Bilateral optic neuropathy following prolonged linezolid use: A case report.

This report describes a case of bilateral linezolid-associated optic neuropathy in a 65-year-old woman treated for Mycobacterium abscessus infection and highlights the importance of early recognition and intervention. The patient developed progressive, painless bilateral visual decline after more than six months of linezolid therapy. Ophthalmic examination revealed optic disc edema (left greater than right), impaired color vision, and prolonged visual evoked potential latencies. Neuroimaging excluded compressive or inflammatory etiologies, while optical coherence tomography demonstrated bilate

Lipid metabolism dysregulation in late-life depression: peripheral metabolic disturbance, central lipid alterations, and dietary modulation.

Late-life depression involves neurodegeneration, inflammation, metabolic disruption, and psychosocial stress. Lipid metabolism has drawn increasing attention in this field. This review examines three interconnected aspects: peripheral metabolic disturbance, potential central lipid alterations, and dietary lipid regulation. Peripherally, adverse lipid profiles and lipidomic shifts correlate with depressive symptoms, cognitive decline, and cardiometabolic load. Mechanisms include inflammation, membrane remodeling, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Centrally, the disorder may invol

Dynamic diffusion-weighted imaging of intracranial cardiac impulse propagation along arteries to arterioles in the aging brain.

Intracranial cardiac impulse propagation along penetrating arterioles is vital for both nutrient supply via blood circulation and waste clearance via CSF circulation. However, current neuroimaging methods are limited to simultaneously detecting impulse propagation at pial arteries, arterioles, and between them. We hypothesized that this propagation could be detected via paravascular CSF dynamics and that it may change with aging. Using dynamic diffusion-weighted imaging (dynDWI), we detected oscillatory CSF motion synchronized with the finger photoplethysmography in the subarachnoid space (SAS

Enhancing biosensing of trace tau protein in clinical samples via emergence macroscopic directed aggregation.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder that poses a significant risk to human health and well-being. The high cost and invasiveness of neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis underscores the necessity for accessible early screening via blood samples. In this study, we developed an ultrasound-based strategy for emergent macroscopic that enhances the acoustic response enrichment of specific proteins by introducing functionalized microspheres. This customized macroscopic-directed aggregation method combines protein enrichment with specific fluorescent a

The neuroscientific basis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): From brain to treatment.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition resulting from exposure to traumatic events, marked by persistent psychological distress and impairment in daily functioning. Risk factors for PTSD include genetic predispositions, neurobiological factors, as well as psychosocial and environmental influences. Specific demographic groups, such as veterans, first responders, and individuals in high-risk environments, are more susceptible to developing the disorder. Despite growing research, there remain gaps in understanding the full pathophysiology of PTSD, and exis

Integrating virtual reality into multidisciplinary care for Parkinson's disease: A narrative review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms, significantly impacting patients' functionality and quality of life. Clinical exercise, as part of a multidisciplinary approach, is gaining a crucial role in PD management. Goal-based exercises, combining physical activity with cognitive tasks, external feedback and cues, motor sequencing strategies and dual-tasking may enhance motor learning processes and guide physiotherapy programs.Virtual reality (VR) and exergaming have also emerged as promising tools in PD rehabilitation, offering

Synaptic protein CSF levels relate to memory scores in individuals without dementia.

BACKGROUND: We investigated how cerebrospinal fluid levels of synaptic proteins associate with memory function in normal cognition (CN) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and investigated the effect of amyloid positivity on these associations. METHODS: We included 242 CN (105(43%) abnormal amyloid), and 278 MCI individuals (183(66%) abnormal amyloid) from the European Medical Information Framework for Alzheimer's Disease Multimodal Biomarker Discovery (EMIF-AD MBD) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). For 181 (EMIF-AD MBD) and 36 (ADNI) proteins with a synaptic annota

Cytomegalovirus: An undervalued biological parameter of cognition in schizophrenia.

There is growing evidence that the brain is not an immune-privileged area, with central nervous system (CNS) cells being susceptible to inflammation as the brain responds to infection. Among the myriad of pathogens capable of infiltrating the neural environment, cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been one of the most extensively studied. Notably, CMV has been implicated in a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SCZ). The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of CMV on cognitive function in SCZ. Our review covers studies that explore the i

Oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and the blood-brain barrier biomarkers on the brain response to spaceflight.

Prolonged spaceflight can induce physiologic and pathologic abnormalities in the central nervous system (CNS). Our knowledge of the adaptive and/or detrimental effects of spaceflight on the structure and function of the nervous system is limited. Substantial effort has been devoted to identifying and developing reliable indicators to characterize and predict CNS injury and dysfunction associated with prolonged exposure to major components of the space environment including microgravity, physiological/psychological stress, and radiation from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events

The partial upward migration of the laryngeal motor cortex: A window to the human brain evolution.

The pioneer cortical electrical stimulation studies of the last century did not explicitly mark the location of the human laryngeal motor cortex (LMC), but only the "vocalization area" in the lower half of the lateral motor cortex. In the final years of 2010́s, neuroimaging studies did demonstrate two human cortical laryngeal representations, located at the opposing ends of the orofacial motor zone, therefore termed dorsal (LMCd) and ventral laryngeal motor cortex (LMCv). Since then, there has been a continuing debate regarding the origin, function and evolutionary significance of these areas.

