Cochlear Glucocorticoid Receptor and Serum Corticosterone Expression in a Rodent Model of Noise-induced Hearing Loss: Comparison of Timing of Dexamethasone Administration.

Glucocorticoid (GC) is a steroid hormone secreted from the adrenal cortex in response to stress, which acts by binding to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors (GRs). Dexamethasone (DEX) is a synthetic GC exhibiting immunosuppressive effects in both human and rodent models of hearing loss. While clinical evidence has shown the effectiveness of DEX for treatment of various inner ear diseases, its mechanisms of action and the optimal timing of treatment are not well understood. In the present study, intergroup comparisons were conducted based on the time point of treatment with DEX: (1) pretreatm

Benefits of incorporating the adaptive dynamic range optimization amplification scheme into an assistive listening device for people with mild or moderate hearing loss.

This study investigated whether a self-designed assistive listening device (ALD) that incorporates an adaptive dynamic range optimization (ADRO) amplification strategy can surpass a commercially available monaurally worn linear ALD, SM100. Both subjective and objective measurements were implemented. Mandarin Hearing-In-Noise Test (MHINT) scores were the objective measurement, whereas participant satisfaction was the subjective measurement. The comparison was performed in a mixed design (i.e., subjects' hearing status being mild or moderate, quiet versus noisy, and linear versus ADRO scheme). T

Prescriptive amplification recommendations for hearing losses with a conductive component and their impact on the required maximum power output: an update with accompanying clinical explanation.

BACKGROUND: Hearing aid prescriptive recommendations for hearing losses having a conductive component have received less clinical and research interest than for losses of a sensorineural nature; as a result, much variation remains among current prescriptive methods in their recommendations for conductive and mixed hearing losses (Johnson and Dillon, 2011). PURPOSE: The primary intent of this brief clinical note is to demonstrate differences between two algebraically equivalent expressions of hearing loss, which have been approaches used historically to generate a prescription for hearing loss

Polymorphisms in genes encoding aquaporins 4 and 5 and estrogen receptor α in patients with Ménière's disease and sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

AIMS: The etiologies of Ménière's disease and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) remain unclear. The homeostasis of the water and blood circulation in the inner ear is essential for maintaining its hearing and equilibrium functions, and aquaporins and estrogen are involved in the fluid or ion balance in the inner ear. We investigated the associations between genetic polymorphisms in aquaporin 4 (AQP4, rs2075575), aquaporin 5 (AQP5, rs3736309), and estrogen receptor α (ERα1, rs2234693; ERα2, rs9340799) and susceptibility to Ménière's disease or SSNHL. MAIN METHODS: We compare

The contribution of the mitochondrial COI/tRNA(Ser(UCN)) gene mutations to non-syndromic and aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss in Polish patients.

Mutations in mitochondrial DNA have been implicated in both, non-syndromic and aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. In the present study, we have performed the systematic mutation screening of the COI/tRNA(Ser(UCN)) genes in 250 unrelated Polish subjects with hearing impairment. Three different homoplasmic sequence variants were identified, including one common polymorphism m.7476 C>T in tRNA(Ser(UCN)) and two mutations, m.7444 G>A and m.7445 A>G localized in the COI/precursor of tRNA(Ser(UCN)). The incidence of m.7444 G>A substitution was estimated at 1.6% (4/250), however variable penetrance

Temporal bone histopathology in a case of sensorineural hearing loss caused by superficial siderosis of the central nervous system and treated by cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histopathology of the temporal bones of a patient with documented superficial siderosis of the central nervous system who underwent right cochlear implantation six years before death. BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is due to chronic or repeated subarachnoid hemorrhage and results in sensorineural deafness in 95% of affected individuals in addition to other neurologic findings. The deposition of hemosiderin in the meninges and around cranial nerves is thought to be causative. There have been no previous reports of temporal bone pathol

The effect of noise-induced sloping high-frequency hearing loss on the gap-response in the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex of guinea pigs.

