[Bacteraemia in a patient with a central venous line is not a reason for immediate removal of the line].

Fever and the presence of a central venous catheter is a frequent combination in (critically) ill patients, but has a low predictive value for catheter-related sepsis. Therefore, the immediate removal of a central venous line is often unnecessary, even if there is fear for endocarditis when Staphylococcus aureus is present. Recent studies have shown that the odds ratio for this complication is rather low.

Operative treatment of acetabular fracture during pregnancy: a case report.

We present a case of operative treatment of an acetabular fracture in a pregnant patient in her third trimester. The natural fear of causing harm to the pregnancy or fetus is understandable in such situations, but should not lead to withholding appropriate care. Successful treatment of these rare cases is possible with careful pre-, peri-, and postoperative evaluation of the mother and fetus by a multidisciplinary team.

A mixed-method study into quality of life for bladder cancer patients.

A diagnosis of cancer can come as a shock to patients, and the fear it engenders can have a powerful impact on quality of life, even if the prognosis is good. This research posed qualitative and quantitative questions to a group of patients, and revealed issues that might help nurses improve the way they care for and educate these patients to improve their quality of life.

Case study: seizure disorder presenting as panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Seizure disorders can produce anxiety that is almost indistinguishable from psychiatric disorders. There are few reports of adolescents with seizure disorders that produce fear. The first case of an adolescent female who presented with panic disorder and agoraphobia which was a consequence of seizure activity is reported. Careful diagnostic evaluation and correlation with video electroencephalography were important in distinguishing seizure activity from panic disorder.

Treatment of an overactive gag reflex: two cases.

Two cases are presented in which avoidance of dental work was caused by an overactive gag reflex rather than fear. Subjects were able to demonstrate increased control of gagging in the laboratory, and to complete a series of dental visits immediately after treatment and again at 6 or 12 month follow-up. Assessment and treatment strategies which were developed with these subjects are described.

Blood pressure response in hypertensive pregnancies treated with cortisol.

Thirty-two hypertensive gravidas were treated in the third trimester of pregnancy with intravenous cortisol to enhance fetal lung maturity before premature delivery. Blood pressure was measured throughout 24 hours of steroid therapy. No significant increase in maternal blood pressure occurred. Complications and precautions are discussed. Fear of steroid induced exacerbation of maternal hypertension is not a valid reason to withhold steroid therapy in hypertensive pregnancy.

A neuropsychological assessment of phobias in patients with stiff person syndrome.

A neuropsychological assessment was performed in 10 patients with stiff person syndrome (SPS) to determine whether their anxiety and phobic symptoms precede stiffness and spasms or represent a reaction to disability. No neurocognitive dysfunction was noted. Patients perceived fears and anxiety as realistic and caused by SPS rather than due to an inherent phobic neurosis.

[Typical ultrasonographs of primary abdominal pregnancy with surviving child (author's transl)].

The rare case of a primary abdominal pregnancy, developed up to the 29th week, is shown. Ultrasonographic pictures (Vidoson Siemens) of different situations and stages in the course of the pregnancy are demonstrated. Despite all fears, there was no difficulty in operating due to the location of placenta and fetus. So far the child's development has been satisfactory.

Increased c-Fos expression in lateral habenula during social transmission of negative valence in prairie voles.

BACKGROUND: Social learning is the process of acquiring social skills, new information, or associating negative or positive valence to a context through the observation of others and through direct social interaction with others. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder show deficits in social salience and reciprocal affective responses. Social learning implicates the basolateral amygdala (BLA), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and anterior insula (AI). The lateral habenula (LHb), a brain area renowned for its role in negative reinforcement learning, has not been yet exten

Simultaneous inhibition of cholinesterase and antagonism of histamine H3 receptors alleviates cognitive deficits and mitigates apoptosis in scopolamine-induced amnesia in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory deficits. Mounting evidence highlights the role of cholinergic and histaminergic neurotransmissions in the pathophysiology of AD. Hence, developing agents that target multiple neurotransmitter systems may provide improved therapeutic benefits. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of acute systemic administration of E100, a dual-active cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI) and histamine H3 receptor (H3R) antagonist, on scopolamine (SCO)-induced memory impairment in

Dawn of the dread: threatening cinematic virtual reality environments enhance general but not specific pavlovian-instrumental transfer.

INTRODUCTION: Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) exemplifies how Pavlovian-motivational influences modulate goal-directed behavior, yielding outcome-specific (specific PIT) and general (general PIT) transfer. General PIT is commonly interpreted as outcome-general invigoration and is sensitive to stress. However, human PIT research typically uses visual, appetitive procedures, whereas rodent PIT research often uses auditory cues, limiting translation. We tested whether cue modality, along with additional factors such as immersive threat contexts, modulates PIT, and whether virtual reality (V

Pelvic Power, Steady Steps: Association Between Pelvic Floor Muscle Function, Urinary Incontinence and Balance in Community-Dwelling Older Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is highly prevalent in older women and is closely associated with pelvic floor muscle (PFM) dysfunction. Impaired pelvic-trunk control may affect postural stability and increase fall risk. However, evidence directly relating PFM strength to balance in this population remains limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the association among PFM strength, UI severity and balance in community-dwelling older women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted including 92 older women aged ≥ 60 years. Data were collected prospectively between January

Effects of active action observation on cognitive, emotional, motor, and somatosensory outcomes in adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a prospective exploratory case series.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is a heterogeneous pediatric rheumatic disease characterized by persistent pain, functional limitations, and psychosocial difficulties that frequently persist despite optimized pharmacological treatment. Active Action Observation (AAO), which involves observing and then executing goal-directed movements, has been shown to engage mirror-neuron and visuomotor networks. This approach has shown promise in neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation, but has not been studied in adolescents with JIA. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, acceptability,

Risk factors for dental anxiety and cooperativeness in pediatric patients with or without oral habits (bruxism, nail biting, and thumb sucking).

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and fear can deter patients from visiting dentists and can deteriorate their oral health. In children, this can also affect their cooperativeness. No studies exist on potential links between oral habits and dental fear and children's cooperation. Moreover, predictors of dental anxiety and patient cooperativeness are controversial. Therefore, this study was conducted with the objectives of (1) evaluating associations between oral habits and children's dental fear and cooperativeness as well as (2) potential risk factors of dental anxiety, cooperation, and oral habits.
