It was examined whether calcitonin (CT)-induced hypocalcemia could modify the pharmacological actions of kanamycin sulfate (KM). CT produced a dose dependent and long-lasting hypocalcemia in urethane anesthetized and conscious rats. In anesthetized rats, KM infusion depressed the indirectly elicited contractions of the tibialis anterior muscle (MC), mean arterial pressure (AP), heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate. CT did not influence the stability of the above parameters and slightly modified the neuromuscular depression of KM. In conscious rats, KM infusion produced spontaneous and complete

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes, evidence is mounting that vaping induces autonomic nervous system imbalance, cardiac arrhythmia, and potentially even cardiac arrest. The ingredients menthol, WS-3, and WS-23 are cooling agents that enhance the appeal of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) but bear unknown risks when inhaled.
METHODS: We systematically evaluated how these coolants influence the impacts of e-cigs on cardiac and cellular electrophysiology in mice and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, respectively. Mice were exposed by inha

Patients at risk of pulmonary hypertension frequently present for emergency orthopedic surgery. A right ventricular systolic pressure of 35 mmHg or above, calculated from a tricuspid regurgitant jet on transthoracic echocardiogram, is considered an appropriate screening test for pulmonary hypertension. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an elevated right ventricular systolic pressure detected on a preoperative transthoracic echocardiogram, on outcomes after emergency hip surgery. We undertook a retrospective, single centre, case control study of 98 adult patients who had a tra

IMPORTANCE: The natural history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is complex and may include progressive heart failure and severe left ventricular dysfunction. When disease progression is abrupt, however, other coexisting diseases should be ruled out. This may be difficult in the case of amyloidosis, which classically mimics HCM.
RESULTS: We present an example of severe clinical deterioration in a patient with HCM due to superimposed amyloid light-chain amyloidosis. A man in his 70s with a longstanding history of genetically confirmed HCM presented with rapid development of congestive hear

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA), a sudden loss of heart function caused by severe trauma such as blunt, penetrating, or other injuries, presents significant public health challenges due to its high severity and extremely low survival rates. Approximately 2.7% of trauma patients experience cardiac arrest at the scene, with an overall survival rate of less than 5%. The correlations of prognosis with various transport approach, such as hospital level with different distance, are yet to be clarified. Thus, we conducted this study to assess the association of transporting

Amniotic fluid embolism is an uncommon, but potentially lethal, complication of pregnancy. Because amniotic fluid embolism usually is seen with cardiac arrest, the initial immediate response should be to provide high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We describe key features of initial treatment of patients with amniotic fluid embolism. Where available, we recommend performing transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography as soon as possible because this is an easy and reliable method of identifying a failing right ventricle. If such failure is identified, treatment that is tailored a

Taurine-magnesium coordination compound (TMCC) exhibits antiarrhythmic effects in cesium-chloride-and ouabain-induced arrhythmias; however, the mechanism underlying these effects on arrhythmia remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of TMCC on aconitine-induced arrhythmia in vivo and the electrophysiological effects of this compound in rat ventricular myocytes in vitro. Aconitine was used to induce arrhythmias in rats, and the dosages required to produce ventricular premature contraction (VPC), ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), and cardiac arrest

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) intervention programs are currently not part of management in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We sought to determine the effect of CR compared with a specialized AF clinic (AFC) and usual care on outcomes in patients with AF.
METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective cohort study that was carried out using 3 databases: the Hearts in Motion database (2010-2014), prospectively collected data in an AFC (2011-2014), and a retrospective chart review for patients in usual care (2009-2012). Three care pathways were compared: (1) CR; (2) AFC; and

In the present study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were transplanted into the brain of rats following cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by three different methods: Direct stereotaxic injection into the lateral cerebral ventricle (LV), intra‑carotid administration (A), and femoral venous infusion (V). The three different methods were compared by observing the effects of MSCs on neurological function following global cerebral hypoxia‑ischemia, in order to determine the optimum method for MSC transplantation. MSCs were transplanted in groups A, V and LV following the restoration of spontaneous

OBJECTIVE: Hyperventilation is both common and detrimental during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Chest-wall impedance algorithms have been developed to detect ventilations during CPR. However, impedance signals are challenged by noise artifact from multiple sources, including chest compressions. Capnography has been proposed as an alternate method to measure ventilations. We sought to assess and compare the adequacy of these two approaches.
METHODS: Continuous chest-wall impedance and capnography were recorded during consecutive in-hospital cardiac arrests. Algorithms utilizing each of
