Ascariasis causing small bowel obstruction in an adult female: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ascariasis is a helminthic infection of humans caused by Ascaris lumbricoides. Intestinal obstruction from ascariasis can result in a rare but severe and often fatal surgical emergency of intestinal perforation and peritonitis in endemic areas. There have been reports of ascariasis causing Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) in children in endemic areas but this phenomenon has not been studied in adults. The objective of this study was to describe the case of ascariasis causing SBO in a 25-year-old female. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old female from southwest Ethiopia

Characteristics of enterovirus infection associated neurologic disease associated in a pediatric population in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Enteroviruses are a type of RNA-strained virus with more than 100 different genotypes. Infection can be asymptomatic, and, if any, symptoms can range from mild to severe. Some patients can develop neurological involvement, such as aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, or even cardiorespiratory failure. However, in children, the risk factors for developing severe neurological involvement are not well understood. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze some characteristics associated with severe neurological involvement in children hospitalized for neurological disease after

Kazachstania pintolopesii in Blood and Intestinal Wall of Macrophage-Depleted Mice with Cecal Ligation and Puncture, the Control of Fungi by Macrophages during Sepsis.

Although macrophage depletion is a possible emerging therapeutic strategy for osteoporosis and melanoma, the lack of macrophage functions can lead to inappropriate microbial control, especially the regulation of intestinal microbiota. Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) sepsis was performed in regular mice and in mice with clodronate-induced macrophage depletion. Macrophage depletion significantly increased the mortality and severity of sepsis-CLP mice, partly through the increased fecal Ascomycota, especially Kazachstania pintolopesii, with polymicrobialbacteremia (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Entero

A high-sucrose diet causes microbiota composition shift and promotes the susceptibility of mice to Salmonella Typhimurium infection.

A westernized diet characterized by high fat and sugar is tightly associated with the development of metabolic diseases and inflammatory bowel disease. Although a high-fat diet has been extensively studied for its involvement in various diseases, fewer studies have examined the impact of a high-sugar diet on the development of certain diseases, particularly enteric infections. This study aimed to explore the effect of a high sucrose diet on Salmonella Typhimurium-induced infection. C57BL/6 mice received a normal diet (Control) or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for eight weeks and then were infected

Potentials of orally supplemented selenium-enriched Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus to mitigate the lead induced liver and intestinal tract injury.

Lead is a metal that exists naturally in the Earth's crust and is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. The alleviation of lead toxicity is important to keep human health under lead exposure. Biosynthesized selenium nanoparticle (SeNPs) and selenium-enriched Lactobacillus rhamnosus SHA113 (Se-LRS) were developed in this study, and their potentials in alleviating lead-induced injury to the liver and intestinal tract were evaluated in mice by oral administration for 4 weeks. As results, oral intake of lead acetate (150 mg/kg body weight per day) caused more than 50 times and 100 times lead acc

The fungicide prothioconazole and its metabolite prothioconazole-desthio disturbed the liver-gut axis in mice.

The triazole fungicide prothioconazole (PTC) can cause adverse effects in animals, and its main metabolite prothioconazole-desthio (PTC-d) is even much more harmful. However, the toxic effects of PTC and PTC-d on the liver-gut axis of mice are still unknown. In the present experiment, we found that oral exposure to PTC and PTC-d increased total bile acids (TBAs) levels in the serum, liver, and feces. Correspondingly, the transcription of genes involved in bile acids (BAs) disposition was significantly influenced by PTC or PTC-d exposure. Furthermore, the BAs composition of serum BAs was analyz

Can food matrices be considered as a potential carrier for COVID-19?

Humanity is currently facing a life-threatening challenge from the infectious and epidemic disease SARS-CoV-2. To date, the various modes of transmission of the virus have not been fully elucidated. In this regard, there is a possibility of transmission of the virus through food products. The COVID-19 pandemic disease, like those associated with SARS and MERS, is transmitted mainly through the respiratory tract and airborne aerosol particles, but the presence of fragments of the genetic virus (RNA) in the feces of numerous patients proposes that their fecal-oral pathway may be expanded. In add

When Changing the Hay Makes a Difference: A Series of Case Reports.

Dry hay (composed of grass, legumes, or a mixture of the two) provides the primary source of alimentary fiber in stabled horses with limited access to fresh pasture. However, hay can also give rise to health problems in the horse, depending on the quality and quantity of its components. Pathologies may be rooted in biological problems, such as inadequate digestion disturbances, or reflect mechanical difficulties-for example, due to the presence of sharp plant parts that irritate the oral mucosa, or due to physical intake problems that inhibit consumption. Unwanted plants in the hay may cause s

Bacteroides acidifaciens in the gut plays a protective role against CD95-mediated liver injury.

The intestinal flora plays an important role in the development of many human and animal diseases. Microbiome association studies revealed the potential regulatory function of intestinal bacteria in many liver diseases, such as autoimmune hepatitis, viral hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis. However, the key intestinal bacterial strains that affect pathological liver injury and the underlying functional mechanisms remain unclear. We found that the gut microbiota from gentamycin (Gen)-treated mice significantly alleviated concanavalin A (ConA)-induced liver injury compared to vancomycin (Van)-tre

Impact of Gut Microbiota on Radiation-Associated Cognitive Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation in Mice.

Radiation-induced brain injury is a common complication of brain irradiation that eventually leads to irreversible cognitive impairment. Evidence has shown that the gut microbiome may play an important role in radiation-induced cognitive function. However, the effects of gut microbiota on radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) remain poorly understood. Here we studied the link between intestinal microbes and radiation-induced brain injury to further investigate the effects of intestinal bacteria on neuroinflammation and cognitive function. We first verified the differences in gut microbes betwe

Beyond the gastrointestinal tract: oral and sex-specific skin microbiota are associated with hypertension in rats with genetic disparities.

Current knowledge of the link between microbiota and hypertension is limited to the gut. Besides the gut, oral cavity and skin are other locations where sodium chloride (NaCl) is in direct contact with microbiota. Although oral nitrate-reducing bacteria generate nitric oxide, which leads to vasodilation and lowering of blood pressure (BP), the skin excretes sodium via sweat glands and is an important site for sodium and BP homeostasis. However, knowledge on the contributions of oral and skin microbiota to BP regulation, is limited. Therefore, the current study was conducted to compare the trip

The mechanism and effects of remdesivir-induced developmental toxicity in zebrafish: Blood flow dysfunction and behavioral alterations.

The antiviral drug remdesivir has been used to treat the growing number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. However, the drug is mainly excreted through urine and feces and introduced into the environment to affect non-target organisms, including fish, which has raised concerns about potential ecotoxicological effects on aquatic organisms. Moreover, studies on the ecological impacts of remdesivir on aquatic environments have not been reported. Here, we aimed to explore the toxicological impacts of microinjection of remdesivir on zebrafish early embryonic development and larvae and

Antimicrobial-Resistant Enterococcus spp. in Wild Avifauna from Central Italy.

Bacteria of the genus Enterococcus are opportunistic pathogens, part of the normal intestinal microflora of animals, able to acquire and transfer antimicrobial resistance genes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible role of wild avifauna as a source of antimicrobial-resistant enterococci. To assess this purpose, 103 Enterococcus spp. strains were isolated from the feces of wild birds of different species; they were tested for antimicrobial resistance against 21 molecules, vancomycin resistance, and high-level aminoglycosides resistance (HLAR). Furthermore, genes responsible for va
