Preconceptional stress and racial disparities in preterm birth: an overview.

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the evidence for three theories of how preconceptional psychosocial stress could act as a contributing determinant of excess preterm birth risk among African American women: early life developmental plasticity and epigenetic programming of adult neuroendocrine systems; blunting, weathering, or dysfunction of neuroendocrine and immune function in response to chronic stress activation through the life course; individuals' adoption of risky behaviors such as smoking as a response to stressful stimuli. METHODS: Basic science, clinical, and epidemiologic studies indexed in M

Stable structural color patterns displayed on transparent insect wings.

Color patterns play central roles in the behavior of insects, and are important traits for taxonomic studies. Here we report striking and stable structural color patterns--wing interference patterns (WIPs)--in the transparent wings of small Hymenoptera and Diptera, patterns that have been largely overlooked by biologists. These extremely thin wings reflect vivid color patterns caused by thin film interference. The visibility of these patterns is affected by the way the insects display their wings against various backgrounds with different light properties. The specific color sequence displayed

A prospective study of quality of life among women undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy versus gynecologic screening for ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the study was to prospectively assess quality of life (QOL) among women at increased risk of ovarian cancer who are undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) or serial screening. METHODS: Women at increased risk of ovarian cancer who were undergoing RRSO were recruited into the study. At-risk women undergoing serial screening for early detection of ovarian cancer served as a comparison group. Participants completed measures of QOL, sexual functioning, body image, depressive symptoms, and a symptom checklist at baseline (prior to surgery for wome

Local sensory cues and place cell directionality: additional evidence of prospective coding in the hippocampus.

In tasks involving goal-directed, stereotyped trajectories on uniform tracks, the spatially selective activity of hippocampal principal cells depends on the animal's direction of motion. Principal cell ensemble activity while the rat moves in opposite directions through a given location is typically uncorrelated. It is shown here, with data from three experiments, that multimodal, local sensory cues can change the directional properties of CA1 pyramidal cells, inducing bidirectionality in a significant proportion of place cells. For a majority of these bidirectional place cells, place field ce

Neural correlates of song complexity in Bengalese finch high vocal center.

Auditory neurons in the songbird forebrain nucleus high vocal center HVC) show high selectivity to the temporal structure of bird's own song but the relationship between the degree of song complexity and neural selectivity is not known. We investigated the song temporal selectivity of HVC neurons by multi-unit recordings in seven male Bengalese finches with different song complexity. Results showed that HVC multi-units of the individuals with more complex songs responded strongly to each of the self-generated song elements but were relatively insensitive to the element order, while those with

Differential effects of sound repetition rate on auditory cortex development and behavior in fragile X syndrome mouse model.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a leading genetic form of autism and intellectual disability that is associated with a loss-of-function mutation in the Fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (Fmr1) gene. The Fmr1 knockout (KO) mouse model displays many aspects of FXS-related phenotypes and is used to study FXS pathophysiology. Sensory manipulations, such as sound exposure, are considered as a non-invasive approach to alleviate FXS phenotypes. However, it is unclear what specific sound attributes may have beneficial effects. In this study, we examined the effects of sound repetition rate on audito

The social anxiety spectrum.

Social anxiety disorder is well suited to the spectrum concept because it has trait-like qualities of early onset, chronicity, and no empirically derived threshold that demarcates normal from clinically significant trait social anxiety. Social anxiety disorder has been shown to respond to relatively specific pharmacologic and cognitive-behavioral therapies, which makes identification of other conditions that may lie on the social anxiety disorder spectrum important because of possible treatment implications. Biologic markers associated with social anxiety disorder also may be shared by similar

Plateau Hypoxia Influences Mouse Circadian Behavior by Remodeling the Hypothalamic Transcriptional Landscape.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia signaling and the circadian clock exhibit extensive molecular crosstalk, but how endogenous circadian timing influences behavioral responses during high-altitude exposure remains incompletely understood. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia equivalent to an altitude of 6000 m. Wheel-running activity was continuously monitored under 12 h light/12 h dark (LD) cycle and constant-dark conditions to evaluate locomotor activity, rhythm amplitude, circadian phase, and free-running period. After 48 h of exposure, whole-hypothalamus samples were collected a

Remarkable concordance in associations between epigenetic clocks and health behaviors across three countries.

Research utilizing epigenetic clocks has accelerated in recent years, but it is largely unknown how consistently these measures perform across country and cultural contexts, and thus, how useful they are for understanding the large differences in health outcomes across countries. We assess epigenetic aging in three countries (the US, Ireland, and Northern Ireland) utilizing survey data from each country and evaluated how these measures are associated with three well-studied health behaviors (heavy alcohol use, smoking, and BMI). In general, we found remarkable consistency across these studies,

Fusobacterium nucleatum enhances amphetamine-induced behavioral responses through a butyrate-driven epigenetic mechanism.

