In this study ketoprofen has been shown to be the most potent of all anti-inflammatory drugs in inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins and the 'rabbit-aorta contracting substance' (RCS), using the guinea-pig lung preparation. Although there did not appear to be a close relationship between the activities of the various drugs in inhibiting prostaglandins synthesis and in their anti-inflammatory activity, the compounds were ranked in the same order in both test systems.

With the scanning electron microscope we have examined normal cochlear sensory epithelium of the guinea pig and cat and that damaged by noise. The studies demonstrate how the regular surface architecture of the organ of Corti is altered after exposure to noise. The changes include loss of sensory hairs, formation of giant hairs, and complete degeneration of circumscribed areas of the organ of Corti. Our method greatly reduces the artifacts.

Information about heart diseases and their treatment is still sparce for rabbits and rodents. Dilated cardiomyopathy seems to occur more frequently in rabbits, whereas in guinea pigs pericardial effusion is often diagnosed. There are still no available therapeutic studies for heart diseases in rabbits and rodents, and treatment is often extrapolated from dogs and cats. Consideration should be given to the off-label use of drugs, mostly not licensed in the species mentioned in this article.

Millions of households in the US own rabbits or rodents, including hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils. Activities such as hunting and camping also involve human interactions with wild rabbits and rodents. In many environments, feral rabbits and rodents live in close proximity to humans, domesticated animals, and other wildlife. Education of rodent and rabbit owners and individuals with occupational or recreational exposures to these species is paramount to reduce the prevalence of zoonoses associated with rabbit and rodent exposure.

The protective properties of artificial mycobacterial particles versus BCG vaccine were studied in laboratory animals with experimental tuberculosis. The findings of the decreased rate of a tuberculous process and on the increased mean life span in animals inoculated with M. bovis suggest that immunization of guinea-pigs with mycobacterial particles promotes the enhanced development of antituberculous immunity in the animals. The paper proposes a promising method for designing artificial immunogens, the high-polymer antigenic structures that imitates mycobacterial particles.

Experiments in guinea pigs and M. rhesus monkeys showed the possibility of contact infection of animals with Marburg virus. Secondary infection occurred most intensively when the monkeys were kept together but was also shown to be possible when the animals were separated but placed in the direction of the air flow from the sick monkeys as well as by "nose-to-nose" contact excluding the alimentary mode of transmission and the role of the agent excreted in the urine.

A preclinical study on safety of a new antialcoholic drug inmecarb was carried out on three species of experimental animals (rats, guinea pigs, dogs) receiving the drug at different doses including a subtoxic one (1/5 of LD50) for 6 months. The authors concluded that on the basis of a relatively low toxicity and the absence of specific toxicity and long-term side effects the drug may be recommended for clinical use as an antialcoholic agent.

Canadian farmers are using increasing amounts of herbicides. Often they do not use adequate skin protection. Two cases of severe allergic contact dermatitis due to the herbicide barban are described. Patch testing with various substances, including barban, confirmed the diagnosis. Sensitization studies in guinea pigs and in one of the authors showed that barban is a potent sensitizer. It is recommended that if skin contact with barban occurs the skin be washed immediately with soap and water.

The data on the study of the protective activity of theta hemolysin and Cl. perfringens lecithinase preparations and the corresponding antitoxic sera obtained by indirect immune affinity chromatography are presented. Experiments in mice and guinea pigs indicate that the injection of antihemolytic serum and immunization with anatheta hemolysin ensures the protection of the animals from theta toxin. The enrichment of analecithinase preparation with anatheta hemolysin has been found to increase its protective properties against Cl. perfringens culture and toxin.

The effects of vibration on the neurosecretory system of the brain were studied using the method of autoradiography. Both control and exposed to vibration (for 6 or 12 days) guinea pigs were injected with tritiated methionine and the uptake of the isotope was determined after 1, 6, 12, 24 h. Some differences were found in the number of silver grains in the brain neurosecretory system between the controls and both experimental groups. These differences, were however, not statistically significant.

