Deep learning-based prospective slice tracking for continuous catheter visualization during MRI-guided cardiac catheterization.

PURPOSE: This proof-of-concept study introduces a novel, deep learning-based, parameter-free, automatic slice-tracking technique for continuous catheter tracking and visualization during MR-guided cardiac catheterization. METHODS: The proposed sequence includes Calibration and Runtime modes. Initially, Calibration mode identifies the catheter tip's three-dimensional coordinates using a fixed stack of contiguous slices. A U-Net architecture with a ResNet-34 encoder is used to identify the catheter tip location. Once identified, the sequence then switches to Runtime mode, dynamically acquiring

Application of the limited-memory quasi-Newton algorithm for multi-dimensional, large flip-angle RF pulses at 7T.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrahigh field MRI provides great opportunities for medical diagnostics and research. However, ultrahigh field MRI also brings challenges, such as larger magnetic susceptibility induced field changes. Parallel-transmit radio-frequency pulses can ameliorate these complications while performing advanced tasks in routine applications. To address one class of such pulses, we propose an optimal-control algorithm as a tool for designing advanced multi-dimensional, large flip-angle, radio-frequency pulses. We contrast initial conditions, constraints, and field correction abilities against

Magnetocephalography: a noninvasive alternative to the Wada procedure.

OBJECT: In this study the authors evaluated the sensitivity and selectivity of a noninvasive language mapping procedure based on magnetoencephalography (MEG), for determining hemispheric dominance for language functions. METHODS: Magnetic activation profiles of the brain were obtained from 100 surgical candidates (age range 8-56 years) with medically intractable seizure disorder by using a whole-head MEG system within the context of a word recognition task. The degree of language-specific activity was indexed according to the number of consecutive sources (modeled as single, moving current di

Hierarchical Biclustering of Mouse Pancreas Mass Spectrometry Imaging Data Using Recursive Rank-2 Non-negative Matrix Factorization.

One of the main challenges in mass spectrometry imaging data analysis remains the analysis of m/z-spectra displaying a low signal-to-noise ratio caused by their low abundance, sample preparation, matrix effects, fragmentation, and other artifacts. Additionally, we observe that molecules with a high abundance suppress those with lower intensities and misdirect classical tools for MSI data analysis, such as principal component analysis. As a result, the observed significance of a molecule may not always be directly related to its abundance. In this work, we present a recursive rank-2 non-negativ

Cardiac-induced physiological noise in 3D gradient echo brain imaging: effect of k-space sampling scheme.

The physiological noise in 3D image acquisition is shown to depend strongly on the sampling scheme. Five sampling schemes are considered: Linear, Centric, Segmented, Random and Tuned. Tuned acquisition means that data acquisition at k-space positions k and -k are separated with a specific time interval. We model physiological noise as a periodic temporal oscillation with arbitrary spatial amplitude in the physical object and develop a general framework to describe how this is rendered in the reconstructed image. Reconstructed noise can be decomposed in one component that is in phase with the s

A feed forward neural network for classification of bull's-eye myocardial perfusion images.

Identification of hypoperfused areas in myocardial perfusion single-photon emission tomography studies can be aided by bull's-eye representation of raw counts, lesion extent and lesion severity, the latter two being produced by comparison of the raw bull's-eye data with a normal data base. An artificial intelligence technique which is presently becoming widely popular and which is particularly suitable for pattern recognition is that of artificial neural network. We have studied the ability of feed forward neural networks to extract patterns from bull's-eye data by assessing their capability t

Three-dimensional high-resolution T1 mapping and perfusion imaging in the normal and ischemic rat brain with hyperpolarized [2-13C]tertiary-butyl alcohol.

PURPOSE: To develop methods for three-dimensional relaxometry and quantitative perfusion imaging using hyperpolarized [2-13C]tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) in the rat brain under normal and ischemic conditions at 9.4 T. TBA is a freely diffusible tracer that readily traverses the blood-brain barrier, resulting in high tissue signal and long residence times. METHODS: A hybrid method consisting of rapid two-dimensional imaging of the arterial input followed by slower three-dimensional variable tip-angle balanced steady state free-precession imaging of the brain is implemented. Image data are anal

Optimized spectrally selective steady-state free precession sequences for cartilage imaging at ultra-high fields.

