Neonatal mortality in Meerut district.

A study of neonatal mortality in Meerut district revealed an infant mortality rate of 50.1 per 1000 live births. Neonatal mortality accounted for 37.8% of infant mortality with a neonatal mortality rate of 19.0 per 1000 live births. 90.5% of these neonates were delivered at home largely by untrained personnel (57.2%). Only 28.6% of these neonates were treated by qualified doctors and only 30.9% of their mothers were fully immunized against tetanus. At least 2/3rd of neonatal mortality was due to exogenous factors with tetanus neonatorum and septicaemia being the principal causes of mortality e

Health status, trends, and issues in Sri Lanka.

It is widely recognized that better health is a prerequisite for the overall economic and social development of a nation. Sri Lanka, like many other countries experiencing the epidemiological transition, will have to make effective decisions on health-care service management and the development of education and training programs for health-care professionals. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current health service administration, health status, trends and issues, and health financing and resource allocation in Sri Lanka. The review revealed that Sri Lanka has achieved a relatively

Resilience among Pregnant Women in a Low-Income, Immigrant Urban Neighborhood: A Photovoice Study in Elmhurst, Queens.

Resilience is increasingly recognized as a protective factor in maternal health, yet limited research has explored how pregnant women living in low-income, immigrant-dense urban neighborhoods define and express resilience in their everyday environments. This study used photovoice to capture community-rooted strengths among pregnant participants living in Elmhurst, Queens, a multicultural area with a significant immigrant population. Ten English-speaking pregnant participants were recruited from the CHIMES (Community and Household Infant-Maternal Exposures Study), a longitudinal cohort examinin

Affective symptoms in pregnancy are associated with the vaginal microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Composition of the vaginal microbiome in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal, obstetric, and child health outcomes. Therefore, identifying sources of individual differences in the vaginal microbiome is of considerable clinical and public health interest. The current study tested the hypothesis that vaginal microbiome composition during pregnancy is associated with an individual's experience of affective symptoms and stress exposure. METHODS: Data were based on a prospective longitudinal study of a medically healthy community sample of 275 mother-infant pairs. Affective s

Committee Opinion No. 666: Optimizing Postpartum Care.

In the weeks after birth, postpartum care often is fragmented among maternal and pediatric health care providers, and communication between inpatient and outpatient settings is inconsistent. To optimize postpartum care, anticipatory guidance should begin during pregnancy. During antenatal care, it is recommended that the patient and her obstetrician-gynecologist or other obstetric care provider formulate a postpartum care plan and identify the health care professionals who will comprise the postpartum care team for the woman and her infant. Ideally, during the postpartum period, a single healt
