A call for structured mental health interventions in epidemic response: lessons from the Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda.

The Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Rwanda highlights the critical need to foster structured mental health interventions as an integral part of epidemic response strategies. This manuscript examines the psychological toll of the outbreak on individuals, families, and communities, with a particular focus on high-risk groups such as individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions, healthcare providers, and those grieving under disrupted cultural mourning practices. Drawing on lessons from past crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the paper advocates for targeted and culturally s

Application of lateral supraclavicular incision in unilateral thyroid papillary carcinoma surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The standard approach to thyroidectomy is a collar incision via the anterior neck, and the neck scar has always been a source of worry for patients. Acceptable wound cosmetology has become a focus for thyroid surgeons. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effectiveness and cosmetic results of thyroidectomy through a lateral supraclavicular incision. METHODS: 180 patients were randomly divided into two groups: a lateral supraclavicular approach and a conventional transcervical approach. The main outcomes included incision length, intraoperative blood loss, operative time, total drainage vol

Protein kinases in Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligatory intracellular pathogen that causes life threatening illness in immunodeficient individuals, miscarriage in pregnant woman, and blindness in newborn children. Similar to any other eukaryotic cell, protein kinases play critical and essential roles in the Toxoplasma life cycle. Accordingly, many studies have focused on identifying and defining the mechanism of function of these signalling proteins with a long-term goal to develop anti-Toxoplasma therapeutics. In this review, we briefly discuss classification and key components of the catalytic domain which are c

Malignant tumors of the liver in children.

This article aims to give an overview of pediatric liver tumors; in particular of the two most frequently occurring groups of hepatoblastomas and hepatocellular carcinomas. Focus lays on achievements gained through worldwide collaboration. We present recent advances in insight, treatment results, and future questions to be asked. Increasing international collaboration between the four major Pediatric Liver Tumor Study Groups (SIOPEL/GPOH, COG, and JPLT) may serve as a paradigm to approach rare tumors. This international effort has been catalyzed by the Children's Hepatic tumor International Co

Biceps brachii can add to performance of tasks requiring supination in cerebral palsy patients.

The aim of this study was to assess whether cerebral palsy patients can use biceps brachii for supination during movement tasks requiring supination and pronation. 3D upper extremity kinematic and EMG-data of 12 patients (mean age 13 y 8 mo ± 36 mo) were compared to 10 healthy age-matched controls. Significant difference in biceps brachii activation between maximal isolated pronation and supination in both groups showed that it is possible for CP patients to use biceps brachii for supination. Performance of reach-to-grasp with either pronation or supination showed similar activation patterns a

[A new focus of human paragonimosis discovered in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa): the case of the Lauzoua Island].

Fifteen cases of human paragonimosis were detected in Ivory Coast from 1974 to 1999. Since no further cases have been reported, an epidemiological survey was carried out in local health centers. The purpose of this paper is to described a new focus of paragonimosis discovered on Lauzoua Island. Clinical and parasitological examinations were performed on 17 patients presenting chronic cough, haemoptysis and/or epilepsy. Stools belonging to cats, dogs and pigs as well as river crustaceans were also examined to identify parasite eggs and metacercariae respectively. Paragonimus eggs were found in

Transgender HIV prevention: a qualitative needs assessment.

Although clinical experience and preliminary research suggest that some transgender people are at significant risk for HIV, this stigmatized group has so far been largely ignored in HIV prevention. As part of the development of HIV prevention education targeting the transgender population, focus groups of selected transgender individuals assessed their HIV risks and prevention needs. Data were gathered in the following four areas: (1) the impact of HIV/AIDS on transgender persons; (2) risk factors; (3) information and services needed; and (4) recruitment strategies. Findings indicated that HIV

On a failure to replicate: methodologically close, but not close enough. A response to hogben et al.

Williams, Brannan and Lartigue (1987) (Clinical Vision Science, 1, 367-371) reported that poor readers took significantly longer to search letter arrays for a target than did good readers. In addition, they reported that blurring the letter arrays leads to faster search times for poor readers and a loss of the significant differences between the groups seen with unblurred displays. In a recent attempt to replicate these findings, Hogben et al. (1996) (Vision Research, 36, 1503-1507) found no differences in search rates between good and poor readers using unblurred arrays, and no differences in

Diagnosis and treatment of male sexual dysfunction.

This paper presents a critical review of recent work on diagnosis and treatment of male sexual dysfunction. One recent advance has been a focus on low sexual desire in males. Hormonal disorders are relatively uncommon in such men, with family-of-origin and couple-dynamic issues usually cited in the clinical literature as major etiologic factors. Recent work on erectile failure has focused on differential diagnosis of physiological and psychological factors in erectile failure. To date, no simple differential diagnostic procedure has been identified, and a complex and expensive multidimensional

A multi methods study to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the psychological well-being of cancer nurses across Cheshire and Mersey.

BACKGROUND: Cancer nurse well-being is crucial for the delivery of high-quality patient care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, fear and anxiety negatively impacted nurse well-being. Understanding the factors contributing to well-being amongst cancer nurses is a priority, as chronic stress can negatively influence job satisfaction and standards of care. METHODS: A multi methods approach comprising a repeated measures survey (n = 69), semi-structured interviews (n = 29) and two focus groups was used. This enabled in-depth exploration of nurses' experiences over time. Following ethical approval, nu

Blood group antigens and malaria susceptibility.

Blood-group antigens are increasingly recognized as key modulators of malaria susceptibility. This review synthesizes current evidence on how erythrocyte surface molecules shape parasite invasion, cytoadherence, immune evasion, and disease severity. We focus on a curated set of systems, ABO, Duffy, MNS, Gerbich, Knops, Diego, and others, and outline their molecular mechanisms affecting malaria. Population heterogeneity, parasite-host adaptations/counter-adaptations, and clinical implications for risk stratification, transfusion safety, and vaccine design are also discussed.

Cytological features of central nervous system germ cell tumours and tumours of the sellar region.

Germ cell tumours of the central nervous system and tumours of the sellar region represent a diverse group of neoplasms. These tumours affect both paediatric and adult patients and represent some of the most common central nervous system tumours as well as rare entities. Diagnosis frequently relies on tissue sampling, and intraoperative consultation is often needed to guide surgical management. The focus of this article is to provide a reference for the intraoperative cytology of these entities. The cytological features of these tumours as well as their differential diagnoses are described.
