The effect of local heat and cold application on the management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and debilitating side effect among breast cancer patients, leading to impaired functional capacity and diminished quality of life. Although non-pharmacological methods such as local heat and cold applications are gaining attention, their comparative efficacy has not been sufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of local heat and cold applications on CIPN symptoms in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 96 breast cancer patients who de

A tungsten-based solar absorber with a strip-combined starfish structure with high photothermal conversion efficiency and low radiative heat loss.

We propose a tungsten-based broadband resonator capable of achieving near-perfect solar absorption with suppressed radiative heat loss. Across the entire solar radiation spectrum, the absorber exhibits a spectrally integrated total solar absorptance of 95%. Taking into account the thermal emission under an operating temperature of 100 °C, the photothermal conversion efficiency remains as high as 92-93%. Using particle swarm optimization, the initial square-based structure is transformed into adjacent and closely packed strip structures with multiple lengths to achieve enhanced solar absorption

Effects of a Capsaicin-Based Phytogenic Solution on Intestinal Permeability, Serum Amino Acid Concentrations, and Digestibility in Heat-Stressed Growing Pigs.

A Capsicum spp.-based phytogenic solution (PHY) improved the performance and thermal tolerance of heat-stressed (HS) growing pigs. Two trials were conducted to further evaluate the HS pig response to supplemental PHY. Trial 1: The effects on the serum concentrations of amino acids (AAs) and the gene expression of tight junction proteins in the jejunum and ileum were assessed with 42 pigs (Landrace-Hampshire-Duroc; 27.0 ± 4.5 kg BW). There were three treatments (14 replicates): pigs under thermoneutral (TN) conditions fed control diet (TN-C); and HS pigs fed control diet without (HS-C) or with

Light brightened aggregates extracted from by-products of kaolin raw material classification processes, used to reduce urban heat islands.

The process of urbanisation is resulting in increasingly dense urban areas. It is documented that cities and urban areas have significantly higher temperatures than the surrounding non-urbanised areas. Such a phenomenon has been well known for many years and is referred to as the urban heat island (UHI). The magnitude of this phenomenon varies according to specific local and geographical characteristics. It depends largely on factors such as vegetation (e.g. woodland, flower meadows) but also on land use and land cover conditions. The thermal properties of the materials used in the built envir

Multi-heat keypoint incorporation in deep learning model to tropical cyclone centering and intensity classifying from geostationary satellite images.

Hydrometeorological forecasting and early warning involve many hazardous elements, with the estimation of intensity and center location of tropical cyclones (TCs) being key. This paper proposes a new multitask deep learning model with attention gate mechanisms to work with satellite images and construct heatmaps for TC's centering and classification. The multi-head keypoint design (MHKD) with the spatial attention mechanism (SAM) is fitted to the decoder layer using multi-resolution inputs from the encoder. In addition, the new loss function is employed with an Euclidean distance to guide cent

Cities as hotspots of compound heat and fine particulate matter pollution: A 23-year urban-rural comparison across the United States.

Heat stress and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution are major stressors that threaten public health and environmental quality. When heat waves and PM2.5 pollution episodes co-occur as compound events, their impacts intensify, often leading to increased mortality and morbidity. This study provides a 23-year (2000-2022) analysis of heat waves, PM2.5 pollution episodes, and their compound occurrences during the warm season across urban and surrounding rural areas of the contiguous U.S. using reconstructed daily minimum air temperature and PM2.5 datasets. Results show that urban areas genera

"Heat-dissipating, lung-moistening, and constipation-relieving" effects of Siraitiae Fructus total saponins regulated through gut-lung axis.