OBJECT: Fat suppressed 3D steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequences are of special interest in cartilage imaging due to their short repetition time in combination with high signal-to-noise ratio. At low-to-high fields (1.5-3.0 T), spectral spatial (spsp) radio frequency (RF) pulses perform superiorly over conventional saturation of the fat signal (FATSAT pulses). However, ultra-high fields (7.0 T and more) may offer alternative fat suppression techniques as a result of the increased chemical shift. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Application of a single, frequency selective, RF pulse is compared t

Non-invasive cerebral perfusion pressure (nCPP): evaluation of the monitoring methodology in head injured patients.

The method of direct calculation of cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) as the difference between mean arterial pressure and intracranial pressure (ICP) produces a number, which not always adequately expresses brain perfusion. We investigated an alternative non-invasive method, based on waveform analysis of Transcranial Doppler blood flow velocity in Middle Cerebral Arteries (MCA). 25 consecutive head injured patients, paralysed, sedated and ventilated were studied. Intracranial pressure (ICP) arterial blood pressure (ABP) were monitored continuously. The left and right MCAs were insonated daily

Feasibility and performance of an adaptive contrast-oriented FDG PET/CT quantification technique for global disease assessment of malignant pleural mesothelioma and a brief review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) remains very challenging. Assessment of response to treatment is necessary for modifying treatment and using new drugs. Global disease assessment (GDA) by implementing image processing methods to extract more information out of positron emission tomography (PET) images may provide reliable information. In this study we show the feasibility of this method of semi-quantification in patients with mesothelioma, and compare it with the conventional methods. We also present a review of the literature about this topic. METHODS: Nineteen su

An iterative method for coil sensitivity estimation in multi-coil MRI systems.

This paper presents an iterative coil sensitivity estimation method for multi-coil MRI systems. The proposed method works with coil images in the magnitude image domain. It determines a region of support (RoS), a region being composed of the same type of tissues, by a region growing algorithm, which makes use of both intensities and intensity gradients of pixels. By repeating this procedure, it can determine multiple regions of support, which together cover most of the concerned image area. The union of these regions of support provides a rough estimate of the sensitivity of each coil through

Fully automated patellofemoral MRI segmentation using holistically nested networks: Implications for evaluating patellofemoral osteoarthritis, pain, injury, pathology, and adolescent development.

PURPOSE: Our clinical understanding of the relationship between 3D bone morphology and knee osteoarthritis, as well as our ability to investigate potential causative factors of osteoarthritis, has been hampered by the time-intensive nature of manually segmenting bone from MR images. Thus, we aim to develop and validate a fully automated deep learning framework for segmenting the patella and distal femur cortex, in both adults and actively growing adolescents. METHODS: Data from 93 subjects, obtained from on institutional review board-approved protocol, formed the study database. 3D sagittal g

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of a-v fistulas: from MRI and ultrasound scans to numeric evaluation of hemodynamics.

PURPOSE: A-v anastomosis entails dramatic changes in hemodynamic conditions, which may lead to major alterations to the vessels involved; primarily dilatations and devastating stenoses. Wall shear stress is thought to play a key role in the remodeling of the vessels exposed to abnormal levels and oscillating wall shear stress. In this study we sought to develop a framework suitable for thorough in vivo analyses of wall shear stress and vessel morphology of a-v fistulas in patients. METHODS: Using ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) transverse image stacks from six patient a-v fist

High-resolution functional vascular assessment with ultrasound.

In order to improve the resolution of contrast-assisted imaging systems, we have created a high-frequency destruction/contrast replenishment imaging system with a spatial resolution of 160 microm x 160 microm. The system utilizes a 1-MHz cylindrically focused transducer for destruction and a 25-MHz spherically focused transducer for pulse/echo imaging. Speckle tracking and a clutter filter are applied across frames to remove the challenging physiologic motion artifacts that are obtained when imaging with a mechanically scanned transducer. Using a new estimation technique, flow constants propor