Amphetamines are psychostimulants that are commonly used to treat neuropsychiatric disorders and are prone to misuse. The pathogenesis of amphetamine use disorder (AUD) is associated with dysbiosis (an imbalance in the body's microbiome) and bacterially produced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are implicated in the gut-brain axis. Amphetamine exposure in both rats and humans increases the amount of intestinal Fusobacterium nucleatum, which releases SFCAs. Here, we found that colonization of gnotobiotic Drosophila melanogaster with F. nucleatum or supplementing the flies' diet with the S

Dietary habits and genetic susceptibility: correlations between nutritional intake and genetic risks for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Dietary habits may impact the prevention and management of schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), and genetic and environmental factors can influence both these habits and these disorders. This study investigated the effects of genetic predispositions to SCZ and BD on current dietary habits among older adults with lifestyle-related diseases, potentially offering insights for preventive mental health strategies. A cohort of 730 older patients who were diagnosed with or suspected of having lifestyle-related diseases was assessed for eight current dietary categories: miso soup, Japanese t

Examining intergenerational risk factors for conduct problems using polygenic scores in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

The aetiology of conduct problems involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors, many of which are inherently linked to parental characteristics given parents' central role in children's lives across development. It is important to disentangle to what extent links between parental heritable characteristics and children's behaviour are due to transmission of genetic risk or due to parental indirect genetic influences via the environment (i.e., genetic nurture). We used 31,290 genotyped mother-father-child trios from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), testi

Role of nucleus accumbens microRNA-181a and MeCP2 in incubation of heroin craving in male rats.

RATIONALE: Epigenetic regulation has been implicated in the incubation of drug craving (the time-dependent increase in drug seeking after prolonged withdrawal from drug self-administration). There is little information available on the role of microRNAs in incubation of heroin craving. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the roles and mechanisms of miR-181a and methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in incubation of heroin seeking. METHODS: MiRNA sequencing was used to predict potential miRNAs, and miRNA profiles were performed in the NAc after 1 day or 14

The Change of Interleukin-6 Level-Related Genes and Pathways Induced by Exercise in Sedentary Individuals.

Sedentary behavior increases the risk of many chronic disorders, in addition, these chronic diseases are associated with elevated markers interleukin-6 (IL-6). Increasing evidence indicates that physical activity can prevent chronic inflammatory disease. However, the effect of exercise on sedentary individuals with disparate basal serum IL-6 level was not well elucidated. In this study, the gene expression profile of GES12384 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. This data set contained 12 sedentary middle-aged men (6 high IL-6 and 6 low IL-6 level), and their blood s

Assessing the acoustic behaviour of Anopheles gambiae (s.l.) dsxF mutants: implications for vector control.

BACKGROUND: Release of gene-drive mutants to suppress Anopheles mosquito reproduction is a promising method of malaria control. However, many scientific, regulatory and ethical questions remain before transgenic mosquitoes can be utilised in the field. At a behavioural level, gene-drive carrying mutants should be at least as sexually attractive as the wildtype populations they compete against, with a key element of Anopheles copulation being acoustic courtship. We analysed sound emissions and acoustic preference in a doublesex mutant previously used to collapse Anopheles gambiae (s.l.) cages.

Setd5 haploinsufficiency alters neuronal network connectivity and leads to autistic-like behaviors in mice.

SETD5, a gene linked to intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a member of the SET-domain family and encodes a putative histone methyltransferase (HMT). To date, the mechanism by which SETD5 haploinsufficiency causes ASD/ID remains an unanswered question. Setd5 is the highly conserved mouse homolog, and although the Setd5 null mouse is embryonic lethal, the heterozygote is viable. Morphological tracing and multielectrode array was used on cultured cortical neurons. MRI was conducted of adult mouse brains and immunohistochemistry of juvenile mouse brains. RNA-Seq wa

An experimental test to reveal negative side-effects of high treatability information on preventative health behaviour.

OBJECTIVES: When the course of a disease can be positively changed by health professionals the disease can be indicated as 'highly treatable'. This 'high treatability information' (HTI) may have negative side-effects on people's preventative motivation. This study examined the effects of HTI regarding skin cancer on preventative motivation. DESIGN: This study employed a 2 (high treatability (HTI) versus low treatability (LTI)) × 2 (high versus low susceptibility)-experiment with a hanging control group. (family) History and self-efficacy were assessed as moderators. Participants (N = 309) wer

Early Behavioral Alterations and Increased Expression of Endogenous Retroviruses Are Inherited Across Generations in Mice Prenatally Exposed to Valproic Acid.

Prenatal treatment with the antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) is associated with a significant risk of somatic anomalies, neurodevelopmental delays, and 7-10× increase in the incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in children. Rodents exposed to VPA in pregnancy show birth defects, deficits in neurodevelopment, and cognitive/social anomalies resembling those of ASD children. Mechanisms of VPA neurobehavioral toxicity are still unclear but as VPA is a non-selective inhibitor of histone deacetylases, epigenetic modifications are likely involved. This study was aimed to evaluate the tr

Beta-sheet assembly of Tau and neurodegeneration in Drosophila melanogaster.

The assembly of Tau into abundant β-sheet-rich filaments characterizes human tauopathies. A pathological pathway leading from monomeric to filamentous Tau is believed to be at the heart of these diseases. However, in Drosophila models of Tauopathy, neurodegeneration has been observed in the absence of abundant Tau filaments. Here we investigated the role of Tau assembly into β-sheets by expressing wild-type and Δ306-311 human Tau-383 in the retina and brain of Drosophila. We analyzed both lines for eye abnormalities, brain vacuolization, Tau phosphorylation and assembly, as well as climbing ac

International investigation of neurocognitive and behavioral phenotype in 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome): Predicting individual differences.

47,XXY (KS) occurs in 1:650 male births, though less than 25% are ever identified. We assessed stability of neurocognitive features across diverse populations and quantified factors mediating outcome. Forty-four boys from the Netherlands (NL) and 54 boys from the United States (US) participated. The Wechsler Intelligence Scales assessed intellectual functioning; the ANT program evaluated cognitive function; and the CBCL assessed behavioral functioning. ANOVA was used for group comparisons. Hierarchical regressions assessed variance explained by each independent variable: parental education, ti