BACKGROUND: Siraitiae Fructus (SF), a well-known medicinal and edible herb, is traditionally used for heat-dissipation, lung-moistening, and constipation relief. However, the active substances and mechanisms responsible for these effects remain incompletely understood. Our previous study has shown that Siraitiae Fructus total saponins (SFTS) are the effective components in SF. PURPOSE: To systematically investigate the multi-target mechanisms of SFTS and its characteristic compound, Mogroside V (MV). METHODS: A novel model of allergic asthma with comorbid functional constipation (AFC) and gu

Contact heat evoked potentials reveal distinct patterns of spinal cord impairment in degenerative cervical myelopathy beyond MRI lesions.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging may suggest spinal cord compression and structural lesions in degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) but cannot reveal functional impairments in spinal pathways. We aimed to assess the value of contact heat evoked potentials (CHEPs) in addition to MRI and hypothesized that abnormal CHEPs may be evident in DCM independent of MR-lesions and are related to dynamic mechanical cord stress. METHODS: Individuals with DCM underwent neurologic examination including segmental sensory (pinprick, light touch) and motor testing. The presence or absence of hyperintens

Hypo-osmotic stress is an anticipatory trigger of heat-resistance in presumptive extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from treated sewage.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are responsible for a variety of human infections (urinary tract infections, septicemia, meningitis) and can be routinely isolated from treated sewage. However, the phenotypic properties mediating treatment resistance in ExPEC remain elusive. Herein, we examined heat-resistance in presumptive wastewater ExPEC (W-ExPEC) surviving sewage chlorination or full-scale wastewater treatment. Interestingly, heat-resistance in W-ExPEC was triggered by exposure to hypo-osmotic conditions (i.e., sterile distilled water), resulting in a 10- to 1,000-fold

Assessing residual allergenicity in heat-treated red lentil flours through simulated digestion, in vitro and in silico assays and peptidome approach.

The increasing use of different legume flours (lentils, chickpeas, lupin, soybean) in food products, driven by their nutritional and technological properties, raises concerns for sensitised and allergic individuals. This study investigated the effect of thermal processing on the digestibility and immunoglobulin E (IgE)-binding capacity of red lentil proteins, using simulated gastrointestinal digestion models based on the INFOGEST 2.0 protocol. The protein profiles and the IgE-binding capacity before and after digestion were analysed using SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting with sera from lentil-aller

Incorporating an Afrocentric Approach into the Criminal Justice System: The Voices of Men Who Attend the Habilitation Empowerment Accountability Therapy (HEAT) Program.

PURPOSE: Treatment courts, such as drug court, have been part of the criminal justice system since 1989. While treatment courts have played an important role in justice reform, they have also been plagued by inequities where programs tend to be more effective for White participants than African Americans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first qualitative study to explore the experiences of African American men (n = 11) who are in treatment courts and participate in the Habilitation Empowerment Accountability Therapy (HEAT) program. HEAT is a curriculum-based t

Developing a framework to guide intervention planning to reduce heat exposure and poor air quality in school classrooms: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Poor indoor air quality and heat, individually and together, cause serious health impacts on children. Thus, there is a growing interest in creating school classroom environments that reduce health risks associated with these indoor environmental conditions. However, it is unclear if the existing evidence provides effective, practical and reliable interventions or strategies that can be implemented in classrooms. Additionally, the pertinence of these strategies for low-income communities needs to be elucidated. This scoping review will, therefore, document the findings of studies

The Joint Effects of Exposure to Ambient Long-term Air Pollution and Short-term Heat on Epigenetic Aging in the Health and Retirement Study.

Prior research has examined associations of exposure to air pollution and heat with epigenetic alterations separately; however, these 2 exposures commonly used to measure climate change typically co-occur. We examine joint effects of exposure to elevated PM2.5 and heat on DNA methylation. Data come from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study DNA Methylation Sample (N = 3 947) and census tract level annual ambient PM2.5 concentrations and daily heat index data averaged 7 days before blood collection. We used 5 epigenetic aging measures: Horvath, Hannum, PhenoAge, GrimAge, and DunedinPACE. Four ca

Alkaline-heat treatment Flammulina velutipes polysaccharides/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose biodegradable composite film for fresh-cut cantaloupe preservation.

As concerns about the safety and sustainability of plastic wrap grow, the development of biodegradable film for use in fresh-cut fruits and vegetables has become an inevitable trend. A biodegradable packaging material made of Flammulina velutipes polysaccharides (FVP) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was created using the solution casting method. We have enhanced the film-forming properties of polysaccharides by adjusting the pH. Through process optimization, the optimal parameters (pH 10, 6 % FVP, and 85 °C) yielded a composite film with superior properties: the highest tensile streng
