Multi-modal convolutional neural network-based thyroid cytology classification and diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The cytologic diagnosis of thyroid nodules' benign and malignant nature based on cytological smears obtained through ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration is crucial for determining subsequent treatment plans. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) can assist pathologists in improving the efficiency and accuracy of cytological diagnoses. We propose a novel diagnostic model based on a network architecture that integrates cytologic images and digital ultrasound image features (CI-DUF) to solve the multi-class classification task of thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology.

Automated Detection and Diameter Estimation for Mouse Mesenteric Artery Using Semantic Segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Pressurized myography is useful for the assessment of small artery structures and function. However, this procedure requires technical expertise for sample preparation and effort to choose an appropriate sized artery. In this study, we developed an automatic artery/vein differentiation and a size measurement system utilizing machine learning algorithms. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used 654 independent mouse mesenteric artery images for model training. The model yielded an Intersection-over-Union of 0.744 ± 0.031 and a Dice coefficient of 0.881 ± 0.016. The vessel size and lumen size c

Automated 4-dimensional regional myocardial strain evaluation using cardiac computed tomography.

Evaluation of myocardial regional function is generally performed by visual "eyeballing" which is highly subjective. A robust quantifiable parameter of regional function is required to provide an objective, repeatable and comparable measure of myocardial performance. We aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of novel regional myocardial strain software from cardiac computed tomography (CT) datasets. 93 consecutive patients who had undergone retrospectively gated cardiac CT were evaluated by the software, which utilizes a finite element based tracking algorithm through the cardiac cycle. Quality assurance and quantitative imaging biomarkers in low-dose CT lung cancer screening.

After years of assessment through controlled clinical trials, low-dose CT screening for lung cancer is becoming part of clinical practice. As with any cancer screening test, those undergoing lung cancer screening are not being evaluated for concerning signs or symptoms, but are generally in good health and proactively trying to prevent premature death. Given the resultant obligation to achieve the screening aim of early diagnosis while also minimizing the potential for morbidity from workup of indeterminate but ultimately benign screening abnormalities, careful implementation of screening with

The Diagnostic Accuracy of Contrast-Enhanced CT of the Neck for the Investigation of Sialolithiasis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sialolithiasis is a common benign pathology affecting the salivary glands but it is unclear if contrast-enhanced CT, which is commonly used for investigation of head and neck pathology, can identify calculi as accurately as noncontrast CT. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced CT of the neck in the diagnosis of sialolithiasis compared with noncontrast CT of the neck used as the criterion standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, case-control study of 92 consecutive cases in 90 patients who underwent both nonco

Assessment of airway response distribution and paradoxical airway dilation in mice during methacholine challenge.

Detailed information on the distribution of airway diameters during bronchoconstriction in situ is required to understand the regional response of the lungs. Imaging studies using computed tomography (CT) have previously measured airway diameters and changes in response to bronchoconstricting agents, but the manual measurements used have severely limited the number of airways measured per subject. Hence, the detailed distribution and heterogeneity of airway responses are unknown. We have developed and applied dynamic imaging and advanced image-processing methods to quantify and compare hundred

Quantitative CT indexes are significantly associated with exercise oxygen desaturation in interstitial lung disease related to systemic sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is the first cause of death related to Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). The ILD severity can be assessed with clinical, functional and radiological outcome. Nevertheless none of them is completely validated in clinical practice. Recently a new radiological evaluation based on Quantitative Computed Tomography Indexes (QCTI) was proposed on the basis of voxel-wise quantitative analysis of chest CT. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this study is to verify if QCTI can identify SSc patients with significant oxygen desaturation during the 6 min walking test. The di
