While service-learning is widely recognized within engaged education, it is frequently criticized for insufficient attention to justice and advocacy. This study presents the design and implementation of a justice-oriented, community-engaged global health module, exploring how student participation in advocacy fosters civic and global citizenship competencies. It addresses three research questions: (1) to what extent participation results in the development of civic and global citizenship competencies; (2) how students describe the processes through which these competencies develop; and (3) wha

Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Nutrition: A Narrative Review.

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in determining the health outcomes of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV), particularly those undergoing antiretroviral therapy. This narrative review explores the bidirectional relationship between HIV and nutritional status, highlighting both undernutrition and overnutrition as significant concerns. Evidence suggests that deviations from recommended dietary allowances negatively impact CD4 counts, body mass index, hemoglobin levels, and overall quality of life (QoL). Multiple studies reveal a growing prevalence of obesity among PLHIV, partic

Disparities in Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes of Peripheral Artery Disease: JACC Scientific Statement.

Disparities by sex, race, socioeconomic status, and geography exist in diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for people with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD prevalence is similar in men and women, but women have more atypical symptoms and undergo lower extremity revascularization at older ages compared to men. People who are Black have an approximately 2-fold higher prevalence of PAD, compared to people who are White and have more atypical symptoms, greater mobility loss, less optimal medical care, and higher amputation rates. Although fewer data are available for other races

Opportunities for Skin Cancer Prevention Education among Individuals Attending a Community Skin Cancer Screening in a High-Risk Catchment Area.

Despite the highly preventable nature of skin cancer, it remains the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. Recommendations for a complete skin cancer prevention regimen include engaging in photoprotection (e.g., sunscreen use), avoiding skin cancer risk behaviors (e.g., tanning), and receiving total body skin exams from a health care provider. The current study examined reported engagement in these behaviors among participants attending a community skin cancer screening (N = 319) in a high-risk catchment area to assess the need for increased health education on skin canc

Ectopic pregnancy: an 11-year review in a tertiary centre in the Niger Delta.

Ectopic pregnancy still remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in the first trimester of pregnancy and also a significant cause of reproductive failure in Nigeria. A descriptive review of 211 consecutive cases of ectopic gestation over an 11-year period was undertaken. Ectopic pregnancy constituted 9.5% of gynaecological admissions. In all, 86% were nulliparous and 62.6% were married. Abdominal pain and tenderness were the most consistent modes of presentation. Also, 95.3% presented as ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Induced abortion (72%) was the most common factor associated

Mental quality of life: an indicator of unmet needs in patients with diabetes.

This exploratory study investigates the quality of life needs of 173 individuals being treated for type 2 diabetes over a six month period of time. It samples patients whose primary care providers practice the most current model for delivering care, diabetes disease management. These physicians utilized a multidisciplinary diabetes education program to facilitate the patient-provider knowledge-based partnership essential in discase management. Patient quality of life changes were measured by the SF-36. A paired samples t-test showed significant diminishment in patients' mental quality of life

Blindness from misuse of over-the-counter eye medications.

Blindness from misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) eye drop preparations is reported. This is a previously unreported category of visual loss. Four eyes were blinded in three patients who used OTC preparations when they suffered angle-closure glaucoma. Another eye suffered a reduction in vision from 20/20 to 20/200 when the patient treated a subluxed lens implant with OTC preparations for three months. The motivating factors for self treatment by individuals are discussed. These include advertising, lack of education, and a desire to reduce the cost of health care. Since the common OTC eye drops

Educating family physicians to care for the chronically mentally ill.

More than 50 percent of the chronically mentally ill receive their medical, psychiatric, and social support services from primary care physicians in the general health sector. Despite this high level of involvement with these patients, the majority of family physicians consider their training in the management of patients with mental disorders to be inadequate. This paper describes six categories of critical competencies that should be included in the mental health curricula of family physician training programs: therapeutic attitudes and skills, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, functiona

Socioeconomic disparities in risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Despite a general decline in mortality rates in recent decades, these rates are substantially higher among lower socioeconomic groups. To determine target groups for preventive health promotion programs, the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease by socioeconomic group in Canadian adults aged 20 to 69 years was examined through comparison of estimates from the 1978-79 Canada Health Survey, the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey and the labour force smoking surveys of 1975 and 1983. Level of education was used as a measure of socioeconomic status. The risk factors considered were cigaret

Digital Media for Health Outcomes: Evaluation Study of a Massive Online Open Course.

BACKGROUND: Digital media has emerged as a vital tool for the rapid dissemination of public health information to vast audiences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media-based health communication kept audiences informed, encouraged health-seeking behaviors, and helped address rampant misinformation. However, the impact of these digital communications was limited by a lack of training in leveraging online advertising tools, behavioral insights, and marketing practices to target, test, and scale social behavioral communications for health. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted an urgent need for
