The relationships between adverse events, early antecedents, and carbon dioxide reactivity as an intermediate phenotype of panic disorder: a general population study.

BACKGROUND: Although adverse events have been consistently described to precede and potentially precipitate the onset of panic disorder, there is no information about their ability to alter the individual reactivity to inhaled carbon dioxide, a putative intermediate phenotype of susceptibility to panic disorder. METHOD: Seven-hundred twelve subjects belonging to the general population-based Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel underwent a 35% CO(2)/65% O(2) inhalation challenge test and interview-based lifetime assessments of DSM-IV panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, chil

Mental disorders and total mortality after 20 years in an adult general population sample.

BACKGROUND: General population data on associations between mental disorders and total mortality are rare. The aim was to analyze whether the number of mental disorders, single substance use, mood, anxiety, somatoform or eating disorders during the lifetime and whether treatment utilization may predict time to death 20 years later in the general adult population. METHODS: We used data from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, which includes DSM-IV diagnoses for substance use, mood, anxiety, somatoform, and eating disorders, for a sample of 4,075 residents in Germany who were 18-6

Individual differences in striatal and amygdala response to emotional faces are related to symptom severity in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common heterogeneous disorder characterized by excessive fear and deficient positive experiences. Case-control emotion processing studies indicate that altered amygdala and striatum function may underlie SAD; however, links between these regions and symptomatology have yet to be established. Therefore, in the current study, 80 individuals diagnosed with SAD completed a validated emotion processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Anatomy-based regions of interest were amygdala, caudate, putamen, and nucleus accumbens. Neural activity in resp

Utilizing a medical questionnaire to predict anxiety and depression in outpatients.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and depressive symptoms are seen in patients with anxiety and mood disorders but are also common in those with organic disorders. However, since physical symptoms are predominant complaints from patients who visit nonpsychiatric outpatient clinics, anxiety and depressive symptoms are often unrecognized. It is important for physicians to be aware of these issues concurrent with the physical symptoms. We therefore examined whether a self-administered medical questionnaire could identify anxiety and depressive symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 453 patients on their

Influence of 5-HTT variation, childhood trauma and self-efficacy on anxiety traits: a gene-environment-coping interaction study.

Environmental vulnerability factors such as adverse childhood experiences in interaction with genetic risk variants, e.g., the serotonin transporter gene linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR), are assumed to play a role in the development of anxiety and affective disorders. However, positive influences such as general self-efficacy (GSE) may exert a compensatory effect on genetic disposition, environmental adversity, and anxiety traits. We, thus, assessed childhood trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, CTQ) and GSE in 678 adults genotyped for 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 and their interaction on agorapho

Cannabis and Pregnancy: A Psychiatric, Medical, or General Population Issue?

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use during pregnancy may adversely affect the health of pregnant women and their fetus. Several recent surveys led in the US general population in the last decade showed an increase in cannabis use during pregnancy from 1.95 to 7%, with a 0.5% for medical-only purposes. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to investigate if an increased incidence might be due to a greater public acceptability after introduction of cannabis medical use or due to psychiatric implications and unmet needs. METHOD: 500 pregnant women (302 psychiatric patients and 198 healthy controls) were tested with the

Awareness under general anesthesia.

General anesthesia aims to eliminate patients' awareness of excruciating pain during surgery. Nevertheless, rare occurrences of patient awareness continue because the problem is not yet completely preventable. One study puts the incidence of awareness at 0.18% for patients receiving muscle relaxants and at 0.10% for patients not given relaxant drugs. Awareness experiences frighten patients and impact their implicit and explicit memories in ways that can leave a lifetime of residual emotional and psychological problems ranging from sleep disturbances, nightmares, and daytime anxiety that may su

Anxiety- and depression-related somatic symptoms and atlantoaxial disorders: potential mechanistic links and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depressive disorders often include pain, dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, and sleep disturbance. These symptoms may also occur in atlantoaxial disorders, but overlap does not establish a shared cause. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether clinical or mechanistic evidence supports an association between objectively defined atlantoaxial disorders and somatic symptom burden in people with anxiety or depression, while distinguishing direct evidence from inferences based on general neck-pain research. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, an

Adopting an INF-infused CBT protocol to enhance the wellness of Hispanic students in STEM majors: Results of a preliminary single-case design study.