Tipping the balance between fairness and efficiency through temporoparietal stimulation.

Maximizing the welfare of society requires distributing goods between groups of people with different preferences. Such decisions are difficult because different moral principles impose irreconcilable solutions. For example, utilitarian efficiency (maximize overall outcome across individuals) may need trade-off against Rawlsian fairness norms (maximize the outcome for the worst-off individual). We identify a brain mechanism enabling decision-makers to solve such trade-offs between efficiency and fairness using separate neuroimaging and sham-controlled brain stimulation experiments. As activity

The contribution of the supplementary motor area to explicit and implicit timing: A high-definition transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (HD-tRNS) study.

It is becoming increasingly accepted that timing tasks, and underlying temporal processes, can be partitioned on the basis of whether they require an explicit or implicit temporal judgement. Most neuroimaging studies of timing associated explicit timing tasks with activation of the supplementary motor area (SMA). However, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies perturbing SMA functioning across explicit timing tasks have generally reported null effects, thus failing to causally link SMA to explicit timing. The present study probed the involvement of SMA in both explicit and implicit ti

Altered voxel-based and surface-based morphometry in inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and is a disorder of the brain-gut axis. Neuroimaging studies of brain function and structure have helped better understand the relationships between the brain, gut, and comorbidity in IBD. Studies of brain structure have primarily employed voxel-based morphometry to measure grey matter volume and surface-based morphometry to measure cortical thickness. Far fewer studies have employed other surface-based morphometry metrics such as gyrific

The Auditory Agnosias: a Short Review of Neurofunctional Evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To investigate the neurofunctional correlates of pure auditory agnosia and its varieties (global, verbal, and nonverbal), based on 116 anatomoclinical reports published between 1893 and 2022, with emphasis on hemispheric lateralization, intrahemispheric lesion site, underlying cognitive impairments. RECENT FINDINGS: Pure auditory agnosia is rare, and observations accumulate slowly. Recent patient reports and neuroimaging studies on neurotypical subjects offer insights into the putative mechanisms underlying auditory agnosia, while challenging traditional accounts. Global au

Is essential tremor a degenerative disorder or an electric disorder? Degenerative disorder.

Essential tremor (ET) is a highly prevalent neurologic disease and is the most common of the many tremor disorders. ET is a progressive condition with marked clinical heterogeneity, associated with a spectrum of both motor and non-motor features. However, its disease mechanisms remain poorly understood. Much debate has centered on whether ET should be considered a degenerative disorder, with underlying pathological changes in brain causing progressive disease manifestations, or an electric disorder, with overactivity of intrinsically oscillatory motor networks that occur without underlying str

Sympathetic activation in congestive heart failure: an updated overview.

Conclusive evidence demonstrates that the sympathetic nervous system activation is a hallmark of congestive heart failure. This has been shown via a variety of biochemical, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging approaches for studying human sympathetic neural function. The sympathetic activation appears to be an early phenomenon in the clinical course of the disease, closely related to its severity and potentiated by the concomitant presence of other comorbidities, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and renal failure. The adrenergic overdrive in heart failure

Approach to patient with unilateral optic disc edema and normal visual function.

In patients with swollen optic nerve head and normal visual function, optic disc drusen (ODD) is the most common diagnosis. The best tests for detecting ODD are funds autofluorescence and enhanced-depth imaging ocular coherence tomography (EDIOCT). After ODD has been ruled out, asymmetric papilledema should be assumed to be the cause and MRI of the brain and orbits with contrast and venography should be performed in all patients. It allows one to look for indirect signs of increased inctracranial pressure (ICP), optic perineuritis, and other inflammatory or compressive processes affecting opti

Default network and frontoparietal control network theta connectivity supports internal attention.

Attending to our inner world is a fundamental cognitive phenomenon1-3, yet its neural underpinnings remain largely unknown. Neuroimaging evidence implicates the default network (DN) and frontoparietal control network (FPCN)4; however, the electrophysiological basis for the interaction between these networks is unclear. Here we recorded intracranial electroencephalogram from DN and FPCN electrodes implanted in individuals undergoing presurgical monitoring for refractory epilepsy. Subjects performed an attention task during which they attended to tones (that is, externally directed attention) or

Neural Processing of Disorder-Related Stimuli in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Narrative Review of Brain Imaging Studies.

Abnormalities and alterations in brain function are commonly associated with the etiology and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Different symptom categories of AN have been correlated with distinct neurobiological patterns in previous studies. The aim of this literature review is to provide a narrative overview of the investigations into neural correlates of disorder-specific stimuli in patients with AN. Although findings vary across studies, a summary of neuroimaging results according to stimulus category allows us to account for methodological differences in experimental paradigms. Based

MRI techniques to measure arterial and venous cerebral blood volume.

The measurement of cerebral blood volume (CBV) has been the topic of numerous neuroimaging studies. To date, however, most in vivo imaging approaches can only measure CBV summed over all types of blood vessels, including arterial, capillary and venous vessels in the microvasculature (i.e. total CBV or CBVtot). As different types of blood vessels have intrinsically different anatomy, function and physiology, the ability to quantify CBV in different segments of the microvascular tree may furnish information that is not obtainable from CBVtot, and may provide a more sensitive and specific measure
