Ritshidze's community-led monitoring system as a source of information on health system responsiveness in South Africa.

Ritshidze is a large-scale community-led monitoring (CLM) system in South Africa, which has been conducting quarterly surveys of patient experiences at >400 primary healthcare facilities and community sites since 2019. This in-practice piece examines the data collected and publicly reported by Ritshidze, to highlight its role as an independent, complementary source of information on primary healthcare performance. It argues that CLM has significant potential to enhance health system responsiveness. We provide an overview of the data collection system, involving close to 500 data points organis

Natural history study of Pseudoachondroplasia: A focus on oral health.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) is a rare dwarfing condition characterized by short limbs and fingers, and multiple skeletal abnormalities/complications. There are few natural history studies delineating the medical problems in PSACH leaving a gap in many areas, especially oral health. Our study aimed to obtain information pertaining to oral health and other health-related problems (pregnancy and childbirth, skeletal health, joint pain) in patients with PSACH. METHODS: To ascertain this information, an online Qualtrics survey was distributed to members of Little People of America, a

Explaining the continuing high prevalence of trachomatous trichiasis unknown to the health system in evaluation units: a mixed methods explanatory study in four trachoma-endemic countries.

BACKGROUND: We explored reasons for continuing higher-than-anticipated prevalence of trachomatous trichiasis (TT) unknown to the health system in population-based prevalence surveys in evaluation units where full geographical coverage of TT case finding was reported. METHODS: A mixed-methods study in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania was conducted. We compared data from clinical examination, campaign documentation and interviews with original trachoma impact survey (TIS) results. RESULTS: Of 169 TT cases identified by TIS teams, 130 (77%) were examined in this study. Of those, 90 (69%) w

Smoking Behavior and Wellness among Individuals in Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

Tobacco-related morbidity and mortality disproportionately affect people with substance use disorders (SUD). Encouraging overall wellness may support tobacco use cessation. We investigated relationships between wellness (health status, physical activity, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption), cigarette smoking, and smoking cessation among SUD treatment patients to inform clinical care. Cross-sectional surveys were conducted with 395 patients in 20 California residential SUD programs. Using multivariate regression, we examined associations between smoking status and wellness. Among smoker

State Medicaid coverage for tobacco-dependence treatments--United States, 2006.

Approximately one third of adult Medicaid recipients smoke. The Public Health Service, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services, and the Institute of Medicine recommend that health-insurance coverage be provided for tobacco-dependence treatments. In addition, a Healthy People 2010 national health objective calls for total health-insurance coverage for evidence-based tobacco-dependence treatments in all 51 Medicaid programs (objective 27-8b). The types of tobacco-dependence treatments covered by Medicaid have been reported periodically from surveys conducted by the Center for Health and
