BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of cutaneous melanoma in Colombia is lower than in predominantly Caucasian populations, survival outcomes remain comparatively poorer. This disparity may be partly explained by the high proportion of melanomas arising in acral sites. However, no multicenter studies in Colombia have systematically compared the clinical behavior of acral versus non-acral melanomas.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical and epidemiological characteristics, as well as 5-year overall survival (OS), between acral and non-acral melanoma cases across six Colombian cities.

BACKGROUND: Vascular insufficiency is associated with the pathogenesis and therapeutic outcomes of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). While mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold potential for DFU treatment, further enhancement in promoting angiogenesis in the challenging DFU wounds is imperative.
METHODS: The differential expression of pro- and anti-angiogenic factors during both normal and diabetic wound healing was compared using quantitative PCR. MSCs derived from the umbilical cord was prepared, and the engineered MSC (MSCANG1) overexpressing both the candidate pro-angiogenic gene, angiopoietin-1 (

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a crucial complication of diabetes, as in a diabetic wound, each step of the physiological healing process is affected. This entails a more easily infectable wound, and delayed tissue regeneration due to the inflammation that occurs, leading to a drastic decrease in the overall patient's quality of life. As a strategy to manage DFUs, skin alternatives and wound dressings are currently receiving a lot of attention as they keep the wound environment "under control", while providing bioactive compounds that help to manage infection and inflammation and promote tiss

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State (HHS) is a medical emergency associated with high mortality. It occurs less frequently than diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), affects those with pre-existing/new type 2 diabetes mellitus and increasingly affecting children/younger adults. Mixed DKA/HHS may occur. The JBDS HHS care pathway consists of 3 themes (clinical assessment and monitoring, interventions, assessments and prevention of harm) and 5 phases of therapy (0-60 min, 1-6, 6-12, 12-24 and 24-72 h). Clinical features of HHS include marked hypovolaemia, osmolality ≥320 mOsm/kg using [(2×Na+ ) + glucose+ur

Chronic non-healing wounds tender a great challenge to patients, physicians, and wound care professionals. In view of the increasing prevalence of chronic wounds due to ischemia, diabetic foot, venous, and pressure ulcers, their appropriate management requires significant attention. Along with the basic techniques of medical and surgical treatments; an ideal dressing is essential for a speedy recovery and rapid healing of such wounds. Mechanistic understanding of chronic wound pathology will not only help towards future directions for an ideal dressing model but also to resonant advance resear

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The use of Lawsonia inermis L. (henna) for medicinal and cosmetic purposes is inextricably linked to ancient and modern cultures of North Africa and Asia. Literature and artwork indicates that Lawsonia inermis played an important holistic role in the daily lives of some ancient cultures, providing psychological and medicinal benefits, as well as being used for personal adornment. Although henna was historically applied to the hands and feet to protect against fungal pathogens and to hair to combat lice and dandruff, other traditional uses include the treatment o

BACKGROUND: Spin in the reporting of randomized controlled trials, where authors report research in a way that potentially misrepresents results and mislead readers, has been demonstrated in the broader medical literature. We investigated spin in wound care trials with (a) no statistically significant result for the primary outcome and (b) no clearly specified primary outcome.
METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Wounds Group Specialised Register of Trials for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Eligible studies were: Parallel-group RCTs of interventions for foot, leg or pressure ulcers publish

Dermal templates are well established in the treatment of burn wounds and acute nonburn wounds. However, the literature regarding their use for reconstruction of chronic, nonhealing wounds is limited. This study describes a series of patients with chronic wounds reconstructed with a commercially available bilayer, acellular dermal replacement (ADR) containing a collagen-glycosaminoglycan dermal template and a silicone outer layer. A retrospective review was performed of 10 patients treated for chronic wounds with ADR and negative pressure dressing followed by split-thickness skin graft between

Simian agent 8 (SA8) is an alphaherpesvirus that was first reported as a spontaneous natural infection in a captive baboon colony in 1988. It was first isolated from an African vervet monkey in 1958 and was classified as a simian agent. Simian agent 8 was later isolated from a baboon rectal swab specimen in 1969 and from an oral lesion in a vervet monkey in 1972. Restriction endonuclease analysis was used to identify the virus as SA8. In a 1-year period, 70 baboons housed in two outside 6-acre breeding corrals developed lesions principally on the genitalia and oral cavity. The incidence was th

The considerable strain that chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and pressure sores, place on healthcare systems worldwide is largely attributable to the intricate pathological microenvironment characteristic of these conditions, and conventional therapeutic approaches frequently fall short of desired outcomes, primarily because they cannot effectively disrupt biofilm barriers or adequately adapt to the dynamically changing pathological states involved. Hydrogel microneedles (HMNs) have by contrast emerged as a minimally invasive platform whose distinctive structural features and ma

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects more than 230 million individuals worldwide, with critical limb ischemia (CLI) representing its most severe and life-threatening stage. Despite advances in pharmacological management and revascularization techniques, up to 40% of patients with CLI remain unsuitable for conventional interventions, underscoring the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Cell-based therapies have emerged as a potential regenerative approach aimed at restoring microvascular perfusion, enhancing wound healing, and preventing limb loss. This narrative review critically

Non-healing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, burns, and pressure injuries, represent a persistent clinical challenge, affecting an estimated 2-5% of the global population and accounting for annual healthcare costs exceeding USD 25 billion. Their failure to heal is driven by unresolved inflammation, inadequate vascularization, and progressive disorganization of extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture, which collectively disrupt the coordinated cascade of tissue regeneration. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes have emerged as a potent cell-free therapeutic approach capable of addr

Background Lower limb amputations are frequently preceded by diabetic foot ulcerations. When these wounds are complicated by progressive bacterial infections, they can rapidly advance to moderate or severe stages, significantly elevating the necessity for limb amputation, reflecting in mortality risk. This study aimed to evaluate the perioperative mortality rate of major lower limb amputations between 2010 and 2024 at a teaching hospital. Methodology A retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records of patients who underwent non-traumatic major amputations (transtibial and t