Antibody to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was determined by the indirect immunofluorescence test in immune sera of guinea pigs and immune ascitic fluids of rats and mice. Among 135 patients with aseptic meningitis serum antibody was found in 11 patients in titers of 1 : 64 to 1 : 128 and in the cerebro-spinal fluid of these patients in considerably lower titers. By the indirect immunofluorescence test antibody in maximum titers was found early after the appearance of meningeal symptoms.

If, however, the animals were sensitized with horse serum either before, or along with the same pollen injections, they could then be shocked after an interval of 3 weeks with pollen extract alone. 3. The possible rôle of this underlying sensitivity is discussed.

To improve lower efficacy among infants in low income countries and the safety (e.g., rare but severe intussusception) of live oral rotavirus vaccines, we have developed CDC-9 strain with G1P[8] specificity as a candidate inactivated rotavirus vaccine (IRV). This IRV of 3 doses elicits high titers of IgG, neutralizing activity to homotypic and heterotypic human strains and IgG avidity in guinea pigs, thus is a promising alternative to enhance global immunization against rotavirus in children.

Coxiella burnetii, the Q fever agent, is an obligate intracellular bacterium and survival in phagolysosomes is an important virulence factor. The present study was performed to determine the relationship between its pathogenicity and genes related to its survival in macrophages, i.e. macrophage infectivity potentiator and Q fever agent regulatory sensor-like protein. The sequence similarity was more than 99% among Japanese, European and American strains, and no relationship was found between pathogenicity in guinea pigs and these genes.

In an experimental study on 36 male guinea pigs testicular torsion was induced in 10, epididymitis in 10, surgical trauma in 6 and only ether anaesthesia was given to 10 animals. Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels at 0, 4, 8, 20, 28 and 40 hours were determined in each group. Serum CPK levels were found to rise significantly in the torsion group. Determination of serum CPK levels may be an auxiliary alternative in the diagnosis of testicular torsion.

Cochlear damage immediately following exposure to continuous pure tones of varying intensity and duration was assessed in anaesthetized guinea pigs. Indices of damage used were elevation of N1 thresholds and severity of swelling of the afferent dendrites beneath the inner hair cell. The results were not wholly consistent with the assumptions of the equal energy principle. Longer duration exposures resulted in greater N1 threshold elevation and more severe swelling of dendrites than short exposures of the same total energy.

This is a study of the modifications caused by acetylsalicylic acid and CuII (aspirinate)4 in the speed with which phagocytized bacteria disappear from polymorphonuclears (PMN) of the peritoneal exudate of guinea pigs. Acetylsalicylic acid inhibits the normal processes that cause the disappearance of the phagocytized bacteria; CuII (aspirinate)4, on the contrary, at low concentration (5 10(-6)) and during the first 45 minutes, causes an evident increase in the speed of disappearance of bacteria from PMN.

Material from 50 patients with purulent otitis media was investigated. All patients had undergone surgical operation. The results indicate that anaerobic non spore-forming bacteria, especially gram-negative rods of the family Bacteroidaceae, may play an important role in the aetiology of purulent otitis media. In a further study, the pathogenicity of the isolated bacteria was investigated. For this purpose, guinea pigs were challenged by intramuscular injection of the organism. All of the isolated strains were sensitive to clindamycin.

Three strains of Soldado (SOL) virus (Hughes serogroup) were isolated from nymphal and adult Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) maritimus Vermeil et Marguet collected in and near nests of the Herring Gull, Larus a. argentatus Pontoppidan, on Puffin Island, northern Wales. Reciprocal complement fixation (CF) titration results demonstrated recovered virus strains to be SOL virus and antigenically distinct from other Hughes serogroup members. All isolates killed mice and guinea pigs, and 1-2 day old domestic chicks when inoculated intracerebrally.

Concentrated aqueous solutions of some β-lactam antibiotics were stored for 14 days. Samples were then subjected to gel filtration and fractions in the high molecular weight regions of the eluate were collected and lyophilized. The yields of materials from solutions of various β-lactam antibiotics were compared and the antigenicity of the materials was assessed by their ability to react with antibodies of benzylpenicilloyl specificity raised in rabbits and tested in guinea-pigs by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis.