Students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors struggle with various psychological problems that prevent them from persisting to graduation. There is a need for campus service providers to adopt a new approach to effectively address STEM students' psychological challenges; hence the appeal of the interactionist neurodiversity framework (INF), which focuses on students' choices, strengths, insight, and self-determination. Our study adopted an INF-infused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol in a six-session intervention to address the psychological needs of s

Association of healthy lifestyle and social determinants with depression and anxiety in elderly patients with chronic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The growing burden of chronic diseases in aging populations has made mental health a pressing public health concern, but the combined contributions of lifestyle and social factors to depression and anxiety in this group are still poorly defined. Mental health is essential for promoting healthy aging and sustaining a good quality of life in later years. However, the influence of healthy lifestyles and social determinants on the mental health of older adults with chronic diseases-whether considered individually or in combination-remains poorly understood. This study investigates th

Prevalence of food insecurity and its association with depressive and anxiety symptoms in older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico: A secondary analysis of ENCOVID-19 survey.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 infection has caused high rates of morbi-mortality in older adults (OAs). In addition, conditions such as depression, anxiety, unemployment, and poverty frequently contribute to this population being at higher risk of food insecurity (FI) during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of FI and its association with depressive and anxiety symptoms in Mexican OAs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This study involved a secondary analysis of the National Survey on the Effects of COVID-19 on the Wellbeing of Mexican Households (ENCO

Prevalence and correlates of depression and anxiety symptoms among out-of-school adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who are out of school are at higher risk of depressive and anxiety disorders compared to their school attending peers. However, little is known about the prevalence and risk factors for these conditions among out-of-school AGYW. This study examines the prevalence of depression and anxiety and associated factors in a community sample of out-of-school AGYW in Tanzania. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from an on-going cluster randomized controlled trial in North-West Tanzania was conducted. A total of

Possible role of mosaic mutations of neurodevelopmental disorder-related genes in bipolar disorder: Lessons from Kmt2c chimeric heterozygous knockout mice.

We recently found a loss of function mosaic mutation of KMT2C, a causative gene for autism spectrum disorder and Kleefstra syndrome, in a patient with bipolar disorder and reported that somatic mutations in neurodevelopmental disorder-related genes are increased in bipolar disorder by deep exome sequencing analysis. However, causal roles of neurodevelopmental disorder-related mutations in bipolar disorder, a qualitatively different mental disorder, are not known. In this study, we focused on a loss of function mutation of Kmt2c, that causes autism-like phenotypes in mice. To simulate a mosaic

Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Relation to the Use of Digital Technologies: Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are susceptible to mental illness and have experienced substantial disruption owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The digital environment is increasingly important in the context of a pandemic when in-person social connection is restricted. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to estimate whether depression and anxiety had worsened compared with the prepandemic period and examine potential associations with sociodemographic characteristics and behavioral factors, particularly digital behaviors. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional and longitudinal data from a large, representative

Factors associated with compulsive sexual behavior in a national probability web-based aged 18-59 years sample from Japan: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) involves persistent, repetitive sexual behaviors that continue despite efforts to stop, leading to significant distress or impairment in personal, family, social, educational, and occupational functioning. Most compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) research focuses on Western countries, leaving its characteristics in Japan largely unexplored. Although treatment-seeking behavior for CSB is documented in Western contexts, there is a need to understand this behavior in Japan to improve mental health services. AIMS: This cross-sectional study aime

Anxiety in youth with and without specific learning disorders: exploring the relationships with inhibitory control, perfectionism, and self-conscious emotions.

INTRODUCTION: Since early research on Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), their relationship with emotional issues have been recognized, although emotional factors have received less attention compared to the cognitive processes related with academic achievement. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate mechanisms that may increase vulnerability to generalized and social anxiety in youth with SLD, compared to their non-diagnosed peers. We examined cognitive factors (inhibitory control), personality traits (self-oriented, socially prescribed perfectionism), and self-conscious emotions (shame, g

Comorbid psychiatric disorders among older adult recovering pathological gamblers.

The proliferation of state lotteries and casinos has led to an increased participation in gambling and its associated problems. Older retired adults have more opportunities to gamble and available funds than other demographic groups. For these reasons, older adults may constitute a special risk group for pathological gambling. Because substance misuse, mood, anxiety, and personality disorders are common in problem and pathological gamblers, we sought to examine rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders in 40 older adults with lifetime pathological gambling using structured assessments of known r
