from 75 families, were surveyed. DNA from each individual was tested for th

A case-control study was conducted to investigate the role of a familial history of cancer in the etiology of childhood acute leukemia. The history of cancer in the relatives of 472 cases was compared with that of 567 population-based controls. Recruitment was frequency matched on age, sex and region. The familial history of cancer in each child's relatives was reported by the mother in response to a standardized self-administered questionnaire. A familial history of solid tumor in first or second-degree relatives was associated with an increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (odds rati

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a childhood malignancy originating from neural crest cells, which seldom occurs in association with other neurocristopathies. Owing to the rarity of familial NB cases, only a few linkage data are available and no mutations in candidate genes have been demonstrated up till now. Germline mutations in a small proportion of NB patients have been recently reported in the paired-like homeobox 2B (PHOX2B) gene, suggesting its role in NB predisposition. On the basis of this indication, we screened three Italian families with recurrence of NB and one family with occurrence of gang

Probands affected with eating disorders (ED) present a higher number of relatives affected with obsessive-compulsive disorders/tic disorders than a comparison population. Therefore, we hypothesized that ED and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) might share the same biological liability, and that a single major gene might account for that liability. We tested this hypothesis by applying a complex segregation analysis to 141 families of probands affected with ED (89 with anorexia nervosa, restricting and binge-eating types, 52 with bulimia nervosa). Given the hypothesized relationship between O

A splice junction mutation at the exon 2-intron 2 boundary of the carbonic anhydrase II (CA II) gene was previously shown to be the unique mutation underlying the CA II deficiency syndrome in patients of Arab descent. Fourteen Tunisian (Maghrebian) families with a history of osteopetrosis, renal tubular acidosis, mental retardation, and CA II deficiency were studied to test the hypothesis that the mutation, found in all 24 patients, derived from a common ancestor originating in the Arabic Peninsula. A filiation study permitted us to trace these families back to a common Arabic tribe that settl

American Indian youth substance use is a major public health concern. To date, there has been limited evaluation of American Indian youth substance use prevention programs. Evaluation of prevention programs is necessary to understand the aspects of programming that are effective or not effective. This mixed-methods evaluation focuses on select outcomes of a 3-year culturally-based prevention program located in six American Indian communities in the Rocky Mountain Region. The goals of the prevention program are to reduce binge drinking by 30% and increase community readiness by 1-point over a 5

INTRODUCTION: Informing the children living with HIV (CLH) about their disease (disclosure) is important from the perspective of disease treatment and overall psychosocial development. There are no published studies that qualitatively explored HIV disclosure-related issues among CLH in India. Our aim was to provide insights into the perceptions of informal caregivers of CLH regarding childhood disclosure.
METHODS: Children were defined as those aged <16 years. In-depth interviews were conducted with 34 primary caregivers of CLH aged 8 to 15 years old who were residing in West Bengal, India. T

BACKGROUND: Use of mobile information technology may aid collection of real-time, standardised data to inform and improve decision-making for polio programming and response. We utilised Android-based smartphones to collect data electronically from more than 8,000 households during a national round of polio immunisation in South Sudan. The results of the household surveys are presented here, together with discussion of the application of mobile information technology for polio campaign planning, implementation and evaluation in a real-time setting.
METHODS: Electronic questionnaires were progr

The current study filled significant gaps in our knowledge of developmental psychopathology by examining the influence of multilevel risk factors and developmental assets on longitudinal trajectories of internalizing symptoms and self-esteem in an exceptionally culturally diverse sample of rural adolescents. Integrating ecological and social capital theories, we explored if positive microsystem transactions are associated with self-esteem while negative microsystem transactions increase the chances of internalizing problems. Data came from the Rural Adaptation Project, a 5-year longitudinal pa

Inspired by Photovoice, a participatory research methodology, I WAS HERE was a photoblogging workshop in Toronto, Canada, for young mothers who, when they joined, were either homeless or had past experience of homelessness. A participatory qualitative analysis process was developed to support workshop participants in collectively conducting qualitative analysis on a selection of their photoblogs exploring how they view their lives. Five mothers engaged in the participatory qualitative analysis process to categorize their photoblogs into themes. Participants selected over 70 of their personal p

PURPOSE: To examine evidence of the continuity in abusive discipline across two generations (G1 and G2) and the role of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs) as protective factors.
METHODS: Data are from the Lehigh Longitudinal Study, a prospective investigation of the causes and consequences child maltreatment that began in the 1970s with a sample of 457 children and their parents. Data were most recently collected in 2008-2010 from 80% of the original child sample (N = 357) when they were adults age 36 years on average. Of those assessed as adults, 268 participants (G2s) were pa