Gap detection has been used as an evaluation tool for temporal processing in subjects with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). However, the results from other reports are varied making it difficult to clearly define the impact of SNHL on the temporal processing ability of the auditory system. Specifically, we do not know if and how a high-frequency hearing loss impacts, presumably through off-channel interaction, the temporal processing in low-frequency channels where hearing sensitivity is virtually normal. In this experiment, gap-evoked responses in a low-frequency band (0.5-8 kHz) were recor

The coexistence of mitochondrial ND6 T14484C and 12S rRNA A1555G mutations in a Chinese family with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy and hearing loss.

We report here the clinical, genetic and molecular characterization of one three-generation Han Chinese family with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and hearing loss. Four of 14 matrilineal relatives exhibited the moderate central vision loss at the average age of 12.5 years. Of these, one subject exhibited both LHON and mild hearing impairment. Sequence analysis of the complete mitochondrial genomes in the pedigree showed the presence of homoplasmic LHON-associated ND6 T14484C mutation, deafness-associated 12S rRNA A1555 mutation and 47 other variants belonging to Eastern Asian hapl

Effects of age-related hearing loss on startle reflex and prepulse inhibition in mice on pure and mixed C57BL and 129 genetic background.

The present study examined the developmental course of the age-related hearing loss and its consequences on the expression of acoustic startle reflex (ASR) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) generated by white-noise bursts in 129S2/SvPas (129) and C57BL/6J (C57) mouse strains and their F(1) hybrids. Auditory brainstem responses (ABR), ASR and PPI were assessed at various time points: 6, 28, 41 and 94 weeks. Both parental strains showed marked ABR threshold shifts with age, with C57 mice having the most pronounced deficits. By contrast, the hybrids displayed only minor hearing loss with age. The tim

Is poor frequency modulation detection linked to literacy problems? A comparison of specific reading disability and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

Specific reading disability (SRD) is now widely recognised as often being caused by phonological processing problems, affecting analysis of spoken as well as written language. According to one theoretical account, these phonological problems are due to low-level problems in auditory perception of dynamic acoustic cues. Evidence for this has come from studies showing poor discrimination of frequency-modulated from unmodulated tones. We measured frequency modulation detection limens (FMDLs) in 16 children with specific reading disability (SRD group), 16 children with mild to moderate hearing los

Middle ear and cochlear disorders result in different DPOAE growth behaviour: implications for the differentiation of sound conductive and cochlear hearing loss.

Input/output functions of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE I/O-functions) give an insight into the compressive, non-linear sound processing of the cochlea. With an inner ear dysfunction a steeper I/O-function is observed. Due to the linear sound processing of the middle ear, one can assume that the DPOAE growth behaviour remains unaltered with a sound conduction dysfunction. If that is true, a differentiation between middle and inner ear dysfunction will be possible by using the slope of DPOAE I/O-functions as a means for assessing cochlear compression. In order to test that hyp

Auditory ossicle abnormalities and hearing loss in the toothless (osteopetrotic) mutation in the rat and their improvement after treatment with colony-stimulating factor-1.

Osteopetrosis describes a group of skeletal metabolic diseases of heterogeneous etiology and varied severity that produces a generalized accumulation of skeletal mass, the result of reduced bone resorption. Inherited in a variety of species including humans, the most severe forms are lethal. Among common features are progressive blindness and deafness of controversial etiologies for which there are no universally effective treatments. We have studied the auditory responsiveness and auditory ossicle quantitative histomorphology and temporal bone vasculature in the toothless (tl) rat, a lethal o

Burden and causes of hearing loss among different genders and ages in China: a secondary analysis of the 2019 global burden of disease study.

BACKGROUND: Reliable national assessments of hearing loss are essential for evaluating their burden and developing public health policies. However, a comprehensive analysis specific to China has been lacking. Therefore, to estimate the burden of hearing loss in China, we described the national hearing loss burden by severity, cause, gender, and age in 2019. METHODS: This study conducted a secondary analysis using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We provided national prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) counts by gender and age group, as well as the prevalence, c
